Steve Olson - Crazy Monk
« on: September 25, 2012, 01:09:02 AM »
"I never really became rich and I never became a businessman so I was left in a position of being pissed off at the skate industry because the industry wasn't really giving me the respect that I felt I had earned. After over 10 years of putting in all this work and helping skateboarding to evolve to the next level everyone knows that everyone that was part of that generation put in their help of the building blocks of skateborading. Evolving this martial art becoming doper and doper. So yeah one day I just called up all my sponsors and I just quit all my sponsors..."

He was always pushing things.

Wonder how he ended up so broke? The shoe design goes some way to explaining it...

RAD skater though. I always liked his Life in the Fast Lane part.

Yeah, unfortunately. Very sub-par Wu conspiracy rambling. He seems like a cool enough dude. Should've stayed skating.

I don't care who you are, skateboarding does not owe you anything.  I don't understand how people cannot see this.

Agreed. I think it's also funny how this hippy-dippy types usually have the biggest egos. Many of them talk this "we're all one, maannn" but they feel like they are more tuned in and deserving than others. Maybe that's just been my personal experience with the type, but it seems to be a pattern in all of them.

huh? If anything he seemed to get that and knew it was time to get out. I didn't check up on his music, but me personally I only care what he had to say about skating.
Cool to see this guy do an interview though. For those who don't remeber, shorty's was like the hottest shit out at one point.

I have heard from a few people at the time the shorty's pro's were making $10,000 royalty checks a month. I don't think any of them paid any taxes either, so that would explain it.

Monk!

It's nice to know whats going on with Mr.Olson after such a long hiatus, its a shame that he isn't skating anymore.

It's really sad when you put in perspective all of the drug addicted pieces of shit who have gotten numerous chances to succeed in the skate game, while Mr.Olson was pushed to the side and forgotten about.

It's too bad that he decided to move on, because I think he could have found a home somewhere if he was still ambitious enough to search.

There are plenty of skaters who have lesser career achievements/complete freeloaders that are somehow staying afloat (I.E. GINO,CASTILLO) and I feel he could have done the same.

Olson on Organika would make complete sense.

Oh, well.

Or at least do an Epicly Later'd. Would be rad to hear some stories. I feel like they are as iconic as Menace was at the time where they had a brand that was super popular and then out of no where, it died out.

You're not alone. Hippies are great thinkers and have decent ideas but are fucking super lazy. I hate hearing people like that have an opinion when they have nothing to show for it.

he clearly said he wasn't being respected... maybe he didn't want to go into detail or name names... i think he implicitly stated there was something that instigated him leaving.

he is definitely naive and somewhat ignorant regarding his world view... but its a major judgement to claim him has egotistical from this text alone.

I agree. I'd also like to hear someone else from Shorty's talk about Steve Olson. He got chewed up and spit out, but he called up and quit all his sponsors?

Sad he went the unreliable dirty white backpacker rap route...but the dude is still my hero! From the interview it seems to me he was one of those guys that didn't see the line that separates skate community and skate industry then got jaded of it all.

Exactly. Just be grateful you were blessed with the skill to be able to mix it with the best in the world for such a long time.

Lenoce summed it up perfectly with this
Not complaining because I am happy to get anything out of skating and I would be doing it regardless.
