i'd say it has been and still is, but that the tide is changing a bit. skateboarding generally mocks that which is overtly macho, but also that which is not macho enough- skating "like a girl" or being a "fag" are pretty common disses. i don't know why either. skating is generally pretty tolerant and accepting when it comes to so many other things- race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc- but sexual preference and gender equality, not so much. ms steamer did a lot for female skaters, and maybe the same will happen for homosexual skaters when the day comes that a pro of note comes out or arrives, who knows. i think it will be a good thing for skateboarding. but as for why it exists in the first place, i don't know.
