In most cases 9 other nerds and yourself have a draft from the pool of players (offensive) in the nfl. Some go through a snake draft (1-10 then 10-1 back to 1-10 etc etc) while others do an auction and bid on players with x amount of dollars, everyone has the same amount. After the draft is done teams go head to head to see which team is better. Points are produced by the stats the players produce in real life games. This last for, usually, 13 weeks until the top 4 teams go to the playoffs until a champion is crowned.

That trade was dumb because you could have easily found a replacement level tight end off waivers, in most cases you would have lost the week but you also made some other suspect roster decisions so who knows.
