Thinking about trying the t-2’s. I know that the height and smaller wheelbase will take some getting used to. Currently skating the indy hollow mids.

Slap,

I am looking for some new wheels, I want some wide, squarish, wheels in the 52-54mm 97-99 (might try 101 see below)
and that have a 20-23mm contact patch.

On the list currently:
Ricta Speed Rings Wide 54/22/99
OJ Elite Hardline 53&54 /23/99
OJ Double Duro Hardline 101/95
Spitefire F4 Lock-in Fulls 54/25/99
Maybe some Snot Wideboys

Input - suggestions?

Thanks
[close]
Conical Fulls (22) or OG Classics (22.5) for 54 mm, if you haven’t tried them. That’s what I get when Radial Fulls are sold out, but in 56-60 mm.

I’m thinking of getting a pair of the Air Max 95s from 303:
https://www.303boards.com/products/nike-sb-air-max-95-black-cacao-wow

Also, I’m looking for stainless steel bearings that I can pack with white lithium so I can skate in the shitty weather. These are what I’m considering unless someone has recommendations:

Should be fine but for what purpose? In general, I'd say the T-II should be better for decks with longer wheelbase. Basically, T-II for a larger, carvy setup and Indy Mids for smaller, more tech feeling setup. I recently switched my trucks on a longer wb deck from Thunder standards (which are similar to Indy Mids) to T-II and it feels better to me with the T-II. Less wheelbase, less kingpin scrape and better pop on an older deck.

So I’ve been skating 25 years now, kept it pretty standard with my setups. Until 2025.

Skf bearings, imo much much better than bones Swiss. 5 pushes on Swiss is 2 with skf.

I also got some quantum diamond bearings, thankfully I got that at retail. These things spin fast. But the skf are smoother. And 1/4 of the price.

Spitfire 97a wheels in 53 and 56 classic, also 54mm conical. Any of these with skf make skating around Boston feel more like I’m skating somewhere with smooth ground. On top of that, they don’t hang you up on any tricks they’re my favorite wheel.

Spitfire 93a. A little too soft for my liking, but good enough for a filmer board. With the quantum bearings they’re scary fast. With both 97 and 93 you don’t get stopped abruptly from pebbles or whatever. Just bounce over.

Tried Santa Cruz vx deck. Flat, strong as fuck, but wasn’t into it.

Deluxe DBX boards, felt great, kept their pop, but felt kind of to flexible at the end of the day.

Today I got an 8.5 Powell flight, very interested to see how it performs.

Also tried thunder t 2 and the v8 ventures. They’re just trucks.

Yes I try a ridiculous amount of product. The stuff is usually given to a less fortunate homie when I’m done. I’m almost 36, I’ve got the money, trying different modern technology in skating is fun for me. Excited for this powell.

Looking for to your take on the Powell

Very different trucks. What do skate and what do you prioritize? Turn? Pinch/Kingpin clearance? Do you like a higher or lower truck? Longer or shorter wheelbase? What kind of boards do you skate?

Came from ace and tried ventures. Took some getting used to but overall a nice change. Good pinch and pop and nice weight reduction from ace. Wasn’t disappointed at all
I’m on Indy rn tho and getting lurpivs next just cause I have been wanting to try everything

Im a tall ass dude and I skate mainly transition and the dinkiest little street spots n curbs. As an og surf styliee skater, I do value a great carve, but in semi-recent day I've been jazzed that I can actually pop my board just fine, and I actually really enjoy skating a nice box or something too.

Stability has been interesting lately. I used to ride my trucks truly as loose as they possibly can go. No wonder I could hardly trust an ollie.. I've always been a 9+ board scramian layback nuisance.

Ventures look sick to me in GX1000 footy, but nobody I know rides them. Lurpivs look sick stage 1 Indy vibe, but I've heard they actually have a nice blend of stability. Trust in hill bombs is always a plus.

If you're not prioritizing pinch, kingpin clearance, or getting technical... sounds like Lurpivs are a lot more up your alley, especially if you mainly skate transition

Tempted by that blue Palasonic.
8.1 on 8.25 trucks sounds intriguing.

I haven’t had a Baker deck in 12-13 years. This seems perfect for 5.8 Ventures.

I’m about to ask the local to order me one, but I can’t tell whether I’ll like the nose from top views online. Has anyone skated this shape before?

The question I have is regarding that shape, as it is not the usual 8.475 x 31.875 with 14.25 wb, so I wonder if they have scaled it down, or is it a typo on the info there.

See the Baker shape guide for their normal shape:

https://bakerskateboards.com/pages/board-construction

* A lot of companies are putting out shorter wb boards, so it would be good if this was the case, but also wondering if they are keeping the old shape or just doing this one now?

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

The old shape isn't going anywhere, pretty much the whole baker and deathwish teams skate either the 8.475/8.25 with 14.25 wheelbase

I had seen some of those 14" wb bakers floating around on like January 2nd...  The 8.25 was listed with a different length than normal, but the 8.475 had the same length as usual so I was wondering if it was a typo for the bigger one, but the 8.25 seemed legit

Then I saw bakers spring drop on Instagram that had some on there too, definitely legit, but not replacing their 2 best-selling boards by any means

With like, primitive and Hardbody being so about 8.25" x 14", and the dlx true fits and stuff, it makes sense

For sure!

Even how Polar, Generator and other brands have the 8.5 and 8.5 Short, or the 8.25 and 8.25 Short, or others like that.  The regular shape is still a good one, but people are liking the shorter wheelbase versions too, so it makes sense to have the two options like that.

I love that there's so many short wheelbase options out now

Sci-fi sometimes has the 8.25 shorts

I feel like this sorta range is where the top sellers are right now

8.25 x 14
8.25 x 14.25
8.5 x 14.25
8.5 x 14.5

It's cool to see more 8.5 extra shorts though, and the true fit 8.5 which would be like an extra extra short at 13.75"

I tried to convince myself that 14" was the way to go for me but ended up back on 14.25 after a month

I can pretty much get whatever sick new graphic I want if I stick to between 8.25 and 8.5, always 14.25 wb, everybody's got something in that range

Safety-wise, this might be a better purchase:

Does anyone who uses helmets for bigger transition have recommendations? Both are certified but the Triple 8 has MIPS.

Tensor maglight lo or Royal ultralights.

Tensor los would need risers.  Not sure about the wheelbase of both.
Spent most of my life on Indy and now on ace, but just want to have a light board for fun.

Also I went for a cruise in some running shoes and it felt surprisingly good.  Popped a few Ollies and basically tore a hole immediately. and I’m looking for whatever skate shoe has a midsole that resembles a running shoe the most

Go for the Royals, because you probably can’t get more Tensors if you end up liking them.

For shoes, the #1010, #770, or #933 are probably the closest to what you want. You could get Telfords, if you don’t have issues skating Lakais, but most shops only carry the old stock before the buyout. Puig Sambas and the Tekkira Cups are also options, but I have no idea how those skate.

Having a hell of a time finding a board. Looking for a bbs mellow concave, 8.25, shorter wheel base, not quiet twin tail but close, and I like my tails and noses under 7. Get so confused with some places using multiple shops, and tactics blanks being in short supply.

I don't know if I could tell the nose was shorter than the tail, it would drive me crazy. I like the G089, and then the g502. Thanks for the recommendations, will post in the woodshop thread to see if some professors can help.

Thunder 151 or 161s. I mostly skate pretty big boards, usually 9+ even up to 10 (eggs). I've been mostly on Ace classics for 5-6 years now. I skate 56mm wheels so I would probably need risers for Thunders. I also use 1/8 risers with Ace. I havent skated thunders in years and dont really have any idea how they felt but I remember I skated best on those but those years I was the most active and younger with less injuries. Maybe 2013-14 was when I had a set of standard team editions either 149 or 151s. I skate mostly flat curbs, some transition or just cruise around. I'm kind of done with Ace for now. I tried Indies recently but they're not for me.

As someone who’s perpetually caught between Ace and Thunder, I’ll say that I skate noticeably better on thunders. I’m riding hollow lights very comfortably on 54mm so the height isn’t gonna be as big of an issue as you might think. The only reason I keep going back to Ace is because I’ll have a bunch of good sessions on thunders and talk myself into thinking I can do the same shit on aces. Thunders really do give you more control than any other truck.

Thanks! I think I'm going for Thunders then. What's the turning like with T1s? I found some of my older footage it seems I have no issues with turn. I read people say Thunders dont turn for shit but I dont recall having that issue ever. I never tighten my trucks and leave them stock.

Thanks! I think I'm going for Thunders then. What's the turning like with T1s? I found some of my older footage it seems I have no issues with turn. I read people say Thunders dont turn for shit but I dont recall having that issue ever. I never tighten my trucks and leave them stock.

I think turning on any truck can be relative to what you had before, or how you like your trucks.  Ace turn is so quick compared to Thunder, but then again, some people don't like how much turn Ace have and prefer a more stable truck with a slower turn too.  Getting on a different brand truck can be weird at first, but usually in a few sessions at most, you get more used to how they feel, but any truck can turn well enough if you either have enough clearance, eg wheel wells or risers on lower trucks like Thunder.  Some bushing options can help that too, eg taller bottoms combined with lower tops really get original Thunders turning more.

Also to note, the 161s are 53 mm tall in the cast baseplate versions, whereas the 151s and lower are 52 mm tall in cast (lower again when down in 147s and below).  The height is in the hanger, so getting forged baseplate versions, they would be a mm or so lower again, but if you were wondering between 151 and 161, the 161s are a bit taller too.

The main thing for me was the kingpin clearance on the original Thunders, so some tricks would just not work as well, but for anyone not worrying about that, they still skate great, have enough turn with options mentioned above, and work well enough on most boards, although I find they are more comfortable on shorter wheelbase boards, especially now I have tried the T-II which feel closer to Ace in wheelbase and turn, so I try to pair my original Thunders with boards I can either redrill or come with shorter wheelbases.  That's just me though and I know I am all kinds of special for some things.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.
