lakai q3 2023 lookbook is up - new griffin gass shoe is kinda boring but might be a reasonable choice for those of us not wanting to be wearing a giant flare logo on our feet, navy/black atlantics look great as well. meanwhile the new telford hi colorway is absolutely heinous and i hope it doesn't actually make it to market because i'm not sure there's enough clearance shelf space on the planet to hold it

I like the new gass pro model, kinda reminds me of an old Cairo foster lakai shoe, or like a NB 550, I think I’d get it

First thing i thought when i saw the shoe was the Elevate (Spencer Hamilton pro model on supra).

I cant be the only one thinking this: Griffin gets his own pro model, then there's a shoe "designed by Simon" but not a pro model...

To be fair to vans (which looking at that picture really is hard) new balance has also made some novelty shoes over the years. That cupsole halfcab really would of been nice tho

probably because there is already a shoe from lakai called the griffin.

Or they learned (with Tony’s model?) that it’s not worth the headache to name a pro model after the skater and have to change names after production/contracts were agreed to if the skater leaves or is kicked off.

Or griffin didn’t want it called the Gass. Or marketing team said nah?

Wasn’t Tony’s shoe always called the Prototype or something like that?    If you’re marketable enough to get a pro model, you should be marketable enough to use your name on it - but it’s arguable whether he is that marketable (or really anyone on Lakai).  I like the guy, but he’s stuck in that crail bubble

DC used to stop calling shoes after the rider after the 3rd one or so - it’s just weird that there’s the Riley 3, Flaco 2, and then the Atlantic, then the Trudger.    There just doesn’t seem to be a uniformity or naming convention going on

If anything it seems they've learned their lesson on not naming new shoes after the pro who's endorsing it. As when or if they leave, lakai can continue selling the shoe without any conflict. That happened with alot of Fallen shoes too before they stopped being made.

Right - but Riley 3 is still named after him and he’s the only rider I’d be remotely worried about leaving bc of his last name and he has life/sponsors outside of Crailtap.

I’m not saying I disagree with you, I’m just point out their fuck up

They used to be my favorite shoe brand in the early 2010s but now all they make are narrow ass vulcs with insane heel slip, and their cupsoles are floppy af after 1 sesssion. I really dont know what happened to this company.

i skated the evo 2.0 which had a good sole, then the atlantics - not as solid but didn't get too flimsy . but then i skated the manchester xlk and they got floppy  after a few sessions.

Oh no doubt. I feel like Riley is to Lakai as Spanky is to Emerica. They're too integrated with their shoe brands and honestly I couldn't see either of them fitting in anywhere else.

Lakai will keep Riley just incase tony is ever of vans he might wear lakai again. Could see Riley wearing emerica, vans or cons altho maybe not fully on depending on how things go. Spanky on nb or cons providing they can supply fastbreaks or another cupsole regularly

The Gass shoe looks kinda like they took cues from The Staple, which was a Reebok knock off (that I loved), and found a few other small Rod Laver era design cues to add on. It's pretty non offensive coming from a company that has a legit Dunk ripoff silhouette that they cannot avoid butchering.
