your old droog. I believe him to be the next chosen one.
[close]

Post examples.

I know he's pals with Edan who is one of my favorite rappers but I've listed to some of the Your Old Droog stuff and it didn't really hook me... I'd love to hear some more examples of why he's great too.

And on that note... how do people find new music these days? In the old days I would visit ughh or even take a walk down to fat beats during my lunch break and talk to the sales people, but these days I have no idea how to find anything that isn't Megan Thee Stallion or other music about buttfucking or whatever her music is about. Don't get me wrong, I love a good raunchy sex rap, but it needs to be clever, like when Biggie was writing for Lil' Kim or even someone like Akinyele can be entertaining, but I can't listen to it all the time.

A majority of the stuff posted in this thread is some old gems, not much new.

And there is new stuff coming out... I think Wiki's music is generally great, Boogie has some good music, Kedrick Lamar obviously, but he's basically "classic" now, etc.

Yo I even slept on Griselda for the last year of them being brought up on here but I just got into them like 3 months ago.

While it is true they dont make a song that isn't about prison, drug sales, or death: the beats within the last 4 or so years are on par with WU. If you fuck with Ghost, Rae, WU, or that BOOMbap in general check em out.

Also peep that channel on YouTube, he has been doing alternate intros using the sample for some of the most fire songs.

EDIT: we are ALL still waiting on those old Droog examples

i don't really think droog's that exciting of a rapper or the "next chosen one" or whatever, but he's a pretty clever writer and that alone can provide enough listening enjoyment, for me anyway
here's some tracks where he holds his own among rappers i find purely GREAT (MF DOOM and mach-hommy)

Yeah I've been seeing that hyped too. Must give it a proper listen. The (uncensored) album art is sick too.

I've always repped Uk music heavily. Been playing Melanin 9's Magna Carta album a lot recently

as far as UK rap goes, this guy is sick. Not modern drill, older ish

NYC stuff, this Benny The Butcher song ft. 38 spesh and Jadakiss is off of the 1st  Plugs I Met tape.
"got a stick and a lamb like I came out the bible" - 38 spesh SHEESH

also for my underground rapper out of left field, check out Kirblagoop. His voice is grating and high pitched at first but just go with it, he grows on you. His beat selection is always great and puts out a ton of work.

Also shoutout to whoever posted 8ball and MJG, their influence is severely understated when it comes to southern gangster rap. People bring up 3 6 a lot but 8 ball and MJG combined with UGK in early 90s laid the blueprint for southern (esp houston) rap style going up through 2000.

Just saw that plugs I met 2 link.
First off I think Harry Fraud is a genius producer.
I do think the first plugs I met had a bit more energy and as much as I hate to say it, I like the Griselda boys on grimey looped piano beats more. Harry Fraud's grandiose samples give me a more Curren$y, Action Bronson vibe. It still is good but, its like original coke (pun alert) don't mess w the recipe

Solid links on whole page. Loving the Pig Pun song.

Been meaning to check out Your Olde Droog.

also on my short list of people I need to check out if anyone has any recommendations
Boldy James
Roc Marciano
KA

also my shuffle was on this morning and played this Jurassic 5 song, forgot how fun they were

Ka's album with Preservation, Days with Yen Lo, is my favourite that I've heard from him I think @lemonchicken91 . Almost no percussion on the whole album. All the samples are from the 1965 Manchurian Candidate, I think.

i agree with that evaluation of "plugs i met II", that production with benny felt off to me, along with "burden of proof", which i didn't even listen to all of. i was also first exposed to harry fraud via max b and french montana, and that production was so suited for them, nothing will ever top it. i know benny has mainstream ambitions but he sounds better on dour and gloomy stuff. "tana talk 3" is perfection to me.

there's so much good music between roc, boldy, and ka that you could start just about anywhere with them. roc kind of pioneered that minimal production with just the loop and no added percussion movement with the album "marcberg", so that'd be my recommended jump off point.

i don't know if there's been any discussion of sage/navy blue in this thread but he's rooted in that minimal lo-fi rap vein and has a song with ka

i genuinely like his music but i'm not sure how much of that is coming from my bewilderment that something this introspective and mature is made by a pro skater in his early 20s

I haven’t been very excited about any rap music since I was in high school and started listening to Mac Dre (sometime around ‘06-‘07). I never completely stopped listening to rap but I always had the subconscious assumption that nothing new coming out was going to convince me to be a “fan”.

Benny the Butcher pretty much changed that. I think the first song that opened my eyes to his energy was “Quarantine” a little single he did in 2020. Anyways, I started going back and listening to stuff. It turned me on to 38 Spesh, Conway, Westside Gunn, etc.
It’s been exciting for me to dive back in to the rap realm. I was listening to Mark Kozelek and The Radio Dept. a little too much.

That being said, Plugs I Met 2 was definitely a bit underwhelming, the best few songs were probably the more melancholic ones. The Fat Joe feature was terrible, I didn’t really like French Montana’s either, but I can’t really judge anyone by their features. I listened to the whole album a couple times but it definitely doesn’t feel right. Same with Burden of Proof. For what they are they are okay, both had a lot of hype surrounding them, and in my opinion if they didn’t, I might have been more excited when I heard the actual finished product.

My verdict? I’m gonna keep listening and keep being excited. I hope the next project is a little more close to Tana Talk 3 or A Friend of Ours.

This song is fantastic

I had no idea this trash ass movie was out & Benny was a generous 5'0". They have him standing on boxes to talk to the other cast

Watch this movie only if you enjoyed The Room with Tommy Wiseau

I'm sad to say I made it through that entire movie. There weren't really any redeeming qualities, they used a lot of flashbacks too, as if the audience wasn't going to be able to piece together the simple ass plot.
