70mm Imax Dunkirk was worth the $20.50 ticket. "Powerful" would be an apt, one word summation.

For real, Imax is the way to see this one. I dug it. I left the theater feeling like I'd had a panic attack, which I put largely down to the score. I can't imagine what kind of psychopath would throw on the soundtrack album for pleasure.

Yeah, that was intense.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

This Mystery Science Theatre episode, where the main film is an Ed Wood movie from 1960, on the dangers of pornography.

Dunkirk was wonderful. I also just watched Locke and I enjoyed that quite a bit.

I feel like I'm too bitter to watch movies these days, everything is predictable and sucks. I suck.

I love how coked up Paul Thomas Anderson clearly is in this documentary on the making of "Magnolia".

Finally saw "Dunkirk" in Imax last night. For other Philly Pals: It's playing at the Franklin Institute for $15 a ticket.

I didn't love it, but it was definitely good. Seeing it in Imax definitely made the experience better in some ways (the epic, "long lens" type shots looked and sounded amazing), but since I don't think it was shot specifically for Imax, a lot of the closeup shots appeared distorted, and it was difficult to pay attention to everything in frame.

Franklin Institute's imax is the fucking worst for regular movies (I.e. Anything but science documentaries).

I saw one of the recent Mission Impossible movies there and it was almost unwatchable from my seat. Saw Inception there too and I guess it was less awful from a high center position.

I saw Dunkirk at King of Prussia which has a slightly curved but not spherical screen. Way better.

95% or so of Dunkirk was shot on IMAX but mainly for the detail and aspect ratio. When I watched it only the non-IMAX looked out of place.

Pretty sure they use different lenses when it's meant to be shown on those bubble screens.

I think they were showing Dunkirk at the Prince Music Theater in 70mm non-IMAX which is probably the next best format.

Just watched It.

I read the book to prep for the movie a few months ago, but you won't get much out of the crossing.
The movie is really good. Not perfect, but they basically used the book as a guideline and made a really punk version.
It's funny, scary, and gnarly. I didn't looove any of the kids. They couldn't really focus as much as they needed to on any
particular kid to make you really like them, but you'll be able to distinguish each one and what their deal is.
The clown is rad. He doesn't come off human like Curry did. Almost like something is working the clown, which if you
never read the book, is kind of the idea.

Scariest part, for me, is Tubs in the library. Just look in the background when he's through flipping the pages.

And they, I feel, achieve getting across the sewer orgy junk in the most subtle and amazing manner.
The Cure - Six Different Ways.

I'm not sure what you typically enjoy in a movie, but I've found it to be the case that those recent Mission Impossible movies are more or less unwatchable no matter where you sit.

Even the one with Philip Seymour Hoffman as the villain, was really only enjoyable when he was onscreen.

They're probably the type of movies that are fun enough, when you see them in theaters though.

I'm pretty excited to see "Good Time" later this week:

The Clash: Westway To The World
This documentary was alright, kinda muddled some stuff together without much explanation. Would've asked a whole different array of questions but it had its moments that make you chuckle. Watch it if you appreciate the band.

In Order Of Disappearance

Fell in love with the scenic shots in this film; can't imagine living in place engulfed by snow.

Watched Louis Theroux's "My Scientology Movie" today, it didn't do anything new in terms of his documentary's and doc's on Scientology in general. It was a good watch to have on in the background but I really as expecting a little more from it.

Also rewatched 28 Weeks Later last weekend, I love Robert Carlisle.
I'm going to argue that Placebo owes their entire career to a Canadian dude's skate video part. Appleyard should be getting royalties for this shit.

Yeah, I'm a pretty big fan of some of Theroux's other documentary work, but I was definitely a little disappointed in his Scientology doc.

Like you said, it was a solid overview, but I was expecting him to cover some new ground.

There's a ton of docs on youtube that he did, that are worth watching. The ones on meth, Nazis, Westboro Baptist Church, North Philly, and this jail in Miami, are all good, among others.

Dunkirk, for all reasons stated above, was one of the most intense cinematic experiences I've had.

Saw It recently. It wasn't scary, but definitely entertaining. I imagine my experience with the film would have been better if I had resisted obsessively reading about the films progress up to release. I did, however, leave the film oddly inspired.

Going to see Mother! tonight. Mixed reviews but I love Aronofsky's work, and even his worst films are worth seeing and dissecting.

Mindfuck. Just absolute insanity.
I'd say see it just to see it. There is a lot of symbolism at play, a lot of brutality...
Don't even know what to say about it. Not a film I'll probably ever watch again, but not in a bad way. It's a fucking experience.

I saw Mother a few days ago.

I kind of assumed I knew what it was trying to say, then I read some stuff to explain the other levels which made me want to watch it again. I thought it was good. Not really a horror film so much as a wagging finger at humanity, but definitely interesting. My friend told me it's getting backlash from peeps that assumed it was going to be about female empowerment. It is not.

*****SPOILERS*****

I'm still not sure what Cain was talking about when he says something like "Oh. You still don't get it." I'm guessing he was reffering to why God would seem to favor someone else for no reason.

I just watched Wind River this afternoon and really liked it. It's pretty brutal at times, but I've always loved Jeremey Renner since The Town, and he does an awesome job in this. I also love films that show stark and desolate landscapes. So, Vinchenzo, if you liked In Order of Disappearance, I'm sure you'll dig this.

I saw Mother! last Saturday.  Super good.  I'm a big Aronofsky fan.  I fucking loved it as an experience.  I don't know if my anxiety has ever been so ramped up as it has in the final act of the movie.  I live in a small midwestern town though, and heard 80% of the audience talking shit on it afterwards.  Everything from a woman telling an usher "You owe me $10", to another lady saying "You need to have a preacher and a therapist on standby for people who watch this."  It was brutal, but an interesting take on religion and the environment quickly going to shit.  I may see it again in theaters just because the sound design is so 3 dimensional.

Oh, I concur. I saw it on a lark with a friend and it was trash.

Clash Docs: I kind of prefer the band focus of Westway although it does glide through everything in a way that feels superficial. I like that Joe gets to speak on the matter before he passed. He's also in the Ramones doc which is somewhat of a depressing counterpoint to Westway. The Future Is Unwritten is definitely worth the watch, too.

I liked Louis Theroux's series because he was a very empathetic interviewer although I thought he looked super silly in the bulletproof vest in Philadelphia neighborhoods that aren't the bad during the day. His dad's travel books are great although he seems like an asshole.

Assassination of Jesse James is one of my favorites. It's been on my HBO streaming queue forever but I can never seem to spare 3 hours on anything these days. I think it's leaving this month...

Just got back from watching Mother! I didn't care for Noah all that much so I was a bit worried about this going into it. Aronofsky delivered thoug. I wish Jennifer Lawrence wasn't in the film, but, it's whatever. Also, I haven't seen Michelle Pfeiffer in forever so that was kinda dope to see her back on the screen. This will be a film that's floating around in my head for the next week or so since it has a lot to digest.

Just caught IT myself... enjoyed the hell out of it! Not the scariest film for sure, but there were some scenes that were pretty damned intense. Having said, I went into it without having seen any reviews or even the trailer, just the poster (which made me a bit skeptical). Once I saw Pennywise in action, I was a fan.

On top of that, once they did the opening scene... I was like "oh shit, it's gonna be THAT kind of movie!" Immediate fan after that. I enjoyed the original mini series, but this was def an upgrade. The kids in the movie were surprisingly good actors. They seriously pulled it off. Looking forward to part 2.

I went as far as checking out the sneak preview showing the night before it was released...  For me it had more of a Goonies or Stand By Me vibe to it.  The ensemble of child actors were great.  Seriously great comic timing (I loved the NKOTB jokes).  To me, the scariest parts of the film were the kids interacting with adults, and the underlying theme that you can't trust grown ups.  It reminded me of being a kid and ripping around town on bikes all day doing dumb but harmless stuff.

One of the creepiest intentional scares for me was during the projection screen scene, although without giving too much away got ruined for me by the end of it.  Pretty cartoony.  I wish given the era they were in (80's) that they would've done away with CGI shit.  It seemed too contemporary in that regard.  I'd love to see more practical effects and think that would've been a good salute to late 70's and 80's horror stuff.

Saw mother! last night, it is not an easy watch, and if you aren't well versed in the book of Genesis it won't make much sense, but it is very original.

A movie that you won't want to see twice, but have to see once.
