There's no way Sole Tech is around much longer.

I never see eS or Etnies in the wild. See barely any Emerica. Sucks, they were so big in my formative years- especially eS and Emerica. Those teams (eS - Koston,McCrank,Ladd,Penny,Saari,P Rod, Rodrigo TX ; Emerica - Reynolds, Kirchart, Templeton, Herman, Spanky, Suski, Townend, Ellington) were so stacked and the videos (Menikmati and This is Skateboarding) were heavy. I loved Accels back in the day, and the Reynolds series has been legendary.

Jerry Hsu's departure is just another sign of the impending doom.

I’m a fan of his but this dude he rested on his laurels and/or over estimated his worth. I’m not happy he lost a big chunk of his income but the bottom line is if you don’t do put out the work, you quit a major sponsor like Chocolate, and your shoe doesn’t sell, they don’t need you.

His shoe sold well and emerica fucked it, dude put out multiple basically only switch parts and did one of the gnarliest tricks on a rail ever and leaving the crailtap camp is a good move for anyone on there. Fuck are you talking about . Id go as far as to say the hsu was one of the most iconic shoes emerica had next to the Reynolds 3 to my generation of skaters. If emerica wants to shoot them selves in the foot and drop him and keep that Neanderthal 2006 flow level kid Zach Allen all I have to say is die slow, you deserve it.

(I know I’ll get hate for this opinion but whatever.) Love Jerry, but some of his points here are ridiculous and I don’t know if I blame Emerica honestly. “Oh they didn’t like how I don’t want to film video parts or really promote anything anymore” yeah no shit dude. What did he think he got paid for? To just sit around?  At the end of the day they’re a skateboarding COMPANY, and they’re in the business to make money, and if you’re sending this guy checks every month who is doing nothing to grow your brand, you’re going to consider cutting ties. When he talks about how they brought an outside source to audit, that probably is what happened. The person probably looked at their business model and asked them “why are you paying this guy thousands of dollars every year to do nothing?” And “oh he’s a legend” isn’t a very good reason when things are getting dicey.
Jerry IS a legend and for sure deserves mass amounts of respect, but I’ve never gotten this wack belief in skateboarding that companies are “fucked ” or in the wrong somehow when they cut guys who are contributing essentially nothing to their business other than purely their name.

Jerry seemed pretty realistic about the situation himself.  He even admitted that he didn't do "as much" for the company but it also seemed like Emerica didn't really ask him to do a whole lot and he was doing the bare minimum to fulfill his obligations.  Seems like he was pissed at first because it came so suddenly.

But either way, from a business standpoint, cutting Jerry from the team will save the company money without sacrificing much off sales.

I don't know about that, Jerry with his Sci.fy stuff being sold at Supreme/in supreme video, 150K instagram followers, his art stuff etc, I'm surprised they dropped him because he seems like one of the guys that had a decent reach outside of just skating.

Sole Tech had its run. Nike and Adidas came in and capitalized on Sole Tech's mistakes and it doesn't appear that they're ever going to recover. Sole Tech appears to be resistant to change, the top brass doesn't seem to take advice very well, and their image is stuck in the early 2000s. Also, they over-rely on distributors and don't know what is going on abroad.

I don't understand why they didn't start a new brand with a younger dude a long time ago. Instead of letting Don Brown restart eS with Walker Ryan, Ryan Lay, etc. on the team, why not encourage Walker or Ryan to come up with something new and fun? It is crazy how many people have been part of the Sole Tech camp that they didn't support well enough. (Pontus and Chris Milic are the first to come to my mind.)

As for Jerry, I think the dude deserves some support on the way out (if things are winding down for him). Hopefully, he can pull things off with his own company or transition into photography. Shit, I still back the idea of union that provides some transition services to dudes on their way out of a skate career.

Jerry was thriving during the THPS boom of the early 2000's and has had many pro shoes. If he needs a union to transition out of making good money for 15 odd years while he settles into adult life then you might wanna set up a union to help him tie his shoelaces each morning.

pro skaters either make great money or shit money and for most the run ends in their late 20's to mid 30's. Many everyday skaters will work bar jobs or at skate shops to avoid responsibility so they can skate and live a carefree lifestyle into their late twenties before realising its time to get their shit together and spend some solid time working their way up the ladder, a few rungs below their co-workers.

At least a pro of Jerrys nature can fall back on his Vice hook ups and his rep/name. Fuck, he already began the phase out himself the last 5 or so years with his photography and L.A. hipster connects.

It sounds like they dropped him with no prior notice or warning, which isn't right because he put in a lot of work with Emerica and he really is one of the defining pros of nearly the past two decades. And as mentioned, his Made part wasn't even that long ago. It's depressing that him and Jeremy Wray and others have done so much and yet don't get the treatment they deserve.

Was intriguing how Jerry said his friends ask him to sell stuff at Supreme, and he'll have tricks in Blessed, and then later on he says the vibe of Supreme is gross. But he's 36, he should say exactly what's on his mind.

Also I like this podcast, it's intelligent.
