Hard to remember because this was a LONG time ago, but I think it was Tom Knox (original version). I remember doing really horrible stiff-legged hurricanes trying to look like him. I didn’t but I thought I was sick.
-
B.A. as soon as I saw his part in Welcome To Hell. Didn't start skating until 2001, and a family friend gave me a bunch of old videos and it was in the pile. The cab flip on flat sealed the deal.
Next favourtie skaters were Dill and Boulala after watching Photo and Sorry.
-
Everyone on thps
Gravette (And Now era)
Kirchart/JJ mindfield combo
-
Bob Burnquist. I could probably say Tony Hawk as well, but I had a perfect seat at the 2001 X Games in Philly and witnessed his legendary run that won him the gold medal (over an also incredible run from Bucky Lasek). Chris Cole was and is probably my favorite street skater ever.
-
Peter Ramondetta. Circa "It's Time" was my first video and I was hooked on his skating! He had power and finesse, but also just did his own thing, you know? Juat blue collar type, to the point, skating.

any tall dudes from the early 90's 2000's partly because i identify with that style. for the longest time i thought i was too tall to skate so seeing them skating helped me get over that hangup

Kenny Anderson in one step beyond got me out of the thps roster

Kris Markovich I think... 🤷♂️
-
Mine was either guy mariano or frankie hill in the old powell videos, i was the youngest in the crew skating my older brother so i identified w the small /young guys
-
When I was like eleven I had this Ed Templeton phase, but the thing is my introduction to him was through the videos Berzerker, This Is Skateboarding and Good and Evil because those were some of the first videos I had access to. I had no idea he was considered an old pro and dropping some of his last parts at the time.

Lance Mountain. He was on the cover of the first issue of Thrasher I ever saw. Back then exposure to skate media was almost impossible to come by and so he was some kind of superstar to me. Plus those dreamy eyebrows...

Not Doug “Pineapple” Saladino?
-
I really wanted to learn how to surf and since we lived in Boston that wasn't really an option so I got curious about skateboarding and we rented Shackle Me Not from the local video store. SMN was the first skate video I saw and although I had no real way to comprehend what I was seeing Matt Hensley stood out. His Hokus Pokus footage is still how I wish I skated today.

Ray Barbee because of Ban This

absolutely and unequivocally Mark Gonzales, and very much because of the indelible value of these images in my psyche (i've had the first Gonz graphic tattooed on me for over 20 years--Jeff Whitehead did it for me)

THPS roster aside, I was 13 and huge in to Chris Cole in the early 00s. I bought Zero everything and had those red, white and blue Zero sweatbands. Got circa JT shoes to complete the ensemble. Shortly after I got one of those Jerry Hsu how to use chopsticks enjoi decks that eventually lead me to discovering Louie Barletta who has been number 1 for me ever since.
-
For me it was Bob Burnquist and Pat Channita back in 2001
-
Geoff Rowley Sorry/Really Sorry/Chichagof era.
-
Bob burnquist, I got into skating when tony hawks came out and he had a few clips in the intro. If I remember correctly... there was also a great section of all the neversoft game creators learning to skate... funny to think these were the first real skate clips I ever saw.
But my first idol of skating was probably bam margera or Geoff rowley.
-
Heath from thr end, then I got a few regional videos and I really liked Nick Matlin cause he did a boardslide to lipslide and that blew my littlr mind.

Ray was definitely an early one for me too. That Ban This part was, and still kind of is, how I think skating should look in real life. You don’t have to do the gnarliest tricks. Just put a bunch of decent stuff in a line and keep rolling.
-
Andy Stone and Pepe Martinez
-
Appleyard....My friend let me borrow flip sorry on vhs and I copied it to another vhs along with shortys guilty and I'm pretty sure i burnt the tape up after watching it so much

Tony Hawk. I was Bones Brigade kid growing up. We idolized those dudes.

Tim Brauch. An ad in a Transworld from about 1996 or so caught my attention. I believe he was doing an ollie on a large grass gap, with a little drop, from sidewalk, to what looked like a parking lot. I didn't have access to videos then and only had hand me down Transworlds from few years before. This was around 1999/2000. Once I had access to current issues, I learned he had passed away by seeing articles on contest being held in his memory. RIP Tim Brauch, 1974-1999.

No one else has said Koston so far. Everyone is ashamed now to admit they were fans at some point! Koston was really cool on VHS especially for a kid watching him. In skateboardings social media era he just looks like a giant kook.
-
After seeing Feasters (my first video), Jeremy Klein was my favourite. Then I saw Questionable and Mike Carroll became my favourite and was until about 2005.
Now it’s Tiago.

Bam for sure. But then I watched Sorry and was blown away by Appleyard, Rowley, and Arto.

Same except I watched in 2000. It blew my mind right away. Then his part in this is skateboarding really cemented it .

Glad his name still comes up every now and again. I grew up in NH, and Tim Brauch was the first real pro I ever saw skate my local park. It was mindblowing. He skated so fast and eclipsed every gnarly thing the local hometown heroes had done in a single casual line while warming up. I couldn't even wrap my head around how good he was. Was really bummed to hear he passed away just a few years afterwards.
-
Ragdoll and Diego The Butcher were my favorites when I started
-
Caballero. I thought he was the coolest Brigader (Brigadier?).
-
Lance mountain, later neil blender, rodney mullen, that sort of thing. A slow evolution from buying boards based on a skater’s look/graphics to actually caring about their skating style.
-
How about some of your first favorite skaters who still are you favorites? The first skate mag I ever got in the mail had an article about David Gravette in it, and to this day he's still one of my favorites
-
Guy Mariano, maybe Penny shortly after. I wasn't particularly too into Guy post mouse, or a huge Penny fan post Really Sorry. Health, Reynolds, AVE became my favs post Guy and Tom. Later Dylan, Austyn, Jake J, Cromer etc
-
Probably Rune Glifberg, hes still sick!

Who was your first favorite skater? Lots of people act like it was someone epic, but I doubt it.
Mine was Tosh Towsend, which is pathetic since Sight Unseen, my first movie, was fucking rad, and featured some of the best skaters ever (e.g., Cariel, Sanchez, Kirchart). But Tosh was 2 years older than me and seemed to be living my dream.
Ronnie Creager initially, after I got my first skate video, Foundation’s Superconductor Supercollider. That didn’t last very long though.
Mike Carroll for a bit because of the FTC Video Finally... (along with a dubbed VHS of Virtual Reality and Questionable).
Dill and Gino because of 101’s SNUFF. First time hearing Wu-Tang Clan, which was a pretty seminal moment.
However, Once A Visual Sound came out, I was strictly a Stereo fan. I was all about Carl Shipman, Ethan Fowler, Dune and Jason Lee. That’s pretty much stuck with me because their styles are timeless.
There was a time during 1995 when I was really stoked on Tom Penny too, but who wasn’t?
-
i really liked Mike Maldonado because he skated to "London Dungeon". he had a lot of pop and introduced me to the misfits. i want to say it was Arto&Geoff after i saw Feedback. then i went into full Greco mode like most hispanic kids in LA at the time.
-

yeah me too..plus Tom Knox "Rent-A-Cop" deck was my first real double kick skateboard, coming up from a cheap department store skateboard. Troops of tomorrow video was the 1st skate video I've ever watch back in 1991

Tony and Elissa because of THPS
Pretty much any one on World Industries once I learned more. I used to browse their website for hours on dial up Internet. I was pretty stoked on mike peterson and chad bartie

Got into skating around when THPS came out and naturally gravitated to Kareem Campbell.
I didn’t even have a board at that point though. After I really started I would say Jason dill cause of photosynthesis or Jason Adams cause of label kills.

101 Koston was pretty much legendary at the time; especially circa Falling Down (1993). Gang Starr’s “Now Your Mine” definitely set a tone. Some local skaters in Denver wrote “Eric Koston Is God” in wax at our Safeway/Parker Gaps spot. It was a different time. There was a mystery to him and that all went out the window by the turn of the century. Now, all bets are off. He’s still a legend, but somehow a total dork too.
What was funny about the wax graffiti is that someone else crossed out Koston and wrote in Mischker, who was my elementary school friend’s older brother and the first older skater I looked up to. Locals rule.

Jamie Thomas. Played a ton of Tony Hawk Pro Skater, my first complete was a Zero logo board, and the first video I bought was Misled Youth.
-
Willy Santos just because the "best" skater at my middle-school thought he was the absolute coolest pro skater ever.
However, I think Kris Markovich was probably the first skater I found on my own that I was super hyped on (until I met him in person, that was a huge bummer). Or, maybe, I was super hyped on Dan Drehobl first because I remember watching his part in some old Thrasher VHS over and over again.

I liked that rebellious attitude as a 10 year old. And Vision was top dogs then.
No idea what was coming a few years later.
My 15 year old self definitely did not know how to comprehend that. (The crime itself and also being letdown on that level by someone you admire)

Watched best of 411v1 koston profile and between the tricks and the attitude koston was my favorite

Mike McDermott or Jerry Hsu

Christian Hosoi (had a room full of posters of him, despite not dropping in on vert until over a decade later)
Frankie Hill (his 'Propaganda' part destroyed my mind)
Matt Hensley (still the late-80's GOAT)

Tommy and Jim in Animal Chin.
-
Jason Lee.
-
Friends older brother showed me Non Fiction and Cow, really gravitated towards Cardiel, TNT, Drake Jones, and Tommy.
-
My neighbor gave me his copy of Maple's Black Cat so my first favorite skateboarder was Jerry Hsu. Still holds pretty strong.

Andrew Reynolds and Heath Kirchart, both still top 5 to this day.

Muska.
First video I saw and liked was Fulfill The Dream and Muska immediately became my favorite first.
-
Chad Muska because it was 1999/2000.
-
Rune Glifberg was Danish AND in a video game, so that basically left me no choice :)
Then I found out about skate videos and a friend got sorry (because of Rune), and then Rowley and Arto was added to the list (this was all in a relatively short time frame)
-
Eric Koston. Menikmati was just released in the last year.
My homie had it on VHS and we would watch it almost daily. His part blew me away.
-
the bird man
-
I used to watch all the commercials in the Tony Hawk games and Bob Burnquist was one of the first guys I saw. He blew my mind with all the insane tricks and stunts he could pull off. Koston was my second favorite when I watched his eS K6 commercial with the switch backside flip over the loading dock ramp.
-
David Gravette. The first exposure I had to skateboarding that wasnt THPS/viva la bam was through the transworld mags my middle school would get. It was right around the time And Now was coming out. Kenny Hoyle and trapasso were favorites as well. I also saw Wes Kremer doing a shifty flip for a billabong ad that I thought was sooo sick.
Current favorite? Jake Johnson
-
Russ Howell, got his book in the early 70's as a young kid
-
COLBY CARTER on them yellow bars
-
Hosoi, first favorite
Tiago, current favorite
Coincidence?
-
Geoff Rowley. Because of THPS 4 and Sorry.
Currently Ray Barbee

I really liked British skater Mike Manzoori (and now Sole Tech or independent filmer, or both, I don't know) when I was young because he was my age, sponsored by Powell-Peralta which was the shit then and he did tricks I liked.
I once saw him at a contest and he was doing impossible stalefish grabs over a quarter pipe hip at least 5 five high which I really liked (and actually as I am writing this I would like to see somebody do again).
After the contest we went to McDonald's and he was sitting there with some other skaters as we walked up to the counter. So I told him I liked the impossible stalefish and some other tricks as well I have forgotten since.
He was really friendly and said something like cool man, and shook my hand. We then walked to the counter and one of my friends who was behind me said, "Right after you walked away he shook his head and all his friends were laughing at you."
I still cringe when I see his name in the credits of some video.
In some interview before that I read he was into The Velvet Underground, which I am still listening to 30 years later, along with a whole range of other bands and artists which I would maybe never (or much later for sure) have discovered.
So thanks Mike.

if i am being totally honest it was jamie thomas - a combination of THPS being my gateway and my first proper skate buddy being a total zero-head. he showed me dying to live first (which had just come out) and we worked backwards to welcome to hell, through misled youth and thrill of it all - so JT had last part in the first four full videos i ever saw.
first video i owned myself was menikmati, though it was already a couple of years old at the time.
i went to the skateshop to buy 'sorry' - accompanied by my mum, lol - and it turned out to be about three times the price i'd anticipated having never bought a skate video before. she, understandably, regened on getting it for me. the dude in the shop, watching me visibly suffering at being so close yet so far from obtaining the holy grail, told us to come back tomorrow and he'd give me some of his old videos for free.
we did so and he gave me menikmati, waiting for the world and FSU. aside from me banging on about it all the time, that guy's generosity was my parents' first taste of the wider world of skateboarding so -fortunately for me - they always saw skaters through the 'community-minded-hobbyists' lense rather than the 'drop out and spend every day stoned at the park' lense.
i was on the look out for a new, non-THPS skater to be my fave so people would know how 'core' and knowledgeable i was. at that age, two years is a really long time, so menikmati already seemed ancient. the fact penny's footage was mostly an extra 4-5 years older still made it seem like this mysterious relic from a long lost era, so I adopted him as my fave thinking i'd made a super-original, out there choice. like those kids who get really into led zep or hendrix thinking it makes them superior to their more modern-minded peers. again, lol.
the first video that i got that was actually new was 'yeah, right'. i added gino as my joint fave because a) his part was amazing but also b) i hadn't really heard people talk about him and c) like tom penny, he had a super cool name.
so yeah, for a few years i was walking around telling people my two favourite skaters were tom and gino, as if i was some maverick skate connoisseur for liking these incredibly overlooked gems of skaters.
it was quite a while before i found out, they were literally the two most cliche, middle-of-the-road picks in the entire world.
mj, bastien, mccrank, rattray and senn were also up there early on.
for what it's worth, penny is still my fave.
-
^ that story is so fucking sick. Hope the guy who gave you those vids is doing well
-
Bam
-
Hosoi and Cab. Then I realized I will never be a sexy bare-chested Asian. So I moved onto Lee Ralph and Ben Schroeder.
-
I started skating in 2012, and Austyn Unlimited was the first video that really got me stoked to skate. Since then Gillette's been my fav
-
First favorite skeeter: Peter North
-
Rodney Mullen
-
Natas
-
Andrew Reynolds
-
The first was Tony Hawk. I grew up in the 90's and started skating a couple years before the 900.
My first favorite street skater was Reynolds. I loved his part in The End. I always wanted that orangutan board.
-
I hate to admit it but first favorite was Chad Fernandez. My first video was the storm and my second was globe opinion.
-
Heath. When I first started skating my friend had a CCS catalog with a sequence of his kickflip back lip from Rolling Thunder in it and it blew my 12 year old mind.
-
Andrew Reynolds, because of The End. I lived in a small town in NZ at the time and i think it was the first skate video i ever saw, followed shortly by The Storm and Fulfill The Dream.
-
Ethan Fowler was my first favorite skater, because Art Bars was the first full skate vid I ever saw. It was playing in full on some cable channel when I was about 13 years old. He did a bunch of stuff that was kind of against the grain for its time, like skating with one pant leg rolled up (was he about to go ride a bike?), having a Spock Rock haircut, a straight no-comply gap, and a bunch of ledge tricks where he landed in a sketchy firecracker down the last few stairs. Maybe not my absolute fave any more but still pretty sick, and ahead of his time now that “weird” tricks are more common. Skated to the White Stripes a few years before they blew up as well, even if they seem lame now.
-
bird man or bam

Ray Barbee, 411 issue 11. Playing guitar and skating. I was sold. https://youtu.be/iMtPOL0JMAo
My first ever skate video 411 issue 11. Still have the VHS copy.
For me it was Matt Pritchard, I remember getting really obsessed with the Panic/Blueprint team after the Mixed Media VHS. They seemed so cool all getting arrested and not giving a fuck.
A few years later I was at a pub in Newquay and Pritchard was literally sitting right next to me and I was too starstruck to say or do anything.
-
My dad was hyped on Cab when I was a kid and I remember watching Animal Chin on YouTube and Cab was my favourite. After that probably Chris Cole.
-
as i was very hyped about zero and fallen, it has to be chris cole. but haslam and daewon were up there as well
-
I don’t know if he was my FIRST favorite skater, but my first favorite part was Mike Rusczyk’s Art Bars Part.
I would definitely say he’s remained a favorite, and an example of how I approach my own skating.
