I was disappointed that the article didn't touch on homophobia at all despite the term being included in the introduction. While racism and sexism are definitely more common in skateboarding than they should be, homophobia is on a whole other level: it is the norm. Pro skaters aren't able to come out of the closet, because that would negatively affect their boardsales. Meanwhile, even the (conservative) mainstream of society is more open to homosexuality.
Is skateboarding a progressive subculture or an outlet for immature teenagers acting all "edgy" and "politically incorrect"? Fuck, clearly the latter and it has made up its mind long ago, too. There's a few exceptions (e.g., Templeton and Stranger making political statements), but the vast majority of the skateboard community is described best by the term "edgy jocks."
