So just start a thread either titled something like "ask Rothmeyer" same ask Karl's and we can bounce off there. First question though, what were you feelings over the Rocco vs Swank ad wars that included your head being added into a gay porn photo and what else may we not know about that era?

This thread is started because I replied to the "Jewish Pros" thread. A couple guys on there wanted to get all 90's and ask some questions so I offered the same deal as Sinclair did (hence the homage to Sinclair in the title).
I was trying my best not to come off like "check me out" since about 99% of the people out there don't know or care who I was. But there's a few 90's afficianado's out there who want to get skate nerdy so I'm down.

So the first question was above...about the Foundation/Santa Cruz ad wars in 1992/1993.

But here's the quick version. My first Foundation Ad came out with them using the FUCK 'EM logo in Santa Cruz dot font, actually a logo that Santa Cruz had used in the past so we thought it would be funny to use in my first ad. They didn't take it too lightly at NHS so they fired back by cut and pasting my head and Tod's head on some sketchy ass gay porn photo. It's funny to look back and see pre-photoshop just how bad everything looks in general. When that issue of Big Brother came out my friends thought I was going to lose it. I was pretty bummed at first, but then you have to get over it right away or you'll look like an idiot. I remember skating that contest in New Jersey right around this time (it was in 411 #1, Duffy won) and all the Santa Cruz guys were there. Kendall thought I was going to freak out on him, but I'm not really the freak out kind of person, and it was over right when we saw eachother. Not 6 months later I was riding for Direction Wheels out of NHS and then back on Santa Cruz right after that.

Right after that ad Foundation did one back at them. They used some old team letterhead I had at home and made it sound like SCS was getting out of the skateboard business and just sticking to mountain bikes (which they had just started) and rollerblades (which of course they never made).

Probably the thing you guys don't know (another thing I referenced in the Chromeball write up) was that just after those ads Rocco stole Richard Mulder from Foundation for World. Since he owned Big Brother, he already had an ad made up for Richard but also Tod had turned in a Foundation ad of Richard at the same time. Rocco, being the genius that he is, told Richard not to quit until the magazine had already gone to print with both ads in it. Then, when it was too late for Tod to pull his ad out (pre-paid mind you), Richard called and quit. I was there at the warehouse grabbing boards and Tod wasn't super happy about it if you can imagine.

I'm glad you recognize I can't go and spill all that out on a public forum. The easiest way to describe it though is this- 2 guys are bosses, 1 guy owns the business (Brian)...so when both the bosses don't see eye to eye, the owner is going to have the last say in the matter.
We're all just the children of the divorce in this now. So that really doesn't answer the question, but it's the best I can do. Irreconcilable differences?

i liked your part on cocktails and was disappointed when i saw you yrs later skating w/ vallely. not in your older guy skating, just that you did it w/ vallely. i noticed though, you'd put on some pounds and gotten glasses, kinda resembling 'black ninja'. is it possible on a 90s tour through vegas black ninja came out of your penis and into a pro ho's swee swoo? and i don't know if this is a legit question but could you describe beagle, berra, olson and frank hirata and your interactions. was beagle a drunk, did you see berra weep, is olson a genius etc.

I actually never went on tour with Berra. I got kicked off Foundation to make room for him.
Beagle, Creager and Mulder were the reasons I got on Foundation in the first place. Those dudes ruled and Josh was pretty happy-go-lucky back then. We were all in our late teens/early 20's so there weren't a lot of cares to be had. I think all the hijinx came when Heath and those guys would get together.
I barely knew Olson, he was living in Seattle while I was on the team. I had already known Hirata from when he was on SMA so we were friends already. He was super normal in the early 90's.

Lib lives in Buffalo or Rochester now. ? He's pretty MIA. ? I tried to get him to come down to the Maloof NYC contest we did there a few years back but no dice.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. You still got all those Star Wars toys? Since you were a Star Wars geek did you get the Plan B Star Wars board series as well back in the day?

I fully blew it and DIDN'T get any of those Plan B boards. I have no idea why. I could have traded in loads of free boards for those. We were all idiots in retrospect. It would cost a small fortune to get that whole series now.

Mark Nisbet still has all of the 508 vids for sure. He's got a website and someday he'll put them all out on here.

Other than the dudes still in skating like Montoya, Rob G and those guys, I still see Ron Ressurrection on occasion, Tuan Nguyen, Dan Highfill. They did a Cherry Park video that Tuan made and everyone pretty much showed up to the Red Room to watch the "premiere".

Since everyone on here (including me) is such fans of Ocean Howell...I'm not sure if you guys knew I posted these on Youtube, but here's some gems from the early 90's. I've got a TON of contests like these on tape that I haven't yet put to digital yet. Someday...

This 2nd video is a CASL contest. We all started entering freestyle contests at one point just because we skated so much flatground back then. So they changed the name to "Flatland" for about 2 events. 2 minute runs on flatground...insane. I'm pretty sure the freestylers were super bummed on us for it as well.

Chalmers! I haven't been to any so far...yet. I went to 2 of the Sharks vs Kings games last year in the playoffs though. It was awesome.

This is an excellent question...Ramona is probably my favorite all time spot of all of the places we used to skate. Creager I think ruled it probably the hardest. I took him there during the Foundation days and then he just owned that place. I really like that Evan Schiefelbine went back and did a line there in his What If? part too, that was so epic.
Best thing I saw go down? This is going to sound funny, but an OG 508 crew guy was Jeff Nichols. He was one of the first dudes on Maple, I saw him do a front halfcab late 360 shove (not just late shove, but full 360 after the halfcab) off the stage. I can't do late shoves for shit so that sticks out and blew my mind back then.

Creager is probably my pick for best dude ever to not totally come up. He's just so good and has been for so long, but had such bad timing on shoe sponsors and things just not go his way in my opinion.
Depends on your definition of "new generation". Because MJ is on my top 5 list of all time, but he's damn near my generation.
If Busenitz counts as new, I'm backing him the hardest of guys who came up in the past 10 years. He can do no wrong in my eyes, total package of ripping. I wish I could see more of Westgate in person, but it's few and far between. I'm a full Luan fan as well as Shane O'Neill.

Well, I've heard 2 things. One was that they thought it was "too serious", which was funny because me and Mike's was a joke (although I I was hyped that I beat him...). The other thing I heard was that the next round was going to have 2 dudes who didn't get along with eachother playing against one another, so they couldn't do it. Skate Nerd beef...ha. I'll have to ask Blair Alley and get the full scoop. I wanted to be the overall nerd champ, but I'm pretty sure Lance would have dusted everyone off anyways. Hard to compete with his game. Honestly though, it was probably a lot of work simply for not much back. I enjoyed it but really, how many of us are out there? It's a pretty old demographic to be sure. Some 20 year old kid could give a fuck about who was on Sonic Skateboards back in 1993.

hahah, i rewatched the draw for the 2nd round and i have a feeling if it was two people who didn't like each other from the reaction it was Jamie Thomas and Lee Dupont. I know Lee used to be a filmer for Zero, i don't know if they had a falling out though.
