It's not like this was the first stupid thing Ali had ever done. He'd based his image on being a drunk, dangerous "I don't give a shit" fuckwit for years. And when the accident happened, I more or less felt it was just a case of his luck having run out. And I blamed him for the whole situation. Especially, seeing as he'd spent years selling that stupid behavior to impressionable kids.
But now, in hindsight, I feel really bad for the guy. It's not like this was a deliberate act of malice. It was an accident, and one that has already ruined his career and resulted in the death of a friend. Throwing him in jail for several years strikes me as a completely unnecessary twist of the knife.
I just don't see what good can really come from it.
