Agreed. Why can't they just remake the original K1, with the polyurethane midsole and air bubble? These look like shit. I'd buy 10 pairs of a proper reissue.
[close]

Original K1 didn’t have the air bubble

99% sure it did. That was the big thing about them, besides being Koston’s shoe. From what I remember, Nike didn’t have the exclusive rights to use air bubbles anymore, and the Koston 1 was the first skate shoe with an air bubble.

Could definitely be wrong though

I skated a pair of Koston 1s in 2002, and I will skate this pair in 2022.

Out of all the sole swaps eS does, these one don’t look half bad.

Not trying to be an eS hater like usual, but what's with those weird ridges on the sole? Those don't seem very functional for skateboarding.

I think the very early version - maybe a sample - didn't have the bubble. But by '97ish, when they started getting really popular, they definitely did have the bubble.

Fuck, this has got me nostalgic for the K1. Favourite shoe ever. How dope were the "cool grey" ones with the clear sole? So good.

Seems like just for looks.

They probably would say it helps when sliding your foot because of less surface area of something like that.

Probably has no actual utility.

I wonder if r&d will ever get better when it comes to technology and general design of skate shoes(core brands). I’m cool with it where it’s at I just don’t want to see half thought through shit anymore.

the problem is we're coming out of ten years of near perfectly designed shoes but people are bored of the plain look so they have to go back to the wacky days. they know that shit doesn't really work so they only half do it and we get a bunch of half thought thru shit.

First three colours of the first season of the Koston 1 in 97 were White/Gum, Black/Gum, and Navy/Gum. Only the Navy had the air bubble, white and black didn't have the air bubble. I know this because I obsessed over that shoe and actually always thought they looked better without the air bubble. (But not when they changed it to the EK-01). Also I had this pair of the first run forever until I sold them years back:

The shape and materials of the reissue look actually really spot on, it's just got that dumb sole on it. Which the navy makes even more confusing if they're gonna keep running that shoe, they should have just made a proper sole for it.

Thanks for setting us straight.

Man, those are a thing of beauty.

I too hated the EK-01, they were really bulky from memory. The Lakai reissue also sucked. It's so disappointing that eS is not doing it properly this time around.

I remember getting the navy/gum ones the day they arrived at Small Empire in NJ and they def had the air bubble.  Did not realize or remember that the white and black ones didn't.  Nice tidbit Watson.

I’m still obsessed over the black upper, white midsole, royal blue sole colorway I had.

I was looking at the eS timeline page they have looking for a picture and came up with a question you are perfectly suited to answer. If the K1 came out in 97 and K2 already in 98, when did they put out all of the colorways, cause there have to be at least a dozen of the original ones, right? Surely they weren’t all released in one year.

Do you have any K1’s left or did you liquidate them all? I think I would have skated a pair, with the hardened soles and all…

The K1 didn't get discontinued with the release of K2 and K3

Yeah I assumed that would have been the case, just wondered how long they were out in total. For some reason I only ever had one pair of K1s and K3s, I guess I got sidetracked with some Genetics or something.

The eS reissues aren't too bad in my opinion. I'll check them out if I see them in person.

10% ipaths 90% bargain shoe warehouse. The suede toe panel is too low your toes gonna poke thru the canvas after 3 kickflips. I like the general idea of it tho, looks good if I squint.

That's just a generic ass "Margon" outsole, popularised by brands like Common Projects or Filling Pieces.
They most likely didn't had enough money to invest in real molds so they just ordered some off-branded cupsoles and called it a day...

Yeah disappointing. If its the one I'm thinking of that sole is heavy AF and has the shallowest tread pattern.

had some margom soled wings+horns shoes a while back and can confirm they are slippery and heavy as fuck, also the sole having a steel shank inside made them extremely stiff and took a long time to break in for regular wear.

cant imagine any of this being desirable in a skate shoe so lol to whoever greenlit that. the shoes themselves were very comfy however and lasted about 5 years.

I don’t think you getting any of that in here mate. You’re most likely getting the cheap knock-off Margon and not the actual Italian one with steel shanks and stuff…

Man, I like those States. I get the whole fashion brand knock-off, etc comments but I have to admit they make me laugh a little. Fast fashion has constantly ripped off high fashion which has constantly ripped off skate culture. It's kind of an incestuous cycle.

My only gripe, I wish they would have gone further with the grasshopper vibes and sized up the toe cap and added a strap. Also, I'd love a tan/navy color like the grasshopper:

Yeah those States looked like what I could get if I thought "I wanna make a run of my own skate shoes, with very low minimums. I'll check out what unbranded stuff they have on DH Gate."

Pretty sure the new State cupsole is on the same sole that they used for the Pacifica Cup -

Someone mentioned a thick/heavy sole with no tread depth, and I believe that was the deal with the Pacifica Cup. I didn't even try them on - just picked them up in my hand at the shop, and I could tell that these were bad shoes. State is cooked. They're welcome to prove me wrong, but they never designed a good shoe, and they'll be out of business before they ever get close.

Did anyone have those proper shoes? Is that brand still going? If they were good maybe it would be cool if they partnered up with state. Combine the names and become prostate
