Got the 14-day free trial for The Criterion Channel and caught some great movies over the weekend; Cache, Police Story, and Babylon. All really good.

If you love films, get the Criterion Channel. I might actually subscribe to it.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

While the plot was easy to see coming, it was done beautifully and the nostalgia and all the emotions had me crying for most of the film. Tom Hanks did a stellar job like usual.
Nothing I do deserves more than an iphone camera.

It's okay to cry when I saw the trailer awhile back I didn't notice till my wife told me I was acting funny. I liked the show and the way he said "I like you for who you are" makes me weep.

The Irishman was great

Grew up down the street from Russ's house/where he's buried. The book The Quiet Don does a great deep dive on Buffalino if you're ever in the mood for a great mob read

Agreed. One of the only longer than usual films I didn’t look at the clock or feel bored... sans godfather (not part 3- that shit was garbage).

The Lighthouse. Every aspect of the film (soundtrack, performances, cinematography, direction, production design, writing) was absolutely perfect in every way. The menacing dread underlying the film really got under my skin in the best way possible. Really happy I got to see this in an actual theatre - it really added to the experience. A24 is the present and future of auteur cinema done to the highest degree.

I really want to see this. Looks like it’s only playing an hour away from my house. Wondering when/if it will come to every theatre and not just in Hollywood (Southern Californian here).

EDIT: Listened to a Fresh Air interview with Willem Defoe (not conducted by Terry Gross but some dickhead who borderline blew the interview). Fascinating hearing how he researched the time period/ geographic location of the character.

Found a random one the other day. At first I thought it was awful but now I recognize it as the best thing I've seen in years. Very strange. As Todd Solondz Happiness is to American Beauty, so Darkly Noon is to Donnie Darko, or something like that.

Just saw Ford vs Ferrari. A little more Hollywood then I was hoping for but still a great movie . I love movies that take place back in the 50-60’s

Once upon a time in Hollywood was awesome. Spoilers: Didn't do much research for the movie and thought it was like a historically accurate biopic, and only thing I knew about the history is Manson and his buddies killed a bunch of movie people. So for the whole movie I'm more and more pissed off at the damn hippies and bummed out about Cliff and Rick getting murdered. Then in the end the movie goes like nah, fuck that, and ends all badass. Felt so happy about it.

The title definitely insists the fairy tale approach to the the story. It's like a big "what if" that is really rewarding. Definitely one of Tarantino's best films and among the best in this decade.

While in no means is it a good movie, Brawl in Cell Block 99 with Vince Vaughn as a "tough" guy sent to prison is a great watch for it's cartoonish violence & terrible dialogue.  It's like a modern version of a 70s b-movie revenge tale. Don't go out of your way if there's other things you'd rather see but if you can't think of anything i recommend checking it out...it's on Amazon prime.

that tweet was pretty funny, and somewhat spot on (although I wouldn't put Taxi Driver in that group).

i thought the Irishman was ok at best.  it's essentially Goodfellas part 3, (Casino being part 2), and it was enjoyable but absolutely nothing made it stand out from his other mob films (or any other mob film).  same characters, same style... people I know consider it a masterpiece of modern cinema and I can't quite figure out why...  the length?  I feel like if you make a 3+hour movie people automatically assume it's a work of genius.

Watched a few movies over the past week and a half.

IT Chapter 2: Pretty lackluster attempt to develop the second half of such a rich story. Tonally inconsistent and sometimes laughable but still had it's entertaining bits to keep me interested for a three hour movie.

Pet Sematary: A swing and a miss to reinvent a movie that didn't really need to get remade...

The Color of Money: I'm really glad I finally watched this. Scorsese came in hot with this one; great story, great visuals, terrific performances. Highly recommended.

Falling Down: I have to finish this but this film feels all too real given the increasing amount of mass shootings. Psychologically immersive and pretty human, given the inhumane behavior of it's main character.

Watched "Parasite" on Friday, read a couple reviews and knew it got some festival hype and I've seen snowpiercer and Okja so I was a fan of his other stuff but went into it not knowing much about the plot. Highly recommend Parasite. It's in Korean with English subtitties but it's the best movie I've seen in years.

I watched a nice screener copy 'Uncut Gems' yesterday. Pretty good, definitely recommend a watch. Just shows that when Adam Sandler has good dramatic material and a good director he can actually act pretty well. He has done it in the past, but not very often. Pretty crazy how the dude can do some shit like jack n jill, then also do something worth while like uncut gems, or punch drunk love.
