Hi Slap,
are there any figures published about environmental impact of manufacturing skateboarding hard goods? I would figure smelting and casting aluminum is at least very energy-intensive. It feels strange that there is no recycling of old trucks in place - grinding through to axle still leaves vast of the material intact - re-smelting should be possible, if not economically viable.
-
This is something I’ve been thinking about quite a bit lately. Also other environmental impacts of skateboarding.
Worn out trucks you could simply recycle with other metals. I don’t really see a problem there.
But what about decks? What’s the glue made of? Are the dyes and screen prints environmentally friendly? Are decks biodegradable?
And then shoes. Shoes are mostly still ok when they’re done for skating. Sole or side blows out and they’re done. Then you just throw them in the trash and none of it gets recycled. That’s not good. How would you recycle shoes though, I don’t know but keeping on doing it like this is not sustainable. Also most of the rubbers in shoes are synthetic from my understanding. Do the shoes release microplastics when wearing down or is the synthetic rubber something that is more biodegradable? What about synthetic shoes? Microplastics? What are the environmental impacts of suede, leather, synthetic and canvas shoes compared to each other?
Wheels are made of polyurethane and they wear down a whole bunch releasing microplastics all the time. How big of an issue is polyurethane microplastic? I don’t know but I’d be interested in learning more about it. Also are urethane wheels made of fossil sources? If so, I do think we need to find a non-fossil alternative as we can’t keep on pumping oil from the ground and pretend it’s all good.
Sorry for highjacking a bit but this is something I’ve wanted to make a thread about for quite a while.
-
I've been hounding the locals to compile grip tape scraps for years now. They keep calling me a "koouuk" or something idk
Think ov how many boards could be gripped all because of me
-
There are so many problems with the ‘recycling’ route that I don’t see it as feasible.
Unless it is WAY cheaper to melt down old wheels and trucks, the profit margin capitalism demands will not allow it.
If we lived in a sane world that prioritized minimum environmental damage, skateboards would probably look a fair bit different.
For one, everything that couldn’t be eventually composted would be made to last as long as possible, and then able to disassemble into separate recyclable parts. Trucks would have axles that could be removed at the end of their life, shoes would be designed for their next life as material for something else (the book Cradle to Cradle talks about this in depth).
But it’s not going to happen in this economy. I think the next best thing is to remove the overly wasteful throwaway culture skating has developed.
Decks are designed to break after a relatively short time. Shoes are designed to have a moderate lifespan because of our collective bias for griptape. And so many people on here love that wastefulness. Getting a ‘fresh deck’ and ‘new kicks’ every month or two.
It’s kinda ridiculous. Even though they might currently employ chemicals and solvents that are not great for the environment (and most wood glues are not either, for that matter), Powell has the right idea making decks that last 2-3x as long as a regular deck.
Helping get people away from that ‘planned obsolescence’ and ‘throwaway’ culture with more durable products and say, grip tape that performs well yet doesn’t destroy shoes are big two areas where waste could be reduced.

No hijacking happened, just was too lazy to write more - been thinking same things lately. Instead, thanks for filling in :)

Can't deny it - setting up a new deck changes at least the subjective feeling of performance. No idea how much of that is about marketing mumbo jumbo that has been running wild in the skateboarding industry and culture as long as I can remember. Rationally considered it is harmful consumerism par excellence, unfortunately.
Does any skateboard company even mention environmental footprint? Only one I know of that has some stance in the matter is Jeremie Daclin's Film, sporting Yvon Chouinard's "1% for the Planet". I'd hope to see more of that.

I think about this a lot and would like to do more about it. I always hope someone else can get more life out of my old stuff like boards and wheels.
Habitat shoes were made out of water-based glues. I still have a few pairs. Not sure if any other shoe companies do this now, though.

I heard a rumor about the owner from someone who worked in the company around 2011 and that he didn’t pay skaters and stole a lot of their money and dude is somewhat blacklisted...I used to hype Satori shit and dude set me straight with a few stories. I think I-path was the first to make hemp and soles from recycled tires

Skateboarding is just a constant buying/destroying/dumping cycle. It really bums me out that it's like that, but not skating would bum me out even more.
I try to make up for it with everything else I do in my life. Making conscious decisions about my work, my buying habits, what I eat, how long my showers are, how often I run the a/c in my apt, etc.
But skateboarding will always be wasteful and destructive. Skate and Destroy as they say. Destroy the earth.
-
Remember when Lakai made shoes from recycled old skate shoes for a minute? That was a great idea

This is why it would be interesting to know actual footprint figures - for scaling. It is possible that all recycled materials in a skateboard are in vain once you decide to drive alone to sesh that cool DIY in another town.
-
With every board manufactured the environment gets a little radder.
-
The only solace I take is that it’s somewhat less wasteful than surfing or snowboarding. I mean, probably.
This has also been on my mind for a long time.
The best I can do is give old decks to people who want to repurpose them for shelves or something.
Shoes can sometimes be dropped off at a Nike store where they shred them into filler for AstroTurf. Probably a net zero at best but it’s something. The classic trade with a different stance skater is also something.
Trucks, wheels and bearings are tougher, try to just skate them as long as absolutely possible. Repair before replace if possible. Trucks could be reused for coat hangers. Shit I don’t know, the worlds going up in flames.

ive seen people do all sorta shit with old trucks, i personally have an old thunder that i use to hang my keys off

This is always in the back of my mind. I love skating but have always despised being part of a wasteful consumer culture but it is what it is. It feels weird not knowing where my wood comes from and whether it's the product of some nasty deforestation or not. It's cool that more people are thinking about this stuff and taking the environment into consideration. It's so odd that humanity has reached a point where we have become so self absorbed and unashamedly contributing to the woes of the natural world.

Skateboarding Enviromental Impact Report : NOT FUCKING GOOD AT ALL.

Waste and pollution on personal level is one thing, like leaving your old bolts/boards other thrash at spots and parks.
Adjusting the manufacturing environmental impact is another.
I think both could be changed/improved by demanding better information and guidance from companies. Remember that we're talking about marketing power that once got us to focus our boards because it was "cool".
-
I've been hounding the locals to compile grip tape scraps for years now. They keep calling me a "koouuk" or something idk

I do this with all my grip. After 6 or so you can mostly grip a new deck if you get creative. If you do it make sure to post it in the setup thread so you can trigger people.
As far as recycling other stuff, anything that still has useful life left in it i donate. My city has a nonprofit called Trash to Thrash that hosts events to teach kids to skate and sends them home with a board, and it seems like other charities doing something similar are becoming more common. Or you can take the classic route and just give it to a kid at the skate park. With shoes/clothes I usually give them to the homeless dudes in my area. They'll take literally anything made of metal too so they can scrap it.
But yeah, just throwing stuff away is lame. I did junk removal /hauling for years and it's insane how wasteful our culture is. Sometimes it takes a little bit of work but you can usually find someone who can use your old stuff one way or another if you look around.

Skateboarding Enviromental Impact Report : NOT FUCKING GOOD AT ALL.
this
Most skateboarding hardware are made of composite materials (decks / shoes / bearings), recycling these is a pain in the ass considering you have first to separate glue from wood or leather from rubber etc.
The challenge of recycling things is not about just wanting to do it. It's about collection and sorting. And it raises the economical aspect.
Reuse is an option, recycling is not
it's different for trucks but they still are composite materials (the axle is not the same material as the hanger for instance). But the separation is way easier for metals and i'm pretty sure something can be done with trucks recycling.
-
Don't you guys have metal recycling bins where you live? I wouldn't think twice throwing a set of broken trucks in the metal recycle bin here in Finland. 😮
-

In the US it depends on where you live. Some places it's mandatory, some places it's voluntary, and some places have no recycling programs. Now that we can't just send our trash to China some places have done away with residential recycling pick up since it costs more. It's actually a big problem that a lot of people are unaware of. And if course since this is 'Murica it's more important to make money than it is to..ya know, actually have a habitable planet for future generations.
We do have scrap metal yards that will pay you for it, then sell it to the processers that melt it down and reuse it. You can actually make some nice side cash doing that if you're willing to go around on garbage day and collect stuff from the curb and sort it. I don't know what prices are like now but a few years ago a truck load of unsorted shred metal would get you a hundred bucks or so.
-

Yea I'm going to have to agree. Even brand new wheels/trucks/bearings will usually have that warning. Something like "this product according to the state of California is known to contain cancer causing chemicals".

That's wild. Recycling metals is relatively simple and with aluminium for example making something from recycled aluminium requires only a small fraction of the energy compared to making stuff from mined bauxite. I can understand economy dictating a lot of these things even if I don't agree with it but recycling metals and especially aluminium is also economically feasible.
-
Yeah unfortunately it just goes to show how much of the last recycling revolution was economically inspired rather than born of genuine concern for the planet. Nowadays with oil prices dropping its actually cheaper to manufacture virgin plastics than it is to recycle it, which is another reason why it's becoming more common for western countries to bury or burn their trash. Metal recycling is still profitable but not so much so that it offsets the cost of collecting and sorting it in some places so even that's disappearing.

This seems like one way to reuse old decks. Might have to do some prep work with them but in addition to some cheap parts from the hardware store, they're at least not just ending up in the ground.

aside from giving away spares to locals or foundations like skatepal etc, can also redecorate them if you're an arty character, create a shelf as seen above, could prolly create a chair or some garden stool/bench kinda thing, seen em turned into jewellery or go full jimmy boyes and make a teepee

These dudes are doing cool stuff. I've been wanting to try this. Once I have saved up enough broken decks.

There's hundreds of ways to reuse old decks, dudes make record adapters to play 45s out of old decks, one guy makes handles for suicide clutches on choppers, shelving etc. Fucking go to a woodshop and have em chop it down to dust and use it to clean up spills idk.
Grind your trucks down to the fucking axle if they don't snap. Give em to someone that casts their own shit if you can't find a recycling dump.
We ride toxic shit,CA prop 65 life.

How about wax? Was just thinking of it as I just made a new batch from a bunch of candles. Skate wax is mostly paraffin, isn't it? Paraffin is 100% fossil based. Anyone has any idea how soy wax slides? I don't think I've ever come across soy wax but they apparently make a whole bunch of candles from the stuff and it isn't as hard as stearin which is way too brittle for skate wax. 🤔
-
Got curious about soy wax, looks like there’s someone selling soy based skate wax already:
https://magictoast.com/products/skateboarding-soy-eco-magical-go-go-skate-wax
I’ve never bought premade skate wax, should be able to get soy wax from an arts and crafts store though, could be a fun thing to try.
-
I actually started using boards that are fully focused to make new wedding rings for myself or giant rings to hang stuff from. Any board that isn't focused I'll use for a shelf or save it and scrap some boards together for my son to mess with, but I still find myself just tossing a lot of stuff out.
I'm not like Bachinsky or anything, but that would be sick to learn how to do that crazy woodwork.
-
I give my old decks to kids at the skatepark and they’re always stoked. I set up a new one every 6 weeks or so.
Trucks I never change until I have to and they last forever.
Wheels last forever, too. I rotate them and keep my bearings clean and lubed.
I leave trucks and wheels at the park as well.
I reuse my mounting hardware - never understood those who need a fresh set every time.
Shoes are the things that get me down. Canvas shoes get wrecked within a few sessions so I use suede and it’s wild throwing away animal skin every month or so instead of using them for the long term like my walking shoes.

There was wheels that were “green” they might have been made from olive oil or something like that.
I might be making some of that up. Maybe it was all a dream

The individual level consumer solutions presented in this thread are useful (and kind of common sense too), but I still wonder how can it be that ecological values are basically non-existent in mainstream skate product marketing. It sounds like a no-brainer to at least try to market with environment-friendly processes, renewable energy use etc.

skateboarding is kinda like the pinnacle of capitalism. And capitalism is a lot about generating thrash and making money out of it. The more people consume, the more they generate thrash, the more collecting and recycling companies make money. Skateboard products are already expensive. making it eco-friendly would unfortunately make skateboarding even more expensive.
Some brands plant trees when you buy shoes, others make vegan shoes (but should we use animal skins or plastics ? what's worse ?), but it's always about compromises (cost effectiveness primarily).
In the end, skateboarding is mainly for teenagers and they don't care about that. it's not a marketing leverage. Sometimes parents of these teenagers are happy to hear that boards aren't coming from China... but they don't really care as a whole.
Retail prices are the main concern
And brands want you to skate & DESTROY your own stuff and buy new stuff

You used to read word up magazine? Salt n Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine?
I’ve recently resorted to art projects from old decks. Again not a solution, but it’s something.

Satori vegetable oil wheels, but they were awful. They turned to octagons just from riding down the street, and they were real slick. It's a shame no one has tried to work on an alternative that works because making skate wheels is extremely toxic, and they aren't very biodegradable

I'm not going to launch the vegan debate, but comparing an animal life to plastic production is kinda gross to me.
Both have a high environmental impact, but only one is taking the life of an animal for you to do tricks on your skateboard.
I know this is a complex topic, but in my opinion plants are the only durable and ethical solution. I'm personally skating canvas shoes and succeed to make them last 2 months or so. I know some brands are making plant-based suede from ananas and so, but I guess it cost more than killing animals in China and make shoes out of their skin...
-
well you actually launched it, i was just questionning

Before the vegans pile on Balargue, I want to give him a chance to think through the ramifications of what he said, what he is implying, and what that means for how food is produced.
Bal, a couple starter questions
-Do plants feel ‘pain’, and thusly ‘suffer’?
-Is their ‘suffering comparable to animal and human suffering?
-Are you actually concerned with suffering? And reducing it?
-
Plants have feelings, oh fuck here we go...
-
Ahah, the good old "plants have feelings too".
I thought everybody now knows that eating meat "kills" way more plants than eating plants.
And sorry guys, but if you really feel concerned by your environmental impact you cannot avoid the meat/leather/milk topic.

But another thing to consider is how small skateboarding is. Even if every skater uses sustainable materials and produces no harm to the environment, that is a small fraction of the world's population. We're only going to save the planet if non skaters start using more sustainable products in their everyday lives.
Also, plants do not have feelings, and cannot feel pain, as they lack a central nervous system.

Agreed, these are not cars, but if you’re the kind of person who does their individual part for the environment, which also does nothing in the big picture, then you would probably also like to see the goods you consume making an effort as well. Small bites to eat an elephant.
And I have also previously read about plants being able to feel a sort of pain, though not one analogous to what humans experience.

I don’t see anyone being environmentally conscious anywhere. Skate world and every other industry create a lot of waste, average American throws away like 4-6 lbs of garbage a day.
Gotta come up with an answer and I don’t believe technology with solve anything but more waste.
Gotta go Amish or something.
Doomsday prepping skategoods for the dark ages and Ive made some pretty bushings out of very hard woods, I keep 30 sets of bushings vacuum sealed in a freezer along with a few old boxes I got from spitfire. I’ve got enough to make 5 completes and numerous decks vacuum sealed in my walk in freezer. I just pulled out a toy machine Donny barley smoker deck and it still had the freshest pop. Been doing this for over 25 years. Skateboarding will never die

Loosely related: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1987199519/rens-the-totally-waterproof-sneaker-made-from-coffee
This is a nice example of material stream waste elimination - only 2% of a coffee bean ends up in the cup, rest is full of useful compounds and had gone to landfill in worst case so far.
I wonder what's the waste ratio in maple, urethane or aluminum alloys in trucks. Or skate shoes.

BBS makes solid boards and I think skating a stronger board that might last a bit longer is a smart move sustainability wise. But I'd be really skeptical of anything coming from the company directly(ie public relations). The fact they are manufacturing in Mexico should tell you something about their environmental footprint.
-
I wonder what the wages are for those people working the BBS woodshop

That’s why something like a flight deck may be the most ecological and ethical decision.
Lib Tech is also made in the US (by skaters) and they have an amazing recycling/mulching program.

The new Lovenskate Alex Hallford pro model looks to be sold in a paper bag, not shrink wrap. So that's a start.
I remember hearing vulc shoes were appalling for the environment because of the high temperature used to bake them.
I think it's a shame that there aren't any refresh programs for the obvious hardwoods (trucks, wheels, bearings) as most of the material is intact when the item is "done"

Just came across this video that shows how BBS makes their boards. They recycle a ton of material and use environment friendly techniques wherever they can.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3VLKzOGD3I
That actually made me feel a lot better.
Interesting video, but "We replaced the workers with machines to save the workers' wrists" is a work of spectacular genius.
Yes. What usually happens is that a company is more likely to buy a machine if the manual work it replaces is more expensive. Unfortunately what usually happens is that the work, which requieres more skill is usually targeted first for automation, because those workers are usually more expensive. It seems that might have happened here.

Everything we use as skaters has a negative environmental impact. However, unlike practically every mainstream culture, skaters have always celebrated using stuff 'til it's completely thrashed. Its so deeply ingrained in our heads that stuff like grinding through the axle, ollie holes in shoes, etc. that we take it mostly for granted. Every time I set p a new deck, which I don't technically need since I never actually break boards I feel guilty, and ask myself if I can skate what I have a little longer. We make fun of mall completes, since we know every real skater is always cobbling together a bunch of worn gear. There's a lot to learn from us. Even the act of street skating is a re-use vs. build to suit ethos.

Now THAT’s an interesting thought. Cities really could save a lot of money on a skatepark if they just allowed public spaces to be multi-use. Architects in Norway actually designed their opera house with skateboarding in mind, using materials to curate usage (I.e. rougher ground where the sound would be echoey)

Something similar happened with the "cult" park in Seoul. It used to be strictly a park but all the marble attracted skaters. The city eventually allowed skaters to use it freely. I wish the city where I lived did something like this with some of the public parks downtown.

Yes, that is an interesting idea. I generally agree with you. However how long you skate your boards and shoes for most people also depends on how much money you have. I stayed in Bogotá, Colombia for a few months and skated one park alot and I was surprised how long they used their set-ups.
They would trade and sell old beat-up skateboard parts all the time. What was surprising to me was that decks and trucks which in Germany would have long been thrown away still were worth quite a bit of money.
I gave a guy a fairly good used deck, because he skated really well on a deck with literally 2 inches of nose and tail. I have never seen anyone so happy over such a small gift. Three months later another kid was skating my used deck and its tail was about 2 inches long. He had skated the deck for two months until he won a new deck in a contest and he gave my deck to a friend of his. His friend skated it for a few sessions and sold it to a kid for ten dollars. Most skateboard parts were traded like that until they were completely destroyed.
I like your idea that street skating is re-using parts of the city. I actually think street skateboarding is using shit that other people only look and have no use for at all. The city environment is an artificial environment to begin with. Skating is definitely way better for nature than snowboarding for example, which takes place in a more natural environment.

Isn’t that kind of wishful thinking though? I get wearing shit to the ground may seem better than buying something and using/wearing it once then never again, but people buy clothes/shoes (that are NOT fast fashion brands) and wear them down that don’t skate and that probably lasts untold times longer than skaters shoes.
I get the idea though, I feel shitty about setting up a new board if it’s not broken but feeling off when your skating an old soggy board can be so infuriating too.
Skating is a pretty wasteful hobby by nature so you can market things however you want, but at the end of the day it’s a hobby that thrives on shit breaking, toxic chemicals, and probably subpar working conditions and wages at best.

Actually I was wondering about the recycled wheels. Satori? correct me if I'm wrong, but say if they melt down those wheels to use the urethane, wouldn't that mess with their urethane formula? I don't really understand that, like if they took other wheels urethane and mixed them, like isn't that just like a franken wheel? Can someone explain it to me? Like what if they had a 99d wheel and a 101d wheel mixed, what would that be?

You're right, it's all toxic junk. At this point in our global economic culture, I think using stuff til it falls apart, and for that matter being deeply invested in the things you buy vs. buying junk because it's cheap and /or easy. For instance, I drive an old car vs. a new Prius or something because the lifetime environment impact of using stuff you all ready have, or get secondhand is much lighter than buying something that's brand new and recycled for instance. I'd bet anything that the lifetime environmental impact of driving a secondhand Civic is a lot lighter than a Tesla.

I agree, I mean everything from my car to clothes to furniture/house stuff is used because I happen to like it, plus it’s a lot cheaper too. Besides like toiletries, skate stuff is some of the few items I buy exclusively new.
My argument is more or less this: yeah the impact is shitty just like everything else. Be aware of it and think about it when you buy stuff and evaluate things being sold to you. The impact you have on any environmental issues from personal lifestyle changes is minor compared to the impact these companies, not skating specifically but skate industry included, have on the environment.
This is coming from someone who sat through years of environmental classes that railed on personal lifestyle changes rather than focusing energy on rampant capitalist business practices

Not to down play this topic because I don’t want to say it’s not important. My question is what percentage of the world’s population actually skates or skates enough to need a new deck every few weeks, trucks every few months? Total skaters in the world has to be something like 0.000001% So as a whole I don’t believe the skateboarding industry makes that big of an environmental impact. If it bothers you though do your part. There are recycling centers in most areas and I’m sure there’s a way to recycle even shoes.

True, industry and agriculture make up a vast majority of contributions to environmental damage (global water consumption for example on a private scale only makes up 8% of fresh water usage).
That said, much like recycling one can or bottle doesn’t make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things, collective efforts would have a dramatic impact on reducing environmental impact.
No our relatively small industry doesn’t have as big of an impact as automobile manufacturers, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to do our part.
Moreover, many American cities still don’t have properly structured recycling programs, and even ones that do may have their recycling going to China to be dumped in the ocean anyway. Shoe recycling programs are few and far between (I’ve looked into it) and even something like Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program is limited in both what is accepted and drop-off locations.
Long winded, but my point is you eat an elephant one bite at a time but many still need utensils and it’s gotta get done while there’s a brush fire behind you.

I fully agree with HyenaChaser here! It is not a reason to just sit back and not do anything if there are bigger problems out there. We all must do our part and adapt on whatever area it is we are doing environmentally harmful things at.

Skateboard decks have taken over furniture as the leading cause of the maple deforestation. I'll definitely say I had a part in being wasteful growing up skateboarding, cycling through boards even though they still had life in them and even focusing a few because I was an angsty teenager.
Maybe the industry, like the rest of the world is due for a pivot. Industry and enterprise is shifting towards a state of hyper personalization with data and AI guiding how companies are designing their products. Production runs are getting shorter as trends cycle at a faster rate than before.
Instead of mass producing boards, boards can be made (maybe printed?) in shorter runs that fit your style of skating, matching your exact size specifications and graphic, so you don't have to cycle through 10 boards just to find the 1 that you like. Boards that are designed to last longer, stay stiff and don't razor tail as quickly. Lots of brands have fiber inserts which are great for breakage, but most skaters are likely to wear their nose / tails down faster than they are to snap a board. It would really shift power in the industry away from companies / distributors to the woodshops who can cater directly to the consumer without the brand markup too. Just speaking hyperbole during my lunch break.
I for one would be happy to be able to consistently get the shape I wanted every time, so I would have to go through gear madness with every tweak to my setup.
Recycling and reusing is great, but reducing is another key part of conservation that we overlook. There's probably a lot more we as skateboarders can do outside of skateboarding in our daily life that will have a greater impact n the environment than recycling / reusing our old gear.

That’s a good point.
Couldn’t wheels come in recycled cardboard or something?
I really didn’t need a Thunder keychain with my trucks, much less one for each truck.
I was thinking maybe plant based plastics could help but my marine biologist friend told me about how biodegradable plastics that end up in the ocean create algal blooms which can be devastating to an eco system. This article was not reassuring either:

I think there’s a strong case for bamboo replacing a lot of other uses for wood, it’s very regenerative and requires less water. Deluxe needs to make a bamboo deck for credibility sake, cause I sure as shit ain’t riding one of these:

Bamboo isn’t a hardwood like maple is. I think it would be good for longboards possibly but I can’t see it giving good pop or lasting nearly as long. It’s funny, I watch a couple of skaters channels on YouTube who are vegan and say they’re always looking for shoes that don’t use animal products but keep going back to suede shoes because they’re better. I respect their honesty about why they make the choices they do. I’m not vegan btw I like eating meat too much lol. I suppose my point is it’s refreshing seeing people how practice what they believe without being preachy or militant about it which, let’s be honest, a lot of vegans can be. Landyachtz has a “one board one tree” program which I like. I think if more of not all board companies or woodshops adopted something like that it would be a good place to start.

7 bamboo plys = no fun. too stiff. i got a free sample deck and couldn't ride it more than a few sessions it just felt dead. maple/ bamboo combos work. habitat had some really nice 6 maple/ 1 bamboo ply decks a few years back.

My brother had a bamboo board years ago when they first launched and they were it was terrible. Flat like a plank and the pop wasn't there at all. Probably gotten better over time but I have to think that the wood from skateboarding is probably a fraction of the trees used for furniture or paper.

Exactly. My earlier post said this. Probably like 0.000001% of the world’s population are skateboarders I doubt we have any measurable effect on the planet vs furniture makers or anything else. You want to do good works awesome but don’t over estimate things.

I'm not saying that bamboo deck company is factual in there assessment and I do agree that over-exaggeration and fatalism do not help environmentalist arguments but let's be honest here. Yes, skateboarders make up a tiny % of the population compared to people who use furniture but decks are insanely disposable. I can't imagine how many boards pros go through. I know it was 1 or 2 a month when I was in my prime, as an average skateboarder. I'd say its far to assume skate decks are a significant use of North American maple, a tree that grows relatively slowly.
This Forbes article is quoting the same thing (maybe they got it from the Bamboo skate manufactures without actually researching, who knows). They are also claiming 100,000s of decks are made a month.

I'm not an expert on the maple tree, so I have no idea how fast it grows to replenish fallen trees, how demanding it is on water, if there are plantations set aside for maple trees (just like paper plantations) and if the mono culture adversely affects the surrounding ecosystem.
The forgotten R of conservation is Refuse (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Part of being environmentally conscious is refusing to get another board until it's really necessary; easier said than done of course. Also, shorter run or on demand board pressing form the woodshop. I'm sure there are thousands of boards that lie sitting in a shop or warehouse not being bought because the graphic sucks or the size / shape is way out there.

Has anyone seen these “pillage” videos on YouTube? Pros go the Santa Cruz or Creature or wherever and I guess pick out their flow but they always grab like 20 decks 10 pairs of trucks and wheels etc. You have to know that’s not all for them and it’s not all being skated. They’ll say this is a wall hanger or something. Maybe contact your favorite companies and start asking questions. On our own we can stop buying wall hangers or hoarding decks. Maybe we can look into products like a variation on the Powell tailbone but thinner to prevent razor tail and prolong pop. I’m not an environmentalist by any mean for full disclosure. I think that Greta chick is a puppet and AOC’s bullshit about the world ending in 12 years is exactly that, bullshit. I’m 41 and I remember the first earthday I remember scientists saying we’d be in a new ice age in 50 years because of cfcs and such. The whole climate thing is political. Ask yourself this outside of politics when do you hear anything about it? If things were as bad as we’re lead to believe why isn’t noaa nasa and every scientist on earth screaming about it? I mean one species of owl gets threatened by a new highway in California I hear about it in Florida. All I guess I’m saying is let’s not just blindly eat what we’re being fed but think about things critically for ourselves and draw our own conclusions. Ok I’ll hop off my soapbox now. Please don’t stone me lol
-
C'mon Old Guy, you really have to have your head in the sand to not see how badly we are fucking the planet. Ever seen the clear cuts in the Northwest, depleted coral reefs, daily species extinction in the Amazon, dead zones in the Gulf of Oman, the amount of plastic in the ocean, wildlife and our own bodies?
Heard about the air quality in Delhi last week?
I get not blindly accepting what's being fed to us by politicians but let's not be completely blind to very real, tangible destruction. You are old not stupid.
-
Where did I say I didn’t think there was any change happening? And also where did I call anyone stupid? If you want to effect real change go get India and China to do more. I just think it’s more a political tool than anything. What I also find interesting is you didn’t contradict anything I said just pointed out some examples of things you or I couldn’t possibly prove.
Bottom line if your feels are so hurt that skateboards are murdered the planet stop skating. Put your money where your mouth is so to speak.
-
Holy crap. These things are pretty easily proven. What a clown... "more political than anything." ::)
I totally accept my part in it. Try to do what I can where I can. With what occupation I do, lifestyle choices and so on but that was not my point in all this.
The point is environmental degradation (not change) is very real and yes, used by some as a political agenda but nevertheless you're a fucking idiot if you think its not 'provable.'
-
Ouch my feels oh wait I’m an adult not a millennial snowflake lol. I said what I felt like I need to. Enjoy your echo chamber bruh 😜

If we were able to make decks with bamboo that skated like maple, it would have already been done. Bamboo grows like an invasive weed. Super easy to grow.
Look at a bamboo plant. It's a pole. Great for structural support but youre not getting good flat plywood from that. Fuckin 1st grade shit, jesus lord.

Oldguy - your right Greta is a puppet even though I think she genuinely cares about the earths she’s undoubtedly a puppet of the liberal agenda.
And yes climate change is political, but that doesn’t mean it’s not an existential crisis. It really is.
I think you don’t hear a lot of people championing it in a meaningful way because it’s not going to be better recycling that will make the difference, true climate change combat is going to require an economic shift that corporations don’t want to deal with.
Reduce reuse recycle was co-opted by the same corporations pushing climate change denial because it exonerates them from any wrong doing when they are in fact the true problem to be reckoned with.
And a lot of scientists to agree with this, but a lot of science is funded by special interests so there’s also not going to be a consensus.
And no one is saying the world is going to end, it’s just that the planet for younger generations will be increasingly less hospitable due to the effects of climate change.

It was not very graceful of me to call you a fucking idiot, I concede that. But you are incredibly ignorant and uneducated. Very telling that Snowflake is your only retort... Not really sure what your point is in all this...
That aside, I am older than you... you daft little cunt. ;D

Combination. 1 or 2 plys of bamboo with 5 or 6 plys of maple actually works quite well from my experience. Not a perfect solution by any means but a step.

I agree with some of that.
What I don't agree with is something you mentioned earlier,
"The whole climate thing is political. Ask yourself this outside of politics when do you hear anything about it? If things were as bad as we’re lead to believe why isn’t noaa nasa and every scientist on earth screaming about it?"
Many scientists are indeed screaming about it. To dismiss the "whole" thing as political is incredibly naive and yes, incredibly idiotic.

My favorite quote “it’s better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt”
You should take your own advice on that one.

I’m 44, and we have different memories.
2- Greta works with environmentalists in here home, they all came up with the school strike thing to get the media to pay attention.
She’s become a celebrity cause, but if you actually think she’s a puppet for some George Soros bullshit you obviously have no idea how the ultra rich use their funds to sway public opinion.
The CFCs thing? I remember that well, with the ozone layer opening up at the poles. Very well documented by science, and there was something called the Montreal Accords that got us to act globally to reduce CFCs, and the ozone (which forms naturally due to chemical reactions in the upper atmosphere) healed. That is until recently when scientists found CFCs again and pinpointed the sources to a rogue refrigeration factory in China.
The 12-year end of the world thing you don’t seem to understand either. The world doesn’t end in ten years, no one is saying that.
What happens is that if we don’t reduce emissions enough in ten years and change our course of output we will be locked into a warming cycle that looks to be catastrophic, that will continue to grow and get worse IN THE FUTURE.
That is the meaning of we only have 12 years left.
Here is a graph explaining the situation
(https://cdn-vox--cdn-com.cdn.ampproject.org/i/s/cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/TEExAa-JAxaNjXXSHYh9EU6KJiM=/1400x0/filters:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/10798957/fossil_fuel_chart_f.jpg)
And if you are not aware already, the Earth doesn’t warm uniformly, it experiences greater heating the farther you get away from the equator, with the biggest changes happening at the poles.
There is nowhere that will not be affected, but moreso in the north.
This is threatening to all life in Earth, which is why Greta is so passionate about it.
If you care about you kid’s future, it’s worth researching.
(Edited for needless snark)
By the way, I’m a different cuck that the guy you were arguing with befo

Who was the person that founded earth day? He was a politician. Greta’s parents are an opera singer and a film producer/director. Also search YouTube for the rebel media vid about asking her unscripted questions. It’s very telling. If you want to swallow cnn or msnbc full send go for it. I really don’t care. All I’m saying is it’s interesting how you don’t hear anyone but politicians screaming about this and no one is attacking the biggest polluters in the world. AOC has on video said “the world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t stop climate change” and that’s insane. I really don’t give a shit if you like what I’m saying. Yeah I got the date of the first earth day wrong my childhood memory was flawed. Bottom line is it’s not nearly as bad as we are being told. Yes we need to find better ways to do things but the “crisis” isn’t one. Now this is the last time I’m posting in this thread so you can scream into your echo chamber all you want.
-
I’m glad you don’t blindly follow CNN or MSNBC but having faith in The Rebel?
Read a book written by an actual scientist, please.
And no one but the politicians are screaming for this? There have been huge marches around the world for Greta’s strikes and other occasions (like the 350 marches) for years now.
You really don’t hear any of this?
You think the CFCs are connected to the global cooling theory?
You believe only politicians want a Green New Deal?
Greta is the puppet is some globalist agenda?
You are reading the wrong information.
It’s easy to say, and it’s hard to find truthful news in a time like ours, but it’s not that hard if you evaluate information from several sources, and see which sources can back up their claims.
People who actually read science have been asking this for decades, it’s not some political issue, it’s a human survival one.
But sure, it’s not bad, believe whatever the Rebel says.

Protecting the environment should not be a political, partisan issue.
Recycle your trash, conserve resources, and don't spread toxins into the air and water for the reason that you would rather live in a clean environment with a diversity of life instead of a dirty one with humans and cockroaches.
Let's say everything will be fine if humans don't change behavior. I would prefer to not have trash in the ocean, have smog in the cities, or deforestation in the mountains because I want to go swimming in clean water, breath normally walking around town, and to have forests to go hiking through.
-
Skateparks always just have a garbage can....they should have recycling too....
It sounds super corny but pros also can lead by example....honestly, we see lifestyle pieces about all sorts dumb of shit....having a skater break down ways they can help the environment can make a difference and there's value in it.

If nothing major and radical is done to change our energy consumption, and environmental damage during the next 15 years, the human civilization as we know it will end fast. Forget democracy, forget freedom, forget rights, forget peace in western countries. You can argue about how much time we have to make big changes, but there is enough data and research (it's not a subjective opinion it's a fact) about climate change and its impact to be really fucking worried.

IIRC he mentioned in his Nine Club intervew he would give his used setups to homies or kids around the spot. Not the not sustainable but at least the stuff gets reused by others before it gets tossed. Raging and focusing your a board that is still good, that's not cool.
-
Why do you even bring up it being right wing?
-
I think because if you say you prefer stuff made domestically some people might confuse that as being an economic nationalist a la Trump.
I can definitely see why one would prefer US made stuff when it comes to workers rights and sweatshop labor (although with the decline of unions this is getting to be more of a grey area).
As for the environmental side of things, is casting a truck or pouring a wheel and more or less harmful depending on if it’s China or the states?
The US’s environmental laws are getting laxer while China’s are getting better.
I can definitely see Canadian wood being shipped to China and then back to the States as wasteful, but then again, we need to move away from this bullshit wasteful disposable deck thing anyways and start using equipment that lasts longer.

It could be turning but I believe the US still has stricter laws on EP. Then you have to factor in shipping it back to the US once its manufactured and then shipping it out again once more for distribution.

Earlier in this thread someone wondered about the number of skateboarders. It's reported to be 11 million globally, I'd assume most of them are living in developed countries, mostly US. Net worth of the industry is $4.8B.
These figures show that consumer choices are on scale of small country (or large city). Not insignificant at all.

no plastic wrap on the boards. wonder how that'll be received by the world / if other companies would get on board with this. would be sick if when you order direct from the supplier you could have the option for shrinkwrap (collectors) or to forego it (boards you plan on skating).

About time. The plastic is absolutely useless. I believe serious collectors even take it off. Larry is quite conscious of such things if you read between the lines of his sarcasm.

I'm totally down regarding not using plastic.

The whole climate thing is political.
"Politicians, economists and even some natural scientists have tended to assume that tipping points1 in the Earth system — such as the loss of the Amazon rainforest or the West Antarctic ice sheet — are of low probability and little understood. Yet evidence is mounting that these events could be more likely than was thought, have high impacts and are interconnected across different biophysical systems, potentially committing the world to long-term irreversible changes."

Is a single fucking one of you willing to do anything of substance since you’re so convinced the world is going to end in 12-15 years? I didn’t think so. When the world is about to end in 10 years I’ll be sure to check back in here and tell you all you were right. Until then you can all keep screaming into your echo chamber. It’s entertaining.

Aah yes, the butthurt ‘you are all hypocrites for living in a capitalist society!’ rant.
I’ve tried a lot of what you suggested, short of living in the woods.
But individual boycotts and lifestyle changes will never make enough of a difference to get us off this path. The change needs to be systematic or nothing at all.
As for the crybaby hypocrite call-out, you’ve obviously never tried to live up to an ideal in your life.
It is impossible to live ethically under capitalism. You can do what you can to live less destructively, but you can’t rsca the fact that something or someone will get fucked over for something you consume.
So bitching about people not giving up their entire existence and instead advocating for a more ethical system (while living in an unethical one) is not hypocrisy, it’s realistic.
But go ahead and blame everything on Al Gore (and I will admit that dude IS a hypocrite) instead of reading the science.

It’s not impossible. It’s just too uncomfortable for all you spoiled self important entitled snowflakes. You want shit to change then put in the work and quit expecting someone else to do it for you. You think there’s this vast difference between any of you and me because I’m older? Like I can’t remember how it was it be 15-25? Come on. I don’t buy new phones, I’ve never owned a car and take public transit every day, I recycle and compost, I avoid buying things in packaging that I can’t reuse, I don’t buy new clothes until it’s necessary, and the clothes I do but I repair until I can’t any longer, I don’t eat animals, and I reduce water consumption in every way I can.
Living in the forest is actually less environmentally friendly as remote lifestyles require cars to fulfill basic societal requirements (i.e. taxes). A hunter-gatherer way of living is unrealistic, particularly with the number of laws surrounding hunting and harvesting in the US.
And for everything I do, there some self-righteous sad sack who insists his way of life does nothing to the world, comes on forums to spout off how sensitive and ignorant everyone is then runs away because he doesn’t want to hear any dissenting opinions that might ruffle his feathers or make him think that maybe he is damaging the world around him.

Wow- what a spicy topic! I personally love how much skateboarding harbors iconoclastic view points. skateboarding is a counter culture and part of that role is to be skeptical of the mainstream. the current political mainstream is unapologetically left leaning; so i don't begrudge your skepticism Oldguy78
BUT- questioning skateboarding's environmental impact is totally valid
whether you "believe" in climate change or not, its obvious that a nearly 5bn dollar industry (citing a previous post) has environmental impacts- pollution - waste - these are realities of any industrial process, and a skateboarder can examine them, and even criticize them, without being a hypocrite.
The problem is that climate change/global warming has been made out to be an ideological issue when it's not.
The entire reason why there is a "climate debate" is because big businesses have propped up an elaborate propaganda campaign to create doubt! their motive for this is to avoid regulation of their industries and protect the money they make. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpbZCPvCEjQ)
There's a really good documentary called "Merchants of Doubt" which exposes how big businesses created the "climate deniers" movement by paying people to pose as credible professionals and propagate misinformation!
watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqiCLuOtXts
the craziest thing is that even with all the scientific evidence, which debunks climate deniers misinformation (I have a really good website for this too that I will add once I remember the domain name), the doubt is still enough to create skepticism culturally- but mostly along ideological lines.
why is that?
well, a recent study found that people are more likely to discriminate against others based on ideology more than any other socio/economic factor. (race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, class, etc)
:o this goes for both liberals and conservatives! ::)
Basically people choose what information is credible or not credible based on the views of their "affinity" group (i.e. friendlys on the ideological spectrum). the full article is here: http://journal.sjdm.org/13/13313/jdm13313.pdf
but theres a less technical/more readable one I can share with you once i find it.
and dude, whether this UK women got arrested for "misgendering" someone on twitter is real or not.. I haven't looked into enough to be satisfied of a truthful answer yet... the source used in the youtube video you posted (uk daily mail) is a tabloid and is not very credible. to me it sounds sensationalistic enough to be skeptical... not that i don't believe that it couldn't happen based on the current state of free speech in our society. but yea- seems to be beside the point about skateboardings environmental impact anyway.

And that is exactly how you engage with someone of a differing opinion! I’ll check out the vids you posted later and thank you for being both thoughtful and respectful. The rest of these guys could learn a lot from that post about disagreements and debate.

We went from discussing the merits of bamboo vs maple and then you made it a political tirade about AOC is bullshit, environmentalism is left wing propaganda, stating a whole lot of opinion as fact, before saying that someone was being over sensitive.
It looks like you came in here wanting to start shit and now it’s happening but not in the way you pictured. You made the conversation political and started calling everybody names.
You don’t have anything to contribute and as much as you’re claiming this to be an echo chamber, you sure are resistant to hearing anyone else. Say something of substance about environmentalism or find a different thread.

Find a different thread? I started a thread about etnies shoes and the tongue sliding on them and a guy from this thread came in there talking shit about this thread. This entire message board seems like one bod pile of shit to me. That’s why I’m thankful for forums like ar15.com that are populated by actual adults. God I can’t wait for the boogaloo

Also a very rudimentary google search with give you the actual British law on Gender discrimination:
"The Sex Discrimination (Gender Reassignment) Regulations 1999 extended the existing Sex Discrimination Act, and made it illegal to discriminate against any person on the grounds of gender reassignment, but only in the areas of employment and vocational training."
Which seems sound but far short of the blanket statement you made Oldguy.
That video you posted seemed largely sensationalism about people getting in trouble for perpetually harassing others online. Its not like you walk around the UK having to watch your Ps and Qs bc of a fear of the PC over reach. That's just not reality. You talk about you being the logical one but it seems like you're the one whose politics are locked into a very rigid frame work.
Either way you are have now also exposed yourself as a bigot, who struggles with transgender issues.

Damn, who knew perpetual wound vaginas had such a environmental impact in the world of skateboard manufacturing.

Can we go back discussing the environmental impact of manufacturing skateboard paraphernalia now?
One not mentioned viewpoint is material usage effectiveness rate. Recent study from Sweden (if I remember correctly) stated that pair of jeans equals 25 kilos of waste - mostly unusable liquids from dying, and a modern cell phone is around 85 kilos, mostly byproducts of mining and refining rare earth materials. I wonder what the waste mass might be for a complete?
-
On the Environmental Impact of skateboarding:
My personal opinion is that the material for boards is pretty inconsequential- wood is a renewable resource after all. the subtlety lays in how such a resource is managed or mis-managed.
Supposedly Dwindle makes sure to only use sustainably harvested wood, but I have my doubts.
It would be cool to see a company take on their environmental impact more directly. maybe planting 2 trees for every one tree harvested for their wood? or off setting their carbon in some way. Create zero plastic waste (e.g. PRANA clothing)
really anything modeled on the way Patagonia approaches manufacturing would be cool to see.
Habitat/AWS would be an ideal company to do something like that just based on the name alone and previous environmental gimmicks they've used to sell stuff in the past.
Contests definitely need to take on environmental impact- especially now that skateboarding will be in the olympics- but imagine if SLS or DewTour or whatever became carbon neutral events? that would be quite a statement. not impossible either, look to Radiohead who've already done massive concerts that were entirely carbon neutral. (ok probably not entirely if you consider every minutiae but you get the point). Again, zero plastic waste would be cool.
theres a lot of ways skateboarding as a culture can at least make a statement of intention to take a step away from destroying the earth.
I always thought of "Skate and Destroy" as "Skate and Destroy the culture/civilization that is destroying us"
but if we get down to the nitty gritty, the essence underlaying the whole thing we have to look at materialism- the industry is a blatant driver of consumption, and not just in a utilitarian sense. how many people who buy into skateboarding actually skate? it's a marketed identity that manipulates people into buying shit to fill the hole industrial civilization has left in our souls.
beware of apathy. if you are apathetic it probably means you lack connection. and you'll buy something to make you feel better- which it never really does.
I like this quote from Morris Berman
"much was lost in the transition to modernity: craftmanship, a deep appreciation of beauty, community, silence and, above all, a sense of spiritual purpose."
it points out the fact that having a sense spiritual purpose in somehow integral to the human psyche. we need to recover this sense not just individually but as a culture(western civ. not just sk8 culture)
Has anybody read: Charles Eisenstein's "the More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know is Possible" ?
really great examination of the underlying factors for our cultural/environmental crisis
it's kind of like Daniel Quinn's "Ishmael" but less preachy
also "Natural Capitalism" is a really good book with awesome ideas on how to tweak capitalism in a way that isn't environmentally/socially destructive
Cheers all!

Earlier this year I put a plastic rail on a board for the first time in my life. I really enjoy sliding with them and all, but thinking about it I'm not that into leaving small plastic slivers in my wake. Is there any reason to not make wooden rails other than perhaps weight?

They don’t slide better than wood. Could make rails out of some biodegradable plastic. Dunno how the slide properties of those are though. Definitely something I’d be interested in though.

this was dope. also the satori wheels were good.
also these momentum eco soy wheels were great. too bad mccrank doesnt even ride for a company he helped start, or alteast ride their wheels.

This is a major step in this industry, whose products are typically out of step with the needs of the planet. Momentum is breaking new ground by producing one of the first-ever environmentally enhanced skateboard wheels. The wheels feature a 25% soy based compound which is added to the regular urethane mix, reducing the non-renewable fossil fuel ingredients. The green advantages aside they are still high performance and feature an amazing series of graphics from Brooklyn based graphic designer Esao Andrews.

Oh yeah right, using rails because they slide better slipped my mind there, I just like the extra stability of the toe side rail so for myself I wouldn't mind going wooden. Maybe I should make one of my own and see. Biodegradable plastics should definitely be an option though for sure.
edit: I'd ride some soy wheels for sure

Arbor has been making a sucrose-added downhill wheel for a minute, if you want something for the cruiser.
https://skate.arborcollective.com/collections/sucrose-initiative
I think I mentioned it before, but if you can’t find specially-designed environmentally friendly products, use your gear as long as possible, so choose stuff that will last a long time (flight decks, Lib Tech boards) and reuse/repurpose old equipment.
Oh, and work for the overthrow of capitalism with a democratically planned economy

Combination. 1 or 2 plys of bamboo with 5 or 6 plys of maple actually works quite well from my experience. Not a perfect solution by any means but a step.
I had 2 of the bamboo skateboard brand with this combo and I liked it. Really strong and Poppy. When I went back to Maple only I realized that I like the feel of Maple only better, but if anyone is interested I'd recommend to try bamboo and Maple. I was always worried though that they probably procure the bamboo from China, which I felt probably defeated the purpose of me thinking I was helping the environment. If there were local produced Maple and bamboo boards I probably would skate that only and just get used to it. The one thing that I noticed is they get vertical cracks where the bamboo chutes join, but I never did snap one and I'm 190 lbs and have broken many boards from not landing on bolts or not landing properly on lipslides. The bamboo skateboards brand though only seems to have really steep kicks too so I wouldn't recommend if you aren't into that.

Stop buying shit you don't need that was manufactured on the other side of the world from an online shop 3,000 miles away.

Maybe a good way to repurpose old boards? I don’t use sliders but seems like that could work.
If you figure it out, that’s a thousand dollar idea

Those Arbor Spuds seem pretty cool. I like the name too. Bit big at 64 mm though, even for my cruiser. 🤔
