Just to be clear: the OJ Elite and Original formulas are two different formulas, with Elite being the newer and arguably more high-quality one.
The Elite wheels are ok. They feel somewhat harder than e.g. F4s (when comparing 99 duro wheels), and their slide performance isn't as nice. They do slide, but they're somewhat grippier and harder to break into slides, I'd say. They do bark nice and loud, if that means something. What's more, they feel fast. If my old ass feet could handle "real" hard wheels (I seem to be in the modern 97 and below territory for good) these days, I might prefer OJ Elites over F4s especially in concrete parks.
I've no experience with the Original formula.
The funny thing is the old ones, the Made in USA ones were the "Original Elite" wheels (which was maybe more so just the name than the urethane type), as per what is on the packaging of a good number that I still have, from the 60 mm OJ Elite Combo II, through the Teamriders and others in some smaller sizes.
I guess at some point the formula did change, maybe when they took it to China, as it is no longer milky whilte, but a way more plasticy white and has been for a while, I had noticed on a number of sets that came in as trades, still new in shrink, which I never got out to try.
I do also think I recall Nick Bosserio saying he liked the original formula more than the newer ones that OJs make, so his wheels were out on that urethane, same as the other older big wide wheels, like the original wheels they brought out, often in softer duros or something like that.
They were mostly the 60 mm 95 duro, or 61 mm 97 duro options that I sold a good number of to people who wanted to set up the shaped or more period correct setups from the old era, but they did start to bring out the same shapes in 99 duro options too, including his first wheel, which I also have a set of - came in as a used trade in - which still rolls great, compared to the newer formulas which tend to flatspot way more easily.
Original formula have more grip and tend to flatspot less, while still have a good smooth ride over most surfaces, whereas the new Elite formula tend to be more chirpy and slick and some people have slipped out a lot more on them, where I work.
Anyway, I can see there are quite different sets of wheels now, going by the OJs site.
Not a worry either way.
