When are you considered an adult?

Some people in Africa make you go to the woods by yourself for awhile and then they cut off some of your dick skin when it's time to be a man, but we don't have such definitive rituals in the West.  How do you know you're a man?  I mean sometimes it's obvious.  You look at some dude and he's got a beer belly, a kid strapped to his chest, and knows the names of all the tools in a toolbox.   But is there some kind of seminal moment?  For instance:

When you get a chick pregnant?  No...that would exclude GAY...maybe there's some alternative for him.
When you pay taxes?
When you make a wall of fame on some restaurant eating challenge?

I just read some article in the newspaper last week about this. they said age 43 is when you finally stop laughing at dirty words and penis jokes and stuff. I wish I grew up thinking I had untill 43 to grow up, instead of feeling dumb for not feeling like an adult at 18 or 21 like how I was raised.

just last week my friend made a comment about feeling like an adult, and i laughed and he wasn't joking. the whole group of people my age looked at me weird when I said I feel the same as when I was 14 or whatever. tho I haven't done shit really, like gipper said. i agree with his statement

Relative to US culture, I would generally go with when you are living on your own and paying your own way. �

In my personal experience though the first time that I held my baby daughter in my arms and looked in her eyes and saw her looking back at me, that was the most absolute feeling of having arrived at manhood that I have ever felt in my life. �

My dad still laughs at farts and dick jokes so I am confident that I am a down for life on that one, it's been genetically gifted to me.
