Why not rehab over winter and check in with your body in March and make a decision?

If you got a surgery now did they say how long before you have full range of motion and can skate?
[close]

If I do the surgery its at least 6-12 months rehab. My worries if that I wait to march, and I still cant skate I have to wait a while for a new appointment and surgery and then the rehab on top of it, would be out of skating for a long time then, instead of doing it now when its scheduled. Its a bit hard with two doctors giving me conflicting advice though  :(

It could be good to think a little more long term.  You seem too ready to jump into surgery.  I would take the least invasive route and rehab lightly with a PT and reevaluate after the winter like mentioned above.  I would even spend the cash for another MRI.  I’m not an expert but speaking from my friends experience, he got acl reconstruction surgery young and the issues continued and are still ongoing 10 years later.  Earlier this year he tore his acl again. It looks like he’s on the trajectory for a knee replacement later in life  Not saying that this will happen to you, just an example of what did happen in one case.  You should read about what can happen even after a successful surgery. An extra half year off the board isn’t bad at all when you think about it

Damn dudes, hope you all heal up quick!

While on the topic of Achilles injuries… I don’t think I full on ruptured mine, but I definitely did something to my foot and now it’s sore.  I drove up and down a mountain that required flexing it to pump the brakes for 30-40mins, and while at the top I landed weird going down rocks and possibly rolled my ankle.

I didn’t think much of it, until I looked down at my foot the next day, and it was swollen like a football, with random bruising on either side of my heel and between my toes.  Have a call with my doctor tmrw, which is also my first day back to work.  Here’s hoping it heals itself fairly quick.

I just want to say that I never go to doctors until it’s too late. You need to take my advice with a grain of salt. Maybe I should have gotten knee surgery. IDK.

I’m at a point where I don’t know when the next time I can Ollie without shooting pain in my rear thigh/groin and I still haven’t gone to a doctor.

Maybe just go with the doctor you like more. They are your partner in your healing so you want to like and trust them.

Little shotgun list of my most recent injuries

Went to back 180 off a whoop-de-whoop, landed one foot fully on the tail which popped the nose straight into my ulnar nerve. I seriously thought I severed it cause the pain was so sharp and intense. Urgent Care doc said I most likely just bruised/traumatized it. Still stops me in my tracks if i hit my "funny bone" on that arm

Busted my eyebrow at Burnside - got hung up on a hidden edge and fell straight to flat, broke the fall with my face

Smacked my dome at Marginal Way - another sneak attack... showed up and started trying to figure the park out. Completely unaware, I basically carved straight into the worlds smallest loveseat, clipped, and took a header to the back of the skull. Definitely shook me for the rest of the day

Tore a hammy trying to bluntslide a parking block, stepped off wrong/too fast and I could immediately feel I jacked my leg up

Went to roll in to a ~5' QP and hung up 110% - back wheels stayed on the deck and I slap the flatground like a ziplock bag full of hamburger. Never went to get checked out, but the breathing/chest pain and 6 week recovery made me pretty sure I cracked a rib or two. That one fucking sucked

All in all, pretty minor injuries all things considered (knock on wood) Tho I'm pushing 30 so we'll see how long I stay spry
Wow sorry, didn't realise I was dealing with a sick cunt here

More advise; never ever get surgery without doing the proper due diligence with imaging. Believe or not, there are some shitty fucking doctors out there. I'm gonna be an asshole and profile a bit here but I bet the first doc is older than the second right?

Gone to a second orthopaedic doctor (both a bit older) now - both have stated that my ACL is torn. Im scheduled finally for an MRI on the 21st from the new doctor, but my hopes for it to be streched only is kinda gone.  But who knows, miracle can happen haha.

Spoken to my Sports rehab PT´s and contacted a few others sports orthopaedic doctors trough Insta and such, and have a range of input now. Basically, if the ACL is torn, it will never be good, even with rehab. Big risk for arthritis and such. Leaning to just fix it with surgery and rehab the shit out of it.

If anyone done it, what grafts did you go for?

I’ve been skating lots more than usual the month.  Had 3 abdominal surgeries in the past 2 years. 47yo. Past few weeks have been so fun going to a park every morning. Did my 5 min lil leg stretch, then took a few laps without touching coping, before stretching again.  That’s been my routine.  Went up the very wall I enjoy most of all and caught somehow? Sticker maybe? Instantly straight right legged to flat then rolled out.  Upper calf was instant pain.  Trouble walking.  Home for 20 min ice . 600mg acetaminophen, then 25 mg flexiril. Can twist leg side to side, it’s just walking, or when I raise up my toes.  Pain moving higher from upper calf into lower knee, with occasional hotness. 3 12 hr shifts walking the next 3 days.  In 36 years I’ve only ever broken a rib skating.  Outer knee pain, sounds like runners knee, but that’s usually not from trauma. If I’m not good tomorrow, I’ll have to go to ER for imaging.  My good I feel old

One day until surgery.. For you who have your ACL done, did any of you used a TENS machine? Bought one today, might as well try it.

Ouch. Have you checked, if everything is alright with your achilles? Problem of raising toes might point to that. But also rupture if muscle fiber can feel like this.

Good Luck! Several of my friends, skaters and non skaters, have gotten surgery on their ACL and most who took rehab seriously are back to pre surgery performance. Just to share some positive experiences, too.

I woke up yesterday morning with my right ankle swollen to tennis ball size... Can't remember any tweaks or impacts, but maybe I'm just entering an age, where wear and tear starts to become more of a thing. Standing still and walking both hur quite a bit. I guess the rest of my body won't be mad either, if I take a week off skating to let it all calm down.

My mother in law had knee replacement 2 weeks ago and she’s already up and walking around. I think there has been advances in just the last 5 years that has reduced pain and recovery time.

Were you awake? What is the actual procedure (technical method) and which doctor did you go with?

Allen.

Feels like I tore or strained the tendon where my VMO or quad reaches the top of my knee.  The pain is like a perfectly straight line and matches up when I look at knee anatomy in one of those 3D medical apps.  Anybody else had this? It goes away until I squat in the slightest then the pain comes back full force

Currently out after a bad motorcycle accident. Shattered my wrist and fractured my clavicle, so it's probably gonna be about 6-8 months before I'm out skating again.

Nothing too serious here (knock on wood), but anyone have tips on healing up sore ankles/Achilles?  Both of mine feel pretty cooked after skating 5-6 days straight, and Advil + ice packs haven’t been doing too much.  Can’t really stay off them either since I work on my feet.

No tips on healing them, but if you’re having issues with them I’d say it’s worth getting checked out.
A bit over 3 months ago I fully ruptured my right achilles tendon on a switch push. I’d never had any pain, tightness, or issues prior so this injury was completely out of the blue.
I just turned 40, but am in good shape, stretch, and usually skate 3-5 days a week.
One of the things that I learned from the specialist is that it’s actually a fairly common injury for men in their mid 30s to 40s. Pain, swelling and tightness can be some of the beginning signs of tendinitis and/or the beginning of a rupture/tear. The doctor said that in the future if I feel any of that stuff happening on my healthy achilles that I should get it checked to rule out chances of a rupture.
Im pretty paranoid for obvious reasons, but this injury is awful with a 9-12 month recovery, so I’d air on the side of caution.
Just my opinion tho.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not really an injury but I think the time has come to get my wisdom tooth out, also have a problem tooth in front of it. Anyone have experience with when you can skate after a tooth extraction? Of course gonna ask the dentist but figured I’d see if anyones dealt with this and see if I can get a ballpark of when I can skate again

Pretty new posting here, long time lurker. went and skated before work and rolled my ankle. i rarely skate before i have to work. i usually wouldn’t be very bummed about it but i just finally started to feel fully recovered from when i rolled the same ankle at the beginning of september. i didn’t even get an entire month back on my skateboard. definitely feeling a little discouraged/disappointed.

Longtime lurker.

I got hit by a van as I was skating down and out of my driveway when I was 13.

Messed me up pretty good. Almost died, lost vision in one eye. Had to learn to walk again. Couldn’t skate for awhile.

Anyway I’m skating back again now, and I’m having a great time.

Aight, that's my topic right there. I got my two lower wisdom teeth removed a month ago. Craziest pain I ever been in honestly. The next 4 days after I was on painkillers and ate soups and stuff like that. Then it felt better. Make sure to ice it regularly. I was able to go for a light cruise after those 4 days. I went for a real session after 10 days. Then I suddenly got pain in another tooth 2 weeks ago. That asshole broke in two pieces while I brushed my teeth. It got removed and now I have a cool gap in my lower jaw, but the pain is way more managable now. There are still a few teeth which are causing problems but I am getting them all fixed now.

I also have a question. The inside of my heel, specifically the part, where the arch of your foot starts. That spot is hurting sometimes but it always goes away. I also only have it on my left foot, since that one is a bit longer as my right one. Am I wearing the wrong shoe size? Arthritis?
Oh and I have loose muscle tissue on my left hip, but that gets removed on monday.

Over the last 6 months or so, I've developed this hard lump on the right side of my knee that wasn't there before. It's hard like bone and there isn't any pain when I press down on it. I ended up getting some x-rays done a few weeks back and turns out I have some degenerative osteoarthritic changes. It's not that much of a shock because I did break my tibia right below my knee cap when was 15 which resulted in needing 3 screws to keep it in place.  It healed fine but the doctor did warn me that I would most likely get arthritis in my knee in my 30s and here we are. Turns out the hard lump on my knee is the result of bone growing over the screws.

I've been going over the results of my x-rays on the Kaiser app and I'm tripping on the results. Here's the gist of what's going on:

Right knee:

Moderate degeneration-Grade 3
Compartment: Lateral compartment degeneration is the greatest

The upside is that I don't encounter pain when I skate or anything. I'm honestly just worried about how it will effect my ability to skate in the long term. Have any of you been diagnosed with arthritis in your knee? If so, how has this effected your ability to skate?

I had this off and on for years until it stopped going away. I got some orthotics from the foot doc and wore them for years and never got it again. Nowadays you can get great aftermarket insoles for low arches and just run them in whatever shoe. I know Superfeet has insoles for high and low arches and they're not crazy expensive.

I have arthritis on both knees after multiple meniscus surgeries. But I can still skate and I'll be 50 next year! Basically I try to avoid jumping.....That means very few ollies and no flip tricks on street, and skating transition often. No complys feel ok. I can't play football (soccer) anymore or tennis or basket ball....But I can still cruise and adapt and have fun on the board. My knees actually feel better this year than last year for some reason. when I was 18 the surgeon said I would have major knee issues in my 40's.....But so far so good. It's just impossible to predict. so don't despair!

I have arthritis on both knees after multiple meniscus surgeries. But I can still skate and I'll be 50 next year! Basically I try to avoid jumping.....That means very few ollies and no flip tricks on street, and skating transition often. No complys feel ok. I can't play football (soccer) anymore or tennis or basket ball....But I can still cruise and adapt and have fun on the board. My knees actually feel better this year than last year for some reason. when I was 18 the surgeon said I would have major knee issues in my 40's.....But so far so good. It's just impossible to predict. so don't despair!

I appreciate the response dude. I'm just hoping to get another solid 5 years of low impact skating before I have to give up jumping and become a slappy god.
