So what’s the difference and function of radials compared to classic fulls now since they are on the market radials lock in a little better I guess?
Radials have smaller radius edges and more riding surface. They should lock in a bit better.
Classic Fulls actually have slightly more riding surface currently but Radials might have in the past. DLX only started putting wheel specs in the past couple years, so I’m not sure if or when they changed. Everything else said is on point.
56mm Radial: 35mm width / 21.5mm riding surface
56mm Classic Full: 37 mm width / 23mm riding surface
Thanks for the correction. I couldn’t find the comparison on the current shapes diagrams on their website so I found an older one. Either way, the question about lock in pertains to the edge and side more than the riding surface. They are very similar for the most part but personally, I’d pick what’s more important to me and go with Classics or Conicals over Radials since Radials seem more of an in between.
So the funniest thing with some of the wheel dimensions is that they do change considerably going up in size, so comparing something in 52, it could be different to 54, which could also be quite different to 56 mm sizes.
Example 1: The Classic Full shapes are very close to Classics up to 54 mm, then they go much wider in 56 an 58.
Example 2: Radials go up fairly comparably to 56, then get much wider in 58.
If you were to check and measure 54 mm size wheels in all options, the Bighead is actually the widest, with Radials wider than all the Classic or rounded variants in the riding surface, with only Conical Full shapes being wider there. That is not taking into account all the other shape options, just the ones mentioned above, with Conical Full and Bighead shapes added in to compare.
For all relevant wheels in a 54 mm size, here are the comparable dimensions (info from previous charts):
Classic 54 x 33.6 with 16.4 riding surface
Classic Full 54 x 34 with 19 riding surface
Radial 54 x 34 with 20.5 riding surface
Conical Full 54 x 34 with 22 riding surface
Bighead 54 x 34.6 with 17.4 riding surface
