Friends older brother showed me Non Fiction and Cow, really gravitated towards Cardiel, TNT, Drake Jones, and Tommy.

My neighbor gave me his copy of Maple's Black Cat so my first favorite skateboarder was Jerry Hsu. Still holds pretty strong.

Eric Koston. He was almost everyone’s favorite at the turn of the century.
[close]
No one else has said Koston so far. Everyone is ashamed now to admit they were fans at some point! Koston was really cool on VHS especially for a kid watching him. In  skateboardings social media era he just looks like a giant kook.

Nah I loved koston growing up I don't give a shit about his personal life.
[close]

101 Koston was pretty much legendary at the time; especially circa Falling Down (1993). Gang Starr’s “Now Your Mine” definitely set a tone. Some local skaters in Denver wrote “Eric Koston Is God” in wax at our Safeway/Parker Gaps spot. It was a different time. There was a mystery to him and that all went out the window by the turn of the century. Now, all bets are off. He’s still a legend, but somehow a total dork too.

What was funny about the wax graffiti is that someone else crossed out Koston and wrote in Mischker, who was my elementary school friend’s older brother and the first older skater I looked up to. Locals rule.

I enjoyed this post

Rune Glifberg was Danish AND in a video game, so that basically left me no choice :)

Then I found out about skate videos and a friend got sorry (because of Rune), and then Rowley and Arto was added to the list (this was all in a relatively short time frame)

Eric Koston. Menikmati was just released in the last year.
My homie had it on VHS and we would watch it almost daily. His part blew me away.

I used to watch all the commercials in the Tony Hawk games and Bob Burnquist was one of the first guys I saw. He blew my mind with all the insane tricks and stunts he could pull off. Koston was my second favorite when I watched his eS K6 commercial with the switch backside flip over the loading dock ramp.

David Gravette. The first exposure I had to skateboarding that wasnt THPS/viva la bam was through the transworld mags my middle school would get.  It was right around the time And Now was coming out. Kenny Hoyle and trapasso were favorites as well. I also saw Wes Kremer doing a shifty flip for a billabong ad that I thought was sooo sick.

Current favorite? Jake Johnson
Every time the McRib comes out I buy it. I don't even like the damn things.

I really liked British skater Mike Manzoori (and now Sole Tech or independent filmer, or both, I don't know) when I was young because he was my age, sponsored by Powell-Peralta which was the shit then and he did tricks I liked.

I once saw him at a contest and he was doing impossible stalefish grabs over a quarter pipe hip at least 5 five high which I really liked (and actually as I am writing this I would like to see somebody do again).

After the contest we went to McDonald's and he was sitting there with some other skaters as we walked up to the counter. So I told him I liked the impossible stalefish and some other tricks as well I have forgotten since.

He was really friendly and said something like cool man, and shook my hand. We then walked to the counter and one of my friends who was behind me said, "Right after you walked away he shook his head and all his friends were laughing at you."

I still cringe when I see his name in the credits of some video.

In some interview before that I read he was into The Velvet Underground, which I am still listening to 30 years later, along with a whole range of other bands and artists which I would maybe never (or much later for sure) have discovered.

So thanks Mike.
