Best trucks for an 8.38?
« on: June 16, 2020, 08:00:00 PM »
I'm thinking about moving up from 8.25 to 8.38. Currently rocking Thunder 148 titanium lights and loving them. Do you guys think 149s are better suited for an 8.38? Does it matter? Let me hear your opinions.

Depends on the 8.38. A full 8.38 from Real works well with 149's, but I've had 148's on there too (Thunders). Mostly I just go with 148's because I don't like my wheels to be completely even with the edge of the board.

I think that 8.5” trucks on a 8.38” deck are nice.
From center of board a 8.38” is only .065” bigger on each side than a 8.25” so it’s probably not that big of a deal

148 range is 8.12”-8.38”
149 range is 8.38”-8.62

I use a quarter inch(.25”)rule you can overhang or underhand by a quarter inch and you are all good. Wheels can also influence this.

Ok

I wouldn’t buy new trucks. You could use more speed rings (is that what the axle washers are called? Why?) to push the wheels out further if you wanted. I’ve seen people go up to 8.75” trucks on 8.38”, but 8.5” trucks seem to be the most popular. I bought an 8.38 semi recently and the shop recommended 148s, I bought 149s, wish I bought 148s.

Using more than two washers per wheel is a thing? Sounds wonky

Sure, when you just need a slight adjustment. I don't wanna go up from ~8.25 trucks, but like right now, I happen to have a 8.38 board, which will work fine for my 144 indys, but I wanna pair it with my theeves for a couple sessions first, which are slightly narrower, a bit too much in my opinion, so a couple extra washers take care of that. I wouldn't put more than three though.

Mini Logo 8.38 if you're interested in trying low trucks. Despite looking a little goofy they're quite nice to skate.

Ok after further thought on the subject I'm going to amend my answer.

If you want to mellow out a steep deck or just enjoy the more responsive feel of a low truck then mini logo.

If you want a high truck because you still possess spry young legs and want to pop over dumpsters or something then Venture 5.8. The caveat here is that if you're going to skate a longer wheelbase (14.38-14.5 range) or just want to experience near death situations on a regular basis then you can't beat Ace 44s.

I prefer 8.5 trucks on an 8.38, but next time I get trucks I'll probably get 8.25s because I like decks from 8.1 - 8.4

If you like 148s you'll be just fine sticking to them. Could always pad the inside with washers to push the wheels out a bit more.

I personally like 8.5 trucks on 8.25-8.38 which is what I've been skating lately. Haven't tried 8.25 trucks, its probably not that different but I came from skating 8.5s and have skated 8.5 trucks for the past 5 years and dont see any reason to go down.

word, i've noticed it fucks up the way my flips work. i tried 149s on my 838 and it sucked hard. great turning but my flips would always over/under rotate until i got a pair of thunder 148s
even the steven

5.8 if you're thinking to step up in the future. If not 5.6 could do the trick too.

Mini Logo 8.38 if you're interested in trying low trucks. Despite looking a little goofy they're quite nice to skate.

Skating some 8.3 ML (kruxk pins, stock bushings) right now on my 8.3 with 50mm wheels.

They're much better than anyone [this forum] gives them credit for....especially given the lack of wide, and low trucks (except ACE of course). They turn, they are low and they are light (especially with Krux pins).

8.25" or 8.5" both work really well; in my case I prefer ACE/ML or 144/148s sizing. as I've started to prefer trucks narrower than the board of late.

I recently went down from a 8.5 to 8.38 and have been using 149's, which I find work well.

aluminum ATG are great too for a non-maglight option
