It's sad, but true, and it will ultimately lead to the spot getting re-knobbed. Seriously though, credit to everyone involved in this, both city officials and skateboarders alike. It's nice to see that we're presenting ourselves in a more mature manner than we have in the past.

It's been going for a couple months now and everything seems to be fine.  I can see the homeless population becoming a problem though.  They're definitely bummed to have to be sharing the space again.

how can you make such a lengthy interview out of nothing. Basically what happened is that Nike payed of the city council so they could make a legendary spot into a skatepark. It's gonna take couple months max. before someone ends up doing something stupid and the council has their excuse to shut it down again. But NikeSb still has the positive publicity they paid for.

I guess it's great you can skate there now, but there isn't really a shortage of skateparks and perfect ledges in SoCal.

Also I don't get the whole fighting against the stoner park soundwall crap. wouldn't it be better if the people living there didn't complain so much and the park could be skated for longer??

Had me up until scan-able bar codes at Pier 7, scavenger hunts and an app. Please don't even bother rehabbing it if you are going to kook it out.

The city made it clear that in no way would the existence of a wall extend the skatepark's hours past their 10-7(summer) and 10-5(winter) opening/closing times.  All a wall would do is amplify the sound anyways, like a megaphone.

On top of that, enough sketchy shit/people occurs/come to the park that I wouldn't want to be enclosed in a giant rectangle with it, be it the homeless people, the shitty little kids that emigrate from all over the city or the Sawtelles who find it necessary to tag every surface, even the toilet seats in the shitter.

did you read the article? that's not at all what happened. Nike payed to make the spot skateable for one day only. Then thanks to the hard work of Alec Beck, he was able to convince all parties to make it into a "skatepark" as you call it.

The soundwall at Stoner would suck. I like that it feels open and breezy. Not like skating in a walled off jail cell.
i have nothing to fear but jesse himself.

How is this anything but a good thing??!
I'm going to argue that Placebo owes their entire career to a Canadian dude's skate video part. Appleyard should be getting royalties for this shit.

I speak from experience when I say that city types and rich people and other people in power occasionally get inspired by skateboarders doing their thing, like that city council guy sparking the construction of Stoner Plaza. Keep on keeping on and you might luck out.

Inspiring story. Big ups to these guys for putting it together.

one of my favorite l.a. spots ever. it's incredible that it's back and the story behind it is even more amazing. i hope no shitheads go and fuck it up, but i wouldn't be surprised if that did happen. i hope spot liberation becomes an epidemic.

How can anyone shit talk this? Nike money or not, a nobbed spot was made skateable again.

It's dudes like this that make skateboarding better for you ungreatful fucks. Skateboarding isn't an all you can eat buffet. If you don't bring something to the table, don't sit down and eat. Who cares if there are spots all over in socal? Fight for more. You can never have too many options. Respect to everyone that made that happen.

They did a little more than that.

They turned out to be Jason Cohn, who is the Action Sports Brand Director for Nike West, and Travis Trick who is the Marketing Specialist for Action Sports at Nike. They said, ?It?s funny, we were just talking about the same thing but it?s scheduled to be closed and re-knobbed tomorrow evening.? I told them that the City Council would be willing to look into it if they were willing to donate $50,000 over the next five years. They looked at each other and just said, ?Done.?

yeah. i wasn't trying to downplay Nike's involvement. I think everyone deserves props on this. I was just responding to ben shraider's comment that all that happened was that Nike payed off the city council. when the point of the article was to highlight the other people's contributions like alec and snyder. peace and love and all that...

And just like he said in the interview, the precedence has been set.

Yeah there are plenty of other ledges in California but the courthouse being a legal skate spot with durable ledges is pretty rad. Some spots are more than just the skatable stuff and there was a reason we used to drive there in the 90's instead of skating less torn up ledges in the valley.

Fuck a wall at a place like stoner park . Aside from air-flow and gang tag drama right inside, you could guarantee more robbery, assault, drug deals, bum naps, etc. I think people summed that up well enough. It's not the suburbs.

You're absolutely right about Nike putting up marketing $ for good press. Sounds like what they did though is give the minimum needed to get the ball rolling on the spot, then left it in the hands of skaters. I always question their motives but fuck it, that was a decent move. If some pricks fuck it up then that's not on them. I hate to say it but Nike deserves some recognition for their part in at least making the whole thing possible; it's in our hands now.
