I remember when people first started doing tail grabs they were captioned as fresh fishes?! Ahh, the inadequacy of memory...

Are you possibly thinking of the seat belt?

So good. I taught English in France in 2011-2012. Had no idea some influential skate camp was held there 25 years earlier. They had the shittiest metal park on rough asphalt.
I thought it wasnt just him solo, shouldve stuck with my og thought.

I've had this photo burned into my memory since I was 14 and only now do I see it wasn't a proper stalefish. He grabs in front of his body not behind.

Saw Gonz do a stalefish in 1987 at the Westwood, NJ jump ramp demo. The Australia vert ramp photos must have occurred beforehand.

Grabbing with the back hand in front of your legs is a fresh fish (yes? no?)

I've always considered a Roast Beef as back hand in-between your legs, grabbing like a stale-fish.

We would call the same thing but with the front hand a 'chicken-salad' grab.. although I've never heard anyone aside from my 12yo skate buds say that.

The name "stalefish" seems coincidentally close to the Stelmasky plant (roast beef grab with the front hand). They're both "stale" in truncated form.

There are videos from 1986 with Hawk landing gay twist stale grabs. I thought there was a consensus that Hawk did them first.

Here's the first documented picture of the grab as far as I can tell:
Hawk doing the Stale Gay Twist in Neil Blender's Aggrozone column in Transworld.

Didn't have a name at that point, the end of the caption reads:
"Here [Tony Hawk] does god knows what over the channel."

it's such a trip to think that just 30 years ago, you could invent a way to grab your board.
and compare that to what it takes to make a NBD nowadays.
the speed of the progression from '85 - '95 could never be duplicated.

Yeah it's nuts how they didn't think of grabbing that way....but I think it comes to how guys did airs....Ollie in was whack it was something Hawk did.....it'd be so weird to bump one grabbed early on a vert ramp.

I can see how it would have seen insignificant because gonzs looked better and Hawk did a 720 so who cares about a weird grab.

Kinda funny how bent the dude is on proving it wasn't Hawk.....

So wait - who did it first?:)

I been down with the fish since 87ish. James Kelch was the first one I saw do one. At EMB in the 80s there were always a bunch of dudes posted up on the stage just doing different ollie grab variations (& usually street plants).
