sauna youth has a great sound. their name reminds me of jacuzzi boys.
how do you guys come across new music? do you use any services like spotify or apple music? I mostly find it through books, message boards, friends, and the internet.
i find a lot through spotify. the weekly recommendation playlist has lead me to a lot of cool stuff. some weeks are total duds though. i like a lot of different music, but the majority of the time i stick to similar sounding stuff, so i get a lot of repeat recommendations.
reddit is pretty good too. i follow the indieheads sub for new music and ive found some great stuff on there. that sub is broad enough that it gets enough people uploading and discussing the music which definitely plays into what i click on. i always wait for the new music friday thread to come up and see if there is anything i need to check out. thats how i found sauna youth. sometimes the only description you get is one or two genre categories, so you gotta be a bit adventurous. sometimes it pays off, but a lot of the time i listen to a bunch of bands that are shit.
sometimes i just explore on my own. there theres a new band i like, ill check out other bands on their label or whatever bands are related on bandcamp. i feel like i definitely go in spirts of listening to new stuff and when weeding through shitty bands gets tiring, ill jump back to what i know i like for a while.
whoever posted that mr. pharmacist show on mixcloud deserves a few more gnars because i found a whole bunch of shit from that. lotta old 60s stuff and weird french shit that ive never heard, mixed with tons of classics that love. i wish he kept the show going or there was a similar podcast right now.
skate videos used to be a major music discovery outlet for me, but it seems like the days of good music in videos is long gone.
i feel like im the only person i know who's into music though. none of my friends and family care enough to actively look for new stuff, be it new, or just something they've just never heard.
