Sole Tech, like most other companies using cheap foreign labor, use what’s called Greenwashing to divert attention away from the unethical way their products are made both in regards to their affect on the environment and the unethical treatment of the humans making the products. “Plant a tree,” “give away shoes,” etc...

It’s near impossible to find unbiased information on specific factories. When the company owners are gone and the cameras are put away, that’s when these violations occur. According to https://www.ethical.org.au and some German source they use which I can’t read because I don’t know German, Sole Tech has an F rating which is worse than Nike’s D rating. No skate shoe companies listed have above a D rating.

Best case, with confidence you can buy a vegan skate shoe from a handful of skate shoe companies. If human rights are important to you, you cannot confidently support any skate shoe manufacturers as far as I know.

Here’s another site ranking Etnies way worse than Nike.

https://rankabrand.org/sportswear-sports-shoes/Etnies

I could've sworn the same folks you're referencing gave Adidas/Reebok a decent rating for their transparency and willingness to observe working conditions in their factories.

I know this site gave them decent marks.

https://www.aktiv-gegen-kinderarbeit.de/firmen/firmenliste/
It states for Etnies:
Business policy against child labor: not available
Control of production facilities: not available
Accusations of using child labor: green = no accusations

Adidas had decent marks there too. The whole point of my reply was that you *can* get big brand shoes made relatively ethically. Also--and your point about etnies proves this--you can't really make assumptions about the ethics of a company based on size. Sure, Nike are sleazeballs, but there are definitely smaller companies trying to keep costs as low as possible and contracting out to shady factories.

no one bit so I actually went out and skated them and was pleasantly surprised.

Size: tts. or at least tts for what I wear in vans/ sole tech

Support: not bad for a slip on Vulc, they felt a little shallow at first but I was coming from cup soles and I think I needed the insoles to squish out a bit? The addition of the two laces holes means you can lace them tighter if they start to bag out. no heel slip and they feel nice and secure on your feet!

Break in time: non-existent, the last pair of vulcs I had were States and they felt like they needed to be broken in. Ben Degros recently reviewed some lakai vulcs and I agree with him: you can pretty much just put them on and skate them straight out of the box.

Grip/ Boardfeel: I love gum colored rubber, it feels more grippy to me? board feel is on par with any other vulc, I like how they have harder rubber around the ball of your foot and heel sections too which makes the sole feel more sturdy.

Durabilty: better than canvas, but I'm already seeing wear & tear after 2 sessions and I'm not that hard on my shoes (my eS from a few pages back still look brand new!)

Pros: non-canvas slip on with lace loops that don't have any break in time, but do have lots of grip and board feel

Cons: I think you'd burn through them if you're harsh on shoes. I'd also love to see them in a mid.

In summary: Glad lakai is offering vegan options, would like to see these options trickle through to their cup sole range too though

How about skating Veja? They are a totally vegan and ethical shoe brand rating at the top in most survey's.

https://www.veja-store.com/en/6-men

Sure they are not dedicated skate shoes but the shape and build suggests they should work well. Anyone tried them.

Do they walk the shoes to the shops after they make them? If not, that's unethical. Totally bummed they'd go through the hard work of making a vegan shoe then using a vehicle with those terrible terrible seats and fossil fuels/chemicals in the containers

And afterwards I’ll come back and derail this thread some more with posts about the environmental aspect of synthetics, ethical labor, and how maybe suede is *actually* better for the planet because it lasts longer.

Yes the price is high, but that's the price you pay if you don't want your shoes made by kids in sweatshops...

Looks like they'd skate well and hold up to some abuse. I might give them a go and report back.

okay you be our guinea pig! I mentioned a few pages back but I'm happy to pay for high end ethically made (vegan) shoes for boots/ work shoes etc. but if I'm going to pay $100 for a shoe to skate in, I need to make sure it's going to at least skate good

Ordered a pair of Osiris Relic shoes. 50€ for synthetic nubuck instead of canvas is good enough. Might try the eS Accel Slim ones next if I don’t like the Osiris shoes.

Just received my first pair of Ethiko footwear.
To be honest I didn't think they would seem so skatable.

Totally feel like Cons, with a better arch support.

I'm injured right now but I will give them a try for sure.

Would be funny, if that small white piece on a back is leather. Like Vans does - all canvas shoe with a leather side stripe.

yeah, those forwin shoes look really good. i don't like the logo too much, but the shoes seem to be well made and since the founder has skateboarding background, i wouldn't be surprised if the 3 models apart from the runner and the outdoor boot would skate pretty well.

haha! had them sitting on ice for a while, I actually bought two pairs and the tts ones were a tad big so I decided to size down but 9.5 were too tight :( I remember those bulletproof syndicate ones, they were rad. I bought those canvas ones in Japan but I do't think it was a Japan only release.
