Silent Partner is a solid movie in general, but another good Christmas time movie in particular
I love Elliott Gould, Christopher Plummer is creepy as hell in it, and there's some cool shots of late 70s Toronto in it

This movie was fuckin awesome and ended up watching The Long Goodbye after. Elliot Gould is the fuckin man. What a difference in character between films too.  In the Long Good Bye he was exactly what I picture as a young cool af Anthony Bourdain.  These movies are perfect examples of why the 70s were incredible

Fun fact: Bradley Cooper was cast as young cool Bourdain before either were particularly famous.   There was a short lived show based on Kitchen Confidential on Fox in the early 00s that I believe you can find on Hulu

Boys in the Boat is a true throwback, felt like a film from a few decades ago, in the best way.  Chris Diamantopoulos was watching it with his family in my theater, which was pretty charming.  The cast was definitely the best part, Clooney did well assembling the ensemble.

That’s fun, Bill Burr was in my Zone of interest (if I didn’t mention that already).

Shoutout Control. Love that one.

I'm gonna continue watching Elliot Gould and Robert Altman movies for a while. California Split was amazing like the other Gould movies I mentioned. On prime now too

If Bergman's The Touch is in there, skip it.

The Holdovers was my favourite from last year, yet to see Zone of Interest.

Dream Scenario was good, too. Nice to get a few more subtle Cage performances now and then. Just to balance out all the Prisoners of Ghostland type of nonsense.

So Dream Scenario is actually good and not just some meta Nic Cage thing or some wild premise that doesn’t have legs?

Yes! Although I didn't mind The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, either.

Hour of the Wolf (1968) by Ingmar Bergman

The Shining is always my favorite horror film of all time but god damn this movie feels like a direct inspiration and predated version of the shining. 90 minutes, go watch it

Josh Hutcherson’s attempt at rolling around on a skateboard in The Beekeeper fit the movie’s absurd tone.  Definitely laughed out loud there, and in several other places.  It was pretty fun.

Poor Things: would love to see Lanthimos and Greta Gerwig interview one another about Barbie and this film.

Elliott Gould: The Silent Partner def had some parts in that were tonally jarring to me (in a good way) I was on the edge of my seat.  I’ll throw “Busting” into the list of his films. Ahead of its time for the buddy cop movie and a great chase scene.

Otherwise: I’d never seen Altered States until last week. Truly a mindfuck!

Something I’ve never noticed in a movie: in Poor Things is I could see the contact lenses in Emma Stones giant eyes.   Noticed them in the Curse as well afterwards

Finally saw La sociedad de la nieve.. I saw it two days ago and I am still marked by this story.. I knew the story, but not in the details.. What courage, what a life lesson. . Amazing what the human body can endure.. I felt like I was with them throughout the film, I can't imagine life in the cold like this.. Honestly, watch this film, incredible realism , direction which inserts us into the film.. Little masterpiece of the year for me !

I kinda didn't like the last third of the movie, but yeah it was better than I thought it would be...reminded me a bit of adaptation I guess.

Agreed. Unexpectedly my favorite movie of the past year. I really liked the themes of not knowing as much as you think you do and how history keeps rolling along.

As for good movies, watched this last week, still holds up

I saw this was on Netflix the other day and got excited but it’s edited to shit. Like, every fight scene has Chiba getting his hands near his opponent and then, CUT!, scene over. It’s comically bad in the final scene.

Don’t watch on Netflix.

Godzilla Minus One is just about deserving of the hype.   I have to admit, I just find it hard to see an animal get injured, even if it’s fucking Godzilla.   It didn’t bug me THAT much, but there were a few moments I was on the wrong side
