Good luck, millions of sites and millions of site users could result in consumers being turned away from your product if they believe that they are being unfairly monitored.

just temporary fixes to a permanent shift in how people access media. obviously the entire entertainment industry is losing billions of dollars and this will probably put at least some money back into their pockets for a bit but the internet is not going anywhere and eventually everyones just gonna need to find a new way to make a buck.

...and why should we care?  Last time I checked VPNs and anonymous torrenting services still exist. It's not even like they can actively monitor every single internet user in the country either. They would like us to think that they can but anyone with half a brain knows it's not even feasible to do that. Yes, some people will get caught and slapped on the wrist but this is mostly just for show. They're trying to scare people out of piracy.

So if I go to Starbucks or better yet the college I attend and start downloading all kinds of copyrighted files will their internet be shut off?

At my college everyone has a unique login name and password. It's easy to track people. They crack down on the people who share a lot on DC++ like every year to try to scare everyone else away from using it.

On public wifi yes, because it's all consolidated as one ip address thorough one paying customer. You could theoretically go to say a McDonald's with wifi and then download a bunch of shit illegally and then their "speeds would get slowed down". But it's like what was said above, to watch and monitor each and every internet user is damn near impossible and not feasible. As well a lot of it such as private email and online banking can be considered an infringement on the United States Citizen's Right to Privacy.

so, does this only pick up if somebody is downloading torrents? I don't see how they could figure out if a mediafire link someone is downloading is or isn't copyrighted material, because if they knew it would be taken down already. Can someone explain this to me in a more dumbed down form?

to think that everything is just going to shut down and there's going to be no sites that will host downloadable content is ridiculous. there's just too many people constantly downloading and uploading files to enforce this to an effective degree. that's pretty much all there is to it.

I got a letter from comcast about 3 months ago when I torrented "Another Earth", seems like the producers were tracking it specifically and told them or something. No clue how it worked really. It's definitely intended to scare people and to be honest it kind of worked.

My friend told me he received a similar letter one time about a year ago, I just thought he was lying.

I think the copyright holder (or, as of July, perhaps just the ISP) would need to know said link had copyrighted material. While whoever said they can't monitor every download is absolutely correct, with the current state of Deep Packet Inspection http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_packet_inspection they can figure out what they want to know with relative ease, assuming they point it at you. DPI is a big deal, i think it's the most effective way to block Tor transmission as well (the protocol that lets you see the deep web, and also lets rebels in censoring nations get news to/from the outside world).
But I'm not really a computer guy so all this is a bit over my head.

I think an important question is, what is the incentive for the ISP's to do all this? It appears to be voluntary, but all the big ones have agreed to it. Do they get kickbacks from the RIAA and friends?
She takes it in the butt a lot now though so I suppose everything worked out.

yep. Its really funny how when automation came in and cost millions of people their jobs there was no attempt to slow that down, but now that its cutting into the profits of the top, there are constantly laws stopping what is essentially the next step in technology. You used to need 20 men to make a car, now it takes one guy operating a machine, you used to need to own fancy recording and album making equipment to distribute music, now you just need a PC. It won't change even with a million laws.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”

Except that this has nothing to to with music recording technology at all.

Really anyone who still uses the pirate bay or torrents in general is asking for it.
filestube is where it's at really.
