While a lot of the recent reissues hop on a late 90s early 00s puffy/baggy trend, what they also capture is an era when skate shoes were unmistakably, uniquely made for the skateboarding world and not easily integrated into gym outfits, dinner dates, or the office. I think where a lot of the frustration comes from is this apparent situation where skate shoe companies seem to be unequipped to make something skateboarding had for itself 15-25 years ago and didn't compromise to the appeal of the general population. Just saying, these bitter criticisms of any minor shortcoming of a reissue (like no midsole) is probably more of a reaction to a pattern of defeat - a general sense of grief and frustration about the state of skate-centric skate shoes, than about that particular shoe or technical feature.
I can't speak for anyone else, but a midsole is a particular technical feature that makes or breaks shoes for me. Practically any cupsole with a full length midsole, I will try on at a minimum and will likely buy if it fits me. If it has that egg crate bullshit instead of a midsole, I am not interested whatsoever. Maybe it isn't fair to judge a whole brand on one shoe, but the MJ reissue - a fundamentally flawed shoe that seems to now be collecting dust on the clearance rack of practically every shop that ordered it, and was apparently so bad that shops are mad about it - does not suggest positive things about the current direction of Emerica.
I feel inclined to agree to this any time I see someone make this point about egg crate midsoles. I refuse to buy cupsoles that don't have an actual midsole, you're no longer buying a function driven shoe when they are constructed that way. You're buying something made as cheaply as possible to cash in.
I don’t even own a shop and I’m mad about it. $95 dollars for a shoe I won’t/shouldn’t skate in because of egg crate midsole that has no shock absorption at all. One of the panels is sewed on sloppily so it rides higher on my ankle, which hurts.
I may just leave them at the skatepark for some young kid with freakishly large size 12 feet who is just learning how to Ollie can have them.
On the positive side, because I don’t want to harp on how dogshit they are, is that I made a nice $95 donation to a skate shop (minus whatever the shop paid to buy the shoes). I’ll feel good about that.
What I don’t understand is Etnies has always delivered solid quality shoes in the six pair of Joslins I’ve purchased, yet Emerica puts out trash like the OG-1 with egg crate midsoles and sloppy stitching/paneling.
