I love the idea and existence of quality, American- and skater-made boards, but the solitary Pennswood that I've actually skated (a Scumco) I honestly personally didn't care for. It was definitely quality and without worksmanship issues, but I ultimately didn't care for the shape (steep, really wide/round nose with what seemed like a slightly oversized wheelbase, both of which many other people love), but more importantly, I didn't care for the feel of the wood. It was crisp, but it almost had kind of a brittle or maybe even tinny feel to the pop. I don't mean that the wood itself was truly more brittle or liable to snap, I'm just talking about the feel. Shit, maybe that's just what a slightly better board feels like, but in either case I prefer a tiny bit of give...the snap on a PS Stix almost feels like it has better resonance. It's also what I'm accustomed to.
Wrapping it up, fuck myself for getting this detailed into my relationship with the physical sensations of specific hardgoods in a public setting.
I don't care for PS Stix made boards. I respect Paul Schmitt for decades of contributions to skateboarding but I don't like his boards at all. All of his molds and concave are way too steep with some really strange dimensions and all notoriously small tails. Of the PS made boards I have skated: Roger, Habitat, Alien, Scum Skates (not to be confused with Scumco) and one other that is currently escaping my brain.
The entire Habitat Stained Glass series was completely ruined. Every last one of the dimensions was really odd and not a single one of them was skateable, IMO. Trust me, I tried almost all of them. The Janoski is 8.25 x 31.5. Who makes a 31.5 length with 8.25 width? Talk about trying to ride something that feels short and fat. And that's with a 6.25 tail. Really? The Angel board was listed at 8.125 x 31.5 but in reality was closer to 8x31 with barely a 6 inch tail. I don't know how PS arrives at his sizing, but it's just weird.
EDIT: I don't think PS Stix does all the boards for AWS/Habitat. They only do some.
