Anyone tried Seismic Axon wheels or their predecessors Seismic Focus? 55mm 95A/97A.
[close]

I saw a review for the Focus and the reviewer wasn't a fan at all. Compared them to F4 and Dragons/XF. Apparently they felt cheap and they had a weird, unpredictable grip characteristics.
Despite the warnings I tried the Seismic Axon in 95a.

I would say they are pretty much like the Seismic Focus wheels based on the review.. Cores have extra bits on them not shaved off, from one wheel the graphics fell off instead of wearing off, so def feel cheap. :D And sometimes they slip sometimes they grip depending on the surface.

However, they are grippy but fast on plywood surfaces. And add about 3/8" to the width of your undercarriage. If those two things are what you're looking for then it's a good wheel. With the "lightweight" cored design, compared to the Focus wheels you save four grams of weight, lol.

I ended up going back to 99 spits. I’ll probably still use the x99s when I come across a spot that may be too rough for the spits but the spots just feel right and slide better/faster/longer/consistsnt for me.

Got a set of Bones STF 99 V1 52mm for free, so I had to test them out. I've heard a lot of feedback about lack of slide was ready to hate them, but they are actually pleasantly skateable.

I dislike how soft they sound, coming from the same wheel but STF 103. They don't skrt like F4 99, but they slide nearly as well on ledges/curbs. I did find they don't powerslide as easily, but that isn't a dealbreaker for me.

I will skate em til they are dead, happily, but sound is important to me so I will stick to F4 when on 99 and STF 103 when comfort be damned.

I'd like to add-

I like the Bones V1 shape more than the F4 Classic shape.

My local park has this kind of weird bank to transition with noping that is hella round. It's hard to stay on when crosslocked- your front wheel wants to grab and climb onto the deck.

I feel like the V1 shape is marginally better overall for staying on in that niche circumstance. I also think visually it is a better looking shape.

Next up is a set of STF 103 V3. I have some dumb ideas that need investigating, and I'm hoping these will allow such

Rolling 52 93a dragons, with my last set of 52 99d radial slims in the bag if/when I hit up a park.

I keep hearing about Powell dragons and bones x formula. How are they? I've skated spitfires my whole life but I figure I might as well try something else for once. Also what bones is closest to f4 conical fulls
I didn't see anyone else answer this part so I think it would be the V6 Wide-Cut. Similar cut and same width but slightly less riding surface (still the most riding surface for any normal Bones wheels except their new V7).

It is a funny thing that the two top individual wheel brands make such a very different product for their own ranges, which doesn't really cross over a whole lot, even though some people say they can be very similar.

Any which way, people tend to be Spitfire lifers, or Bones lifers and often don't really cross over a whole lot, but there are always those who will try one of everything just to see what they are like.

They both make exceptionally good wheels for their own given market though.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

I was never that particular with wheel brands back in the day but I did like Bones wheels. When I started back up a few years ago, I got my first set of Spitfires and like them a lot (54mm 99A FF Conical Full). But I also just got the && NanoCubics and I like those too. Only thing is the sound factor people mention and those feel like I'm riding on pillows even though they aren't really that soft in comparison. Both are great wheels like mentioned and I think I'm good with wheels for quite some time but next set I get will likely be Spitfires again but will see what is available at the time.

First session on the STF 103 V3 52s today.

Been skating this horseshoe-shaped double sided curb a lot, doing long noseslides. Tryna learn popover. No baseplate, all wheel slide because it's so round.

More research to be done, but I think these work the best out of the formulas I've ridden. Still need to try F4 101, but I honestly like Bones shapes better right now so prolly stick to the STF 103s

I did a quick search with no luck,

Is there a table of wheel brands and their manufacturers?

Board manufacturers is a common topic of discussion but I don’t think I’ve ever known of where wheels are manufactured.

What brought me into this search is looking for more info on Cones Wheels.

Thank you.

Creative Urethane made a lot of the better b-tier brands. i think dial-tone, sml, jivaro among others used them. creative was bought by Mearthane who are just an front for a megacorp (compass group) that is buying up small polymer companies last few years. it's unclear from if they still operate old creative facility or what brands still use them.

-spitfire is dlx but i think technically Pointech is wheel division, like ermico is/was trucks. made in MX
-skate one makes bones and powell, US and china?
-hlc starting to do wheels too, wonder if they are gonna pour in house and where?
-nhs oj's, bullets, etc. i'm guessing has factory they use in china

being in US with an f4 bias i am having hard time thinking of many other wheel companies. i like this kind of behind the curtain info and the history of who actually made the stuff. creative claim to have been pioneers in making precision bearing skateboard wheels which had me wondering if they were the actual OEM for a lot of the brands going back to 70s

Pretty stoked to see this come up here!
Cones is my baby and we started in 2020 as an answer to the wheel shortage and the shop I was working at not being able to get enough wheels in stock. The concept was to allude to the ever continuing construction in our city and to show love for the DIYs that kept popping up.
First we were using Point Distribution but the model we wanted dried up and was replaced by something less conducive.
Currently we are going through Generator for our standard/team models.
Looking into proprietary urethane for pro models the first of which will be Dave Begonis from All I Need. (This being the first time it’s been mentioned publicly).

If you have any more questions I’d be happy to answer directly through dm or if the rest of the posters in this thread are interested I’m happy to do it here. (Trying not to derail the thread if it is unnecessary).

If anyone would like a discount code I have one created specifically for you all on SLAP I just have to look it up and I will post here.

Sorry for the long winded response and thanks for being interested!

I for one would love to hear everything about everything!

I'll admit I've been on the fence about grabbing a set of the demolition formula just because I've been disappointed in too many non Formula 4 wheels.

My opinion is the current Demolition Formula is pretty close in quality to the F4. Ours currently have the treaded finish which we are looking to change in the future for a more broken in feel from the start.
Seth Pernal and Rahim Shabazz (who both are currently am for World Industries) do a ton of blunt slides and lip slides on ledges have no issues of flat spots.
I have noticed personally that they perform equally well on both smooth and rough surfaces. I was surprised by their performance on well weathered east coast beach pavement last year.

What's the point of the tread? I don't mind it, wears off fast, but what's the point?

Many wheels start off the same size when they come out of the mold and are cut down to the specific size needed. The tread is usually just the marks left over from the lathe and serve no actual purpose that I’m aware of.

Modified to add the discount code for y’all:
SLAPPALS
I also raised it to 20% off

I should also mention we are currently being distributed through Club Distribution so if a model you want is sold out you can find it there.
We have another distribution that we just entered but I can’t say who for another week or so.

Skated the new loophole 58mm v cuts. Side by side with lock in fulls 57mm, the loophole is still wider.

I skated them for 30 to 40 minutes. They felt slower than f4s. Idk if its me tripping but i went down this slope no push and stopped farther away from my starting point on the loopholes than on the 58 radial f4s.

Wonder if they feel slower cause of the durometer difference. The loopholes lock in better than spitfire tablets 101a and spitfire lockins 99a without grabbing the ledge and getting stuck. I'm assuming its the durometer difference again.

Loophole is using the new HLC urethane right? Sounds like these could be a good quality non-Spit/Bones wheel option. How's the slide on them so far?

Yes, new hlc.
The fucking slide.
They feel harder than 101s. They do pretty good on shitty asphalt for a hard wheel. Will be skating more today

Any recommendations for a cheap but good wheel? Was looking at the tactics shop wheels, I think they were 20 bucks. 99a 52mm. Was also considering the sml grocery bag wheels, which I’ve ridden before and were pretty good for the price.

Tried the OJ Elite 95a outdoors today. Unlike indoors, where they were too slippery, they were perfectly fine. Feel like some regular hard wheels pretty much slide and speedwise. Slide a bit easier on rougher asphalt than smooth concrete. The Elite urethane does seem to be of higher quality than regular OJs.

They've got OJ Elites for as little as $25, anyone buying Tactics wheels to save five bucks is a fool.

Any recommendations for a cheap but good wheel? Was looking at the tactics shop wheels, I think they were 20 bucks. 99a 52mm. Was also considering the sml grocery bag wheels, which I’ve ridden before and were pretty good for the price.
