*  They look closest to some wheels in the 1994 catalog

You are looking at some 1992 - 1993 (and even 1994 through 1995 from the catalog pics below) specials right there.

Funny how Spitfire have often done XX.5 mm wheels over the years, like they just wanted to do a specific size or had to add the .5 in there just for fun.

For collectors, they might be worth a bit, but for anyone else, they are probably going to feel terrible to actually skate, unless you really want to build up your pushing leg / pumping muscles.

If they were on period correct trucks or even a complete, that would be one worth seeing too.

Things were weird around that time, in the middle of the BPSW era - Big Pants Small Wheels - if you didn't get the reference.

For anyone who is keen to have a good look at some history in the wheel department, this is amazing.

Well worth having a look at the catalog pics.

Thanks that was a good read, yeah the set seems to be from the mid 90s but unfortunately the seller has only one truck, so I'm probably not gonna buy it.

Didn't spitfire launch the f4s with 55.5mm wheels?

i thought they came out first with the 52 mm Classic shape, then made 54 and 56 mm Classics, along with a shape they called "Full" which was more a Conical Full type of thing, but I don't recall any .5 sizes in their first range.

They did do 54.5 mm Formula Four Classic Full wheels for Cardiel, which I have a set of still - such a good shape, but I have lots of others so these will most likely stay in shrink.  The first set of them I had did get skated though.

The 1996 and 1997 catalogs had all the bigger sizes with 60.5 being a common one that I saw earlier too.

Link here:

https://radpursuits.com/90s-skateboard-wheels/

This one is even more interesting from a much broader view of wheels in that era, from 45 mm to 65 mm wheels on the last page from that spread.

Worth a look there too.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Anyone have any history on the Formula One Faze 4 One-Bearing Wheel in the 1993 catalog?

Very funny looking at those old catalog pages. Some people I knew continued to ride sub-50mm wheels up through '96 or so.

The really small wheels also tended to be narrower than a regular wheel which meant truck axles got jacked up more. So besides rolling like crap and being more prone to flat spots that's another reason I was glad to see them go.

For sure.

The other funny thing was when wheels did get a bit bigger overall, people would still ride them down to almost nothing, so they ended up looking like old Mini Cubic wheels, wider than they were tall, when they were near the end of their life.  I still see some kids riding hand me down wheels (and everything else for that matter) that are beyond what most people would call a reasonable size, but at least they are skating and usually happy to get whatever they can from anyone else.

Most people I knew back then would ride anything on a complete until they couldn't anymore. If I had used gear I was changing out I'd offer it to friends or random kids hanging around.

Any opinions on the Bones Original Formula 100's? Been loving my OJ Elite Hardline 99s for an all-around wheel, and all the Spitfire F4's I've been on have been pretty great. But right now I'm looking to try something else just for fun. Are they worth it? I skate mostly transitions, also quite a lot of ashphalt, although not looking for softer wheels at the mo', I like them hard.

You'll be downgrading by a whole lot.

They're supposed to be budget wheels for new skaters or those that need to save. It's a decent wheel on smooth surfaces, but very lack luster on rough surfaces (it can still roll, just not greatly). Flat spot durability isn't great either.

I would say this is better answered in the Spitfire Formula Four thread, but what size would you like to have?  Both diameter and width?

The Conical 52 mm wheels are only 31 mm wide, which is pretty narrow, the 54mm barely over 32mm wide as well, so I am just wondering really what dimensions you would want?

You can use this as a reference for sizes, etc:

https://www.spitfirewheels.com/formulafour/

You would most likely be one of the many people who would ride Radial Slims just going by the stock dimensions of those wheels, which really are almost the same shape and just a bit thinner than Conical wheels, certainly no more in weight or how they perform.

I have used an angle grinder on Conical wheels to thin out the profile before for other Slap pals, as well as doing that on older Conical Full wheels to give a more rounded lip as I prefer Classics that have worn down a bit, so it wouldn't be too hard to make something work from their existing range in a shape you prefer.

Just a thought anyway.

Thanks. I threw out the idea in the F4 Thread. I’m familiar with all the shapes.

What I really want is a Classic shape, that’s Conical. Basically, a Bones V5 shape. I like the lock in of a conical, but slimness of a classic shape. The riding surface of a Classic is perfect also.

I’ve skated Bones V5, and they were great, just didn’t slide the same as a F4.

Sometimes settling on the "next best thing" is all you can do.

I get what you are saying about the shapes though, as I use a grinder to reshape wider / older wheels to my liking, more rounded edges on wide profile wheels, but that is just me.

What size do you usually ride, or what size are you looking at in the Conicals?

I recently moved from a city to a smaller town about 30 min out side of the city. There’s a metal prefab park here. I hate metal parks it’s like ice. But I live close to a few stores so I was gonna set up an old 9” slave deck some of my poor QC aces with the ovaled pivot cup or maybe some Indy’s for a gas station beer run board.

My question is what wheels will go relatively decent on normal to rough side walks and maybe as a bonus be decent on a metal mini ramp. I don really wanna spend a lot for dragons or bones x cause I don’t plan on this being my main set up just something to cruise to grab a beer or something. Or to tool around on with my son. I have some 99a conical regs. My old  local has:
Orbs 85a pugs.
Acid 86a skaterade funner formula filmer wheels
Oj 87a key frames.
Triclops 95a
Triclops 92a
Bones x v5

The Triclops and orbs are the cheapest bones x most expensive.

I was looking for some cheap oj nomads but no luck

The Nomads seemed quite slick and slippery on skatelite and metal, so probably best not to go with those anyway.

If it comes down to size, I would take a bigger wheel in any softer option, but any of the high 80 to low 90 duro wheels would work for metal ramp as well as getting from A to B as a cruiser.

I haven't tried most of those, Triclops or Orbs in particular, so don't know what the formula is like, but those 92 duro Triclops might work well for that if you did want cheaper wheels to see what they were like.

From that selection alone, if there were Bones in 90 duro, they definitely work well, as do the OJ keyframes, but that is just me from what I know and trust to work for those conditions.

Mini logo 90 duro wheels are half the price of Bones and a really good formula for softer wheels that ride well over everything, but as they are not on the list, they don't count.

The 95 duro wheels still skate well over everything, just a little more like the usual 99 duro wheels only a bit softer, compared to the cruiser wheels which are very soft and grippy at 80 to 90 duro.

After trying both 90 and 95 duro Mini Logo wheels a while back and keeping them on boards for others to use at the indoor park, they both held up well on slippery stuff and the 95 duro wheels were good as all rounders too.

I have 52, 54 and 56 mm in the 95s and 58 in the 90s, with the bigger ones being a lot more popular, but the smaller ones still work just as well.

Friend of mine swears by OJ Keyframe 87s, but I tried them and they felt like flat tires on a car. Grippy yeah, but hella slow.

Spitfire 99s can be a bit slippery on wood, but I personally enjoy the slideability.

However, in my experience, OJ Elite Hardline 99s are great for indoor parks. They are not as slippery on wood as Spitfire 99s, and are still fast. The wide riding surface provides control in my experience.

I also tried the 93(?) Dragons but found them too sticky for me as well. It's a matter of preference I guess. I need to have that ability to do micro slides on transitions etc. and have the board react on instant, instead of just feeling like it's on a train track.

People often have different experiences, but in general I think I had posted before that if you want more stability and don't want to slide out on any slick surface, be it a metal ramp, wood or other surface, indoor park, etc, something closer to 90 duro works better than something closer to 99 duro of any / every brand.

There are people who will ride the hardest wheels on the slickest surfaces and take it all in their stride, but then others who even just look a little one way or other, let alone lean one way or other will slip out and benefit from softer / more grippy wheels.

The 97 and even 95 duro options are ok too, but those formulas are still often going to slide maybe a bit too much, or still slide nicely for those who want more slide and less stick.

For more stick and less slip out, 90 to 93 duro wheels will often work well, as per the indoor park I help out with things, having quite a range of softer wheels in various brands and sizes.

Dragons have worked well - I don't own any but I have tried people's boards who skate them without issue and can still slide a bit on them without slipping out like they would on harder wheels.

Mini Logo come in 90, 95 and a good range of sizes too, without feeling like they were slowing things down compared to some other formula wheels.

Others I have around 90, 92, 93, 94 duro all work well, some skate faster than others, slightly bigger work better too, different shapes in some brands.

Lastly if you are more keen on grinds and slides (nose or tail slides) going for a higher duro will work better than a softer duro, but if all you want is not to slip out when skating around, then softer duro will probably work better overall.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

If you remember the Black Label Econoline wheels from the early 2000’s that would be my best comparison. I rode those on regular basis back then and these feel just a touch firmer than those which work great for me on the mostly brick surfaces I end up riding.

Plans for 52mm in the summer. My top sellers have been the larger sizes so they’ve been priority. Next drop will be a 54mm Conical in the Demolition Formula.
Demolition Formula is coming out of Generator.
KOTR series from Point.
