Thunder 151 or 161s. I mostly skate pretty big boards, usually 9+ even up to 10 (eggs). I've been mostly on Ace classics for 5-6 years now. I skate 56mm wheels so I would probably need risers for Thunders. I also use 1/8 risers with Ace. I havent skated thunders in years and dont really have any idea how they felt but I remember I skated best on those but those years I was the most active and younger with less injuries. Maybe 2013-14 was when I had a set of standard team editions either 149 or 151s. I skate mostly flat curbs, some transition or just cruise around. I'm kind of done with Ace for now. I tried Indies recently but they're not for me.
As someone who’s perpetually caught between Ace and Thunder, I’ll say that I skate noticeably better on thunders. I’m riding hollow lights very comfortably on 54mm so the height isn’t gonna be as big of an issue as you might think. The only reason I keep going back to Ace is because I’ll have a bunch of good sessions on thunders and talk myself into thinking I can do the same shit on aces. Thunders really do give you more control than any other truck.
Thanks! I think I'm going for Thunders then. What's the turning like with T1s? I found some of my older footage it seems I have no issues with turn. I read people say Thunders dont turn for shit but I dont recall having that issue ever. I never tighten my trucks and leave them stock.
I think turning on any truck can be relative to what you had before, or how you like your trucks. Ace turn is so quick compared to Thunder, but then again, some people don't like how much turn Ace have and prefer a more stable truck with a slower turn too. Getting on a different brand truck can be weird at first, but usually in a few sessions at most, you get more used to how they feel, but any truck can turn well enough if you either have enough clearance, eg wheel wells or risers on lower trucks like Thunder. Some bushing options can help that too, eg taller bottoms combined with lower tops really get original Thunders turning more.
Also to note, the 161s are 53 mm tall in the cast baseplate versions, whereas the 151s and lower are 52 mm tall in cast (lower again when down in 147s and below). The height is in the hanger, so getting forged baseplate versions, they would be a mm or so lower again, but if you were wondering between 151 and 161, the 161s are a bit taller too.
The main thing for me was the kingpin clearance on the original Thunders, so some tricks would just not work as well, but for anyone not worrying about that, they still skate great, have enough turn with options mentioned above, and work well enough on most boards, although I find they are more comfortable on shorter wheelbase boards, especially now I have tried the T-II which feel closer to Ace in wheelbase and turn, so I try to pair my original Thunders with boards I can either redrill or come with shorter wheelbases. That's just me though and I know I am all kinds of special for some things.
