Alright, it's starting tonight. Predictions, shit talking and everything else that's part of the game, in here.
I got Czech beating Switzerland 2:1 and Portugal 2:0 against Turkey tonight.
i hope the czechs do good, i haven't really gotten excited about the tournament, tho. i didn't realise it's about to start until yesterday when my friend invited me to watch the netherlands-italy game next week.
Make this a thread of it's own Alan.
Until then my predictions for today are:
czech rep. 1 : 1 Switzerland
Portugal 2 : 1 Turkey
I'm pulling for Austria and Germany of course. If it's Austria vs. Germany I go with Austria. I dont really see how Austria could possibly make it through group stage, but I can always hope.

Yeah, same here. This is the closest any major tournament has ever been to Croatia and I can't go for the same reasons. But maybe it's for the best, since the national team fans are pretty much clowns compared to club fans.

I live in Berne, Switzerland one of the host cities. I am not a soccer fan at all, it's a fucking sport for pussies! But the dutch and italians are playing in my city, so there is going to be party everywhere! Looking forward to get drunk with some nice dutch ladies :)

I hate having to stay at home. Like you I don't even care about football that much but I can hear drunk tourists on the street, I can smell piss and beer. I wish I had started studying for the exams earlier, so I could go out and get drunk too. Zurich will never again have such a high potential for having fun. And what am I doing: Studying statistics. >:(

I'm giving my support to Italy, but I don't have full confidence in them. Portugal has a good team, but I'd like to see them get knocked out early just to shut up all the Portuguese people that are pissing me off. I'm not even the biggest soccer fan, but I still get told several times a day that Italy is shit and Portugal is going to win the Euro Cup. Apparently, any time Portugal loses or any time Italy wins, the game is rigged. Also, Portuguese is the best language in the universe because there are no homonyms.

Typical Croatian style, no motivation against weaker teams and then 100% against stronger ones. Almost always do both approaches backfire in tournaments.

Fuck I hated the austria game yesterday. First half was embarassing shit as usual, second half Harnik, Korkmaz, Kienast and Proedl all made a good game but still weren't able to beat Pletikosa (who was weak). I think they'd have deserved that one point. Now, since there's no way they're gonna beat Germany like this, I'm afraid they're practically out.
Germany game was good though, that one year of Premier League Ballack brings to the team makes such a huge difference.
My predictions for today:
Romania 1: 1 France
Holland 1:1 Italy

well technically, yeah, but there was a defender down behind the line, and the ref didnt blow it. and justifiably, too, it was his own goalie who struck him in the face.
the second, starting with bronckhorst's save, pass, and cross in, coupled with the birthday boy's karate kick all came together as a real damn beaut. so proud.

I'm pretty pissed I got sick yesterday and couldn't go to the fanzones today to watch austria germany. Well, turns out it was a mediocre game at best and austria again didn't score.
Now I'm just glad all the Cordoba '78 talk is finally over. It's just plain embarassing how austrians still grab on to that victory after 30 years.
Austria has a young and promising team though, I hope they'll qualify for the South Africa world cup in 2010.that'd be awesome.

I thought Spain would be the favourite. Italy barely made it through the first round.

Holland looks the most convincing in my eyes, but I'm backing Spain to the fullest. This does seem like it's setting them up for another poor showing though, they've got tough matches ahead. Portugal looks to have the easiest route to the finals if they keep up their form, which bums me out. I want Germany to fuck their shit.

Italy are doing it again... getting through doing nothing. Spain have played well but Russia and Sweden aren't anything special really, wait untill they play against a better team that wont let them have the ball that easily and they'll suffer a lot. Holland has been by far the best team until now.

It's too bad Italy is out, but they really did not deserve to win that game. Toni was disgusting, and the Spanish team was doing a lot of diving too. I guess I expect a certain amount of toughness from pro athletes. I certainly don't expect them to cry after a little bit of physical contact and falling down on grass. I'm sick of seeing that shit. That game yesterday was such a disappointment. When Semih scored the 2:2 I was actually quite happy, because I didn't want the germans to advance to the fnals like that. Of couse I'm still pulling for them but if they actually make it and become european champions, I want Lehmann to go directly into the cabins and never touch that trophy, because he's simply the worst goalkeeper of the tournament besides Nikopolidis or however you spell him. God I hate Lehmann.
