A Euro line producer has confirmed, that during the filming of Braveheart, a co-actor walked up to Mel Gibson and said "permission to act chief?"
Permission was granted.

I would like to remind all those throwing comparisons for Ty Evans around in such a disrespectful manner that

Ty Evans does what Ty Evans does because Ty Evans is... Ty Evans

Really enjoying this thread.

The African Queen. Legend being Bogey was the only one not to get dysentery because he only drank whiskey during the entire shoot.

Oh I was confused by the method acting part.  I assumed they were thinking of Apocalypse Now by mistake.

AQ is a great movie.  Inspired the Jungle Cruise ride at Disneyland

Coppola has openly said that he looked at apocalypse now as his African queen, and tried to emulate Huston and his method of forcing the actors into the Bush to rough it, but Coppola was nowhere near as slick as Huston and thus we got the legendary nightmare of a shoot that Apocalypse Now became.

^ Ah, someone who makes them go method in the jungles like Coppola... now it all makes sense.

As to John Huston of Asphalt Jungle fame: Josh Stewart

Wannabe early Martin Scorcese - Jim Greco

Actual early Martin Scorcese - Dan Wolfe

Ty Evans - James Cameron
Greg Hunt - Martin Scorsese
Josh Stewart - Spike Lee
William Strobeck - Andy Warhol (obvious influence)
Jacob Harris - Jean Cocteau
Jim Greco - John Cassavettes
John Wilson - Safdie Brothers
I like this one. Any thoughts on who would be Wong Kar Wai?

No one.  Hah.  It’s a little funny to be comparing camera operating documentarians to story telling directors as opposed to film cinemagraphers (but I get it bc they’re known names and auteur theory is that prevalent even in its latency), but I feel with WKW you’d be referencing Christopher Doyle’s contributions when trying to find a comparison since no one has made a skateboard video with man/woman romance as it’s main focus.

We need to bring Joe Castrucci into this thread, and it's about fucking time btw!

I've got a couple of ideas

Jean-Pierre Jeunet (admitted I've only seen Amélie and Delicatessen), but he's too sweet
Wes Anderson, but he's too quirky and sweet
Jim Jarmush, but he's too dystopian
Coen Brothers?

Maybe Lars Von Trier?

I've got a hard time placing him somewhere I feel really do just to his craft, vision and sense for detail but without a misplaced side note.

I think Lars is my best bet, but I'd love too see some more proposals - I might have a new favorite movie director coming my way, if one of you guys nail it.

I would say the best candidate for Wes Anderson is Colin Kennedy - Torey Pudwill is his Owen Wilson and Daewon is his Bill Murray.

Beagle - John Waters (fixation and embrace of the oddities of the human race)

Mandible Claw/Colin Read - Michel Gondry (just basing off of Spirit Quest and their in-camera trickery)

Ternasky - Francis Ford Coppola (made some genuine masterpieces but flamed out too early in their career for pushing things too much)

I’m feeling like a Jon Miner is a Soderbergh and a Greg Hunt is like a Mike Nichols type.  They’re born skaters’ filmers/actors’ directors  but it doesn’t feel fully sussed out

French Fred - Roman Polanski (euros who came over and revolutionized shit but returned back to Europe - for very different reasons)
[close]

Was gonna say Scorsese for him because of the freneticism coupled with his ability to tell a story, with a bit of Woody with his quirky neurosis, but I like the FFC comparison you made.

No Coen bros. anywhere?

O`shea brothers? or those are the Wachowski?

Are you sure he isn’t Scorsese and Torey and Daewon are his DiCaprio and DeNiro?

He did a whole video aping Monty Python animations.  Just call him Terry Gilliam and move on

to add to the (very nice) Safdies/Johnny Wilson connection...
while not as prolific, Naquan Rollings' 2020 run of edits, especially the early ones mirror the reflections of the times. While not all of them mirror the claustrophobic nature of a Safdies film, this one especially kinda nails how summertime felt, especially in a big city. Anxiety-ridden with hidden moments of relief.

I think it’s more based on my personal opinion of both of them. I liked Wes Anderson’s films at first growing up and thought his reuse of the same actors was endearing. And then as more movies came out it just got more and more boring, Wes never changed his approach and the movies just became monotonous. That inability to actually take risks and actually try playing around with different approaches to making a movie just bored me to the core. And that’s why I think of him as fitting well with Colin Kennedy. I liked DVS skate more but as time went on he never changed much, now he is still filming with Torey and Daewon and the hill he’s chosen to die on is just distant, rolling long lens everything. It’s so unbelievably boring.

A director using a repertory of actors is hardly a quirk of Wes Anderson, hence the Scorsese comparison (9 DeNiro starrers, 5 Leo ones w/ 3 in development) .  I think if you asked anyone what a Wes Anderson film looked like that they’d say “oh isn’t he the guy who re-uses actors he likes to work with?” Particularly when one of the two you cited (Wilson) was his writing partner on his first 3 films and a childhood friend.   Do you wish Beagle would branch out and film someone not in the Baker/Shake Junt camp?  Wes Anderson is probably one of the few actual auteurs in cinema where his sensibility and style permeates every department and stands out in every frame and I’ll brook no comparison of him to some medium talent like Colin Kennedy.

I don't think this thread was meant to be so serious.
