What are some products that you wouldn't even set up or wear if it was handed to you free? (This is not: "Oh I would take it so I could sell or trade it." This is, "this product we are giving you is what you will be skating or wearing for the next couple months, do you want it or not? We will beat you up if you take it and don't actually use it."
Other than some really horrible or offensive graphics I could probably skate any deck on the market. Even if it was an 80s reissue or a 7.25 popsicle I could find a way to skate it if it was free and I needed a board that bad.
Same with trucks. Who cares at this point.
Wheels, unless they were some kind of gimicky thing (one bearing?) or made of clay I could probably skate them.
Bearings, hardware, same.
If someone gave me grip tape that was not plain black I would have a hard time using it, but maybe if it was all i could get I would make it work. But I might actually say no thanks, I'm ok with not taking that free grip tape.
Shoes. This is where it starts to get interesting. I would wear anything in my size, but there are some logos I would be offended by seeing them on my feet, so I might Puleo them off with a exacto knife. If I couldn't do that then I might actually say no thanks.
I couldn't wear anything with the word "Supreme" on it, unless it was by Powell Peralta. If it was raining and they offered me a Supreme raincoat I would probably think about it so long I would already be soaked so it wouldn't matter.
What about you?
-
Grip with a logo on it, but especially Shake Junt or Grizzly.
Cariuma.
-
Shop gave me some caliber trucks. Never looked at em since
-
mob
pick a side, grip wars have begun
-
Big spitfire logo tee/hoodie/sweater.
Love the wheels though.
-
A deck smaller than 8.75. Don’t even have the trucks for that shit.
Big logo grip is also immediate no go criteria.
Also the obvious, anything racist/sexist/transhobic/bigoted in any way.

Ahhh hell nah! MOB OR DIE!
-
My mom got me a sheet of grizzly grip when she was in Hawaii. I said thank you and took it to the skate shop.
-
any bearings that are not swiss, grizzly griptape, 1 inch+ phillips hardware
-
I once bought a yellow pudwill board because it was 10 bucks. Had a lot of bad times on that yellow ass board. I’d look down and feel miserable even if the day wasn’t a bad one. If someone offered me a free board like that these days I’d say no thanks without hesitation
-
Recently donated a freebie 8.25 to Uprise. My feet are too damn big for anything below 8.5. Now that I've passed the 9.0 threshold, I can't go back.
Back in high school I used to rock griptape with graphics. I just found a picture in my mom's basement of me doing a tre flip on a Muska board with boombox griptape. Now it bugs me even if there's a lil die cut thing
-
Royal trucks
-
Anything Revive
Probably wouldn't feel great about wearing anything by $lave either.
-
I could never use any Shake Junk, Grizzly, or grip tape with big logos on it. Same with clothes that have all over prints. Anything energy drink related, Red Bull/Monster Hats, beanies, shirts, etc.
-
My mom got me a sheet of grizzly grip when she was in Hawaii. I said thank you and took it to the skate shop.
Isn’t that a t shirt? “My mom went to Hawaii and all I got was some little kid grip tape.”
-
rip n dip
revive
cariuma
anything nhs
any graphic griptape
any extremely hard wheels (harder than 101a)
a board that's smaller than 8.25, bigger than 8.6 and has a wheelbase longer than 14.4
most shoes
-
Lakai Telfords or anything by Rip’n’Dip
-
Energy drinks because I’m trying to get in shape for the summer
-
Now a days I wouldn’t take anything I won’t use.
Back in the day I would take any free usable product offered. Free pair of royal trucks? Sure. Fuck, one royal truck that is too narrow? Absolutely. Trinkets, knick-knacks, all that crap? Never.
It mostly grosses me out to go to a tradeshow or other work event and the vendors are giving all this cheap shit away and the organizer has to ribose bags for all the garbage people will be covering. In my example there are approximately 50 vendors/booths and I might take 3-4 things from 3-6 vendors. A tshirt(status symbol) is a probably unless I deem it hideous. A hat is a maybe if it’s flex fit and that’s a wrap. One exception was a hardware company who had these multi-tool ruler things and I took 3 of both the metric and sae version. I’m sure it has a name but it’s an L shaped ruler with holes to reference bolt size as well as different references cut into one side for thread measurements and confirming a match?
It’s basically a thread check’r with a bolt gauge built in. It’s not as exhaustive and a huge wall size gauge but they have worked well for me.
That said, I would take a free spitfire t shirt or hoodie even though I wouldn’t ever buy one. Same for most skate companies. Can always use it for a greasing circuit and or two and then toss it.
-
Grip’s gotta have a pot leaf on it somewhere or I won’t fuck with it.
-
I couldn't wear anything with the word "Supreme" on it, unless it was by Powell Peralta. If it was raining and they offered me a Supreme raincoat I would probably think about it so long I would already be soaked so it wouldn't matter.
I was gonna cool guy the thread but I see you’ve got it covered
-
would not want 99% of the shit thats out there
-
Still have a box of Rip Grip from my grom days in Santa Cruz.
-
Any board smaller than 8.5 or bigger than 9.75, or with a wheelbase smaller than 14.25, bigger than 14.5
Any wheels other than spitty f4's
Any thin vulcanised shoes
I'd probably rather keep paying for indy Ti's in 149-159 than skate thunder or ventures.
I know what I like and would rather pay for it than ride unfamiliar gear for free.
-
berle pro model
-
I think I'd feel stupid wearing any DC's if I'm being honest
-
I’m sure everything I wouldn’t skate has already been mentioned, although I definitely would invest in spray paint for shit graphics and colored grip. I know I know board and grip look like shit whatever but I don’t like emboldened logos.
-
Board rails
-
Powell Peralta fucking sucks too. They’re a corny Berrics tier brand
-
Nike SBs that aren’t dunks.
-
Any long ass decks, I like em short as possible. I won a free deck that was way too out of my length range and sold it at my local, no point in me setting it up and breaking it in just to know I want rid straight away.
-

So you would think twice about a jacket with a word on it before batting an eye at a piece of equipment that actually affects your skating? interesting.
-
Anything other than white wheels.
I can't stand wheels in crazy colors, especially wheels with swirls n shit. shit looks gross.
-
any wheel that isnt a spitty formula 4 :-X
-
Bronson bearings
-
anything Alien/Habitat
not my thing, i’d sell it

I was at a contest or some skate event in Pacific Beach down by the rollercoaster one time and they did a free product toss.
When they threw out a deck, the kid who caught it looked like the little feral kid from "Mad Max: The Road Warrior" with the boomerang or, like, the kid from "The Lost Boys" or some shit, just some short kid, with ratty, uneven long-hair, wearing a jean jacket vest with a bunch of pins and patches on it.
So he was struggling with three other boys over the deck. And once the feral kid managed to shake them of it, he got down in a crouch and pivoted in a circle to face each boy surrounding him, while protecting his new deck and making a loud growling/hissing noise at them.
Then what I assume was the feral kid's mom (I recollect her also having ratty long hair, just being a tad taller and chubbier) came up to get the feral kid's back and started barking that blah-blah-blah noise that the Tazmanian Devil cartoon character makes.
Once the three boys finally backed of and gave up, the feral kid and his mom just stormed of and got the fuck up out of there.
I probably wouldn't wear a Neff beanie.
-
Y'all trippin. Bring on the free shit

Man i loved this story, and you told it well, really painted a complete picture in my mind
-
Headwear I literally cannot wear hats or beanies. Aside from that nothing
-
So I was going to tell a story of how I got a yellow, quicksilver, flex fit hat, at a stop on the first Tony Hawk Skatepark Tour. It was a ugly hat, but I got it during the product toss and wore it during the demo. Not only was it a flex fit, but it had some mesh patches/squares in blue on the side. Even for early 00’s fashion, it was horrible. But I think the better story to tell, is that I remembered being in the episode they showed on espn. I didn’t think I’d be able to find it just now, but lo and behold, not only did I find it, but there’s a second or two with just my mug, my backwards yellow flex fit hat, and a big sign my brother had drawn up real quick, square and center on the screen. I had completely forgotten (or maybe purposely pushed it out of my memory) but we got ahold of some poster board and wrote some shit to try and get someone to notice us. I remember one saying something about markovich. I definitely do not remember what the one I was holding said...which was “Bam Kicks Ass!!!” I wish I could say I was just a dumb 13yr old, but I was 19 at the time. I feel so muddy. So so muddy.

Bones spfs.

Probably those Frog x Vans collab shoes with the lucky charms lookin things on the side. I like Frog and I like Vans, but I can't fuck with the Frog Vans.
-
any skate mental deck

Bones spfs.
YES
after i had a board stolen one time a friend lent me some trucks and wheels (bones spf). I pulled up to the spot with a slightly used deck, set up his bits, rolled about five metres across some slightly rough asphalt and felt like I was going to throw up. Those wheels feel like they're made from the same plastic as toothbrush handles

Tiny wheels (less than 50mm or so). As someone who skated tiny ass wheels in the 90s it blows my mind that they're making a comeback. They're terrible. They wear out so quick, flat spot so easily, you loose speed quickly and god forbid you hit a grain of sand with them.
Bridge bolts. Any other fellow dinosaurs remember these? It was mounting hardware that was connected by two metal pieces that went above your griptape that went from bolt to bolt. Your foot would get stuck on them every time you went to ollie or kick flip or whatever.

Primitive boards & clothes, Thunders, Autobahns, Globes, etc.
no hate, just pretty specific about what I'd skate and would rather give it to a kid that would appreciate it.

Idk throw some stuff my way and I'll let you know

I received a Crail mouse pad and a Anti-Hero car air freshener that I never used.

I could be down to my last penny with no board and no way to get a new board and be handed a new Welcome and I’d still pass.
-
Pretty much any shoe that's been the financial backbone of "core" brands. DC Court Graffik, Osiris Bronx and/or D3, Globe Chet Thomas, DVS Comanche, Etnies Fader, etc.
Kind of odd to think about, really.

They were utter shit. Some old dudes live them still, if you have any throw them on eBay.
Any free shit I don't like I give to charities. Lots of the collect whatever to give to kids in developing countries. I'm way to picky about my set-up and clothes and have an ok job so I buy exactly what I want.

Shake junt, palace, Nike SB, any wheels that aren’t spitfire, loophole or sml, plan b, DGK... actually my list should probably be, “companies I don’t mind giving my money to”; that would be a lot easier to narrow down

Plastic tooth brush handles is a perfect comparison. That being said OJ Elite 101s are even less appealing to me.

i once won a 'most kickflips in a row' Element competition and got a hat, deck and pair of shoes.
I gave the hat to a kid straight away and he was really stoked, sold the deck for cheap to another kid and had the shoes for like a year until i told some kid i would give them to him, i came the next day and he wasnt at the park so i left them in the bushes near by and told him where to find them, when he came they werent there. so i think i can safely say i would not use Element gear even if it was given to me, and i once got a free pair of DC Pure in gold/cracked brown and skated it so my bar is pretty low.

I think it really comes down to the graphic for me
All decks come from a few woodshops so at least you can support those guys or think of it that way
Id sand off graphics from DGK, Blind, most Almost graphics, Element, Rip N Dip, etc but still skate the decks
I just wouldn't touch companies that press their own boards (does Rip N Dip fall into this category?) or just have way too much of a kook image like BRYT, Revive, Braille like everyone else has said
I can get down with kid focused companies for kids, but not ones that their aim is to profit off of you longterm and keep you away from the "traditional' skate industry as you grow out of childhood

Wouldnt touch anything from frog, pizza, rip n dip, welcome, shake junt, dgk or any other blue haired weirdo brand. If its a dipped board forget about it regardless of woodshop. Same goes with colored trucks. Ew. Dont even get me started on wheels other than white. Id litteraly throw away wheels by pig, or any other goofy half baked brand. I fuck with bones bushings and bearings but id give away their wheels. They ALL feel like 110 duro. Like skating legit plastic. Cupsole shoes or its getting sold.
-
Jart Decks were always to fragile, phillips hardware, clothes with huge brand logos like all the trashers hoodies, any sort of colured or printed/designed griptape.
-
i'd probably use anything if i needed it. if i wouldn't like the brand or graphic i would sand it down or spray paint it. if i had to skate a pair of cariumas i'd cut off the ugly ass logo. as long as the stuff works.
in terms of griptape wars, i dislike jessup, so i don't like it when i get that for free with a board. i often change it out midway for mob or something similar gritty. i don't know if we get bad batches of jessup only, but for the last ten years i haven't had a jessup sheet that wouldn't just straight up flake up and off the board. it's like the glue sucks now and the sheets are always super brittle. it also feels like weeks old grip. i can see how some like that but i'd rather sand down a sheet of mob or have a bit too much grip than too little.
anyways, i'd take any free product i could get, you can always hand it down later on to someone who needs stuff.
-
I wouldn’t skate cruiser wheels.
Feel like every socal skatepark has one blonde dogtown superfan who rides a normal skate with cruiser wheels and tries so fucking hard.
Maybe i wouldn’t skate weirdo blogger brands or anything thats not my size but brand wise i really don’t care unless someone gave me a rick and morty or starwars primitive deck. Idk though i’ve never gotten anything for free tho

Nike, cariuma, supreme, palace.
For the record I don't loathe palace like the others. I think what they are doing is cool. I just wouldn't be caught dead in the clothes.
I want to be open minded but I have a hard time liking anything but spitfires.
Honestly I'd take any deck if it's close to the right size. I'd just spray over it
-
Cariumas, what are you thinking with that huge logo? Just waiting for the brand to go under soon.
Colored/graphic grip tapes.... tried a few brands over the years but all feel subpar to classic black griptape; maybe it’s me but I feel the grain it’s too different

it's just more practical to carry and Allen tool that fits all of the Allen hardware. Most screwdrivers that you pick up have different Philips tips which may or may not fit skateboard hardware how it's supposed to. Phillips is oftentimes much more stripped out, at least from my experience working at multiple skate shops over the years.

I’m not very picky with stuff. I skated and enjoyed about every wheel brand under the sun, almost all the major truck brands, and will skate any board that’s 8.5. I love giving new/smaller brands some love as much as possible.
The only exception is grip. I skate MOB, period. I don’t care what graphic is on it, what color, clear, black, whatever. I have given away multiple sheets of brand new grip and then turned around that same day to get Mob. I think I’ve had like 4 decks in my entire life that weren’t Mob. I’m sure other grip brands are just fine but it’s such a strong mental thing at this point that I just roll with it no questions asked.
-

I'm the same way with Jessup. Can't ride anything else. It's gotta be black, though, can't ride coloured grip.

I got a few free boxes of DGK shit during the "I <3 Haters" phase they were going through, and I mean they printed that shit on everything. I have hats, wrist bands, t-shirts, and decks that I received from it, and I only skated the decks because I could sticker them up.
I'm not gonna ride anything from any other truck company that isn't Indy/ Venture/ Thunder. I used to get free trucks a long time ago from a particular company (not gonna name them bc they were great to me, but no one on the team rode the actual trucks), and I'd just give that shit to my friends. It was a wack truck company that had some pretty awesome riders on their team, and the team guys I met always had Indy's for the most part.
I'm not gonna wear anything from DC, regardless of how nostalgic I get over a pair of Lynx/ Kalis 1/ Williams 1 shoes. This is coming from someone who wears Es retro models that aren't 100% true to form (weird sole/ missing airbags/ etc) which kills me bc it's my only gripe with what they're doing right now, and DC did a great job reissuing their shit 1:1. It has nothing to do with the quality of their products and everything to do with their branding image, I don't need someone looking at me wearing Lynx and associate me with Ridiculousness, energy drinks, or fat 12 year old kids who scream the n-word at strangers while playing Call of Duty. Same goes for Etnies, Es is fine in my book bc they're exclusively marketed towards skateboarding.
No Lakai footwear. I don't care how cool those Cambridge shoes look, I'm not wearing something I know is gonna suck in quality on my feet. It's a cool Adidas ripoff, but I could just buy the Adidas version without having to worry about QC issues. I mean I won't buy Adidas shoes bc I don't like the way they fit my feet, but I'm sure you understand what I'm getting at. It sucks too, it's the only thing keeping me from supporting a core brand that isn't all that offensive.
No shaped decks, no weird sizes. I'll take any deck between 7.8-8.12 and ride it just fine knowing I can sand off/ sticker up lame graphics. There's some brands that I've come around to actually liking, like I'd ride some Pizza shit without covering up the graphic since I liked Raheim Robinson's Etherium part & Chase Webb is nowhere to be found.
I won't ride any bearings besides Bones Swiss. I don't care how good they are, if they're any other brand there's no way I'll feel right rolling around. It can be the regular Swiss, the six ball, ceramics, idc really, they just need to be Swiss for me to rock with them. This is the only constant I've kept with my set up during the majority of my time skateboarding, and it's never let me down.
I'm not picky with griptape, as long as it's straight black and doesn't have some stupid logo cutout or graphic I'm perfectly fine with whatever I get. I could never ride Shake Junt grip or whatever, shit like that ruins footage. Same goes for wheels, they need to be all white and 99-101A but I can deal with pretty much whatever.
I think that's basically it for me, if I come up with anything else I'll keep you guys posted.

Jart Decks were always to fragile, phillips hardware, clothes with huge brand logos like all the trashers hoodies, any sort of colured or printed/designed griptape.
did a phillips bolt kill your dog or something? someone explain phillips hate
it's just more practical to carry and Allen tool that fits all of the Allen hardware. Most screwdrivers that you pick up have different Philips tips which may or may not fit skateboard hardware how it's supposed to. Phillips is oftentimes much more stripped out, at least from my experience working at multiple skate shops over the years.
Also I associate Phillips head to those toy boards they sell at supermarket, looks wrong to me.

word, thanks for an actual answer haha. using the wrong phillips bit could strip the shit out of the bolts, whereas using the wrong allen wrench won't do much

Entirely hypothetical, I know, but this thread reeks of entitlement.
Back in the day, fir sure. Now? I have income, I have preferences, and I don’t mind buying a couple decks a year. Or one a year when it’s not a global pandemic. I certainly don’t need to stock up on anything because I am not good enough to really care about shapes too much, as long as it’s in that 8.25-8.5 zone I’ll figure it out enough to use it poorly. So I wouldn’t take any deck not that size because someone who could benefit from it should have it. What is an 8 inch deck going to do for me? Not going to skate it, not going to bother selling it, so give it to someone else. My trucks are too wide for that and I’m never going to wear these things out. Although covid changed that a little, so I will need new trucks in 2 years instead of 4 or 5, big deal.
So it might not be entitlement, it could be selflessness.

Had a friend try to set me up with a company called Chemical Storm, even gave me a set of wheels I've never used. Couldn't do it though, the idea of potentially repping a board with my name on it plus wearing/riding shit with skulls and flames as the graphics (their main go to) as a not-so-great skater seemed pretty wack to me
-
Aftermarket bushings and riser pads. Had some thrown in for free on separate occasions for spending above a threshold or something and it just seems like too much hassle to switch up a setup just because the shits were free.

Anybody mention Gring King trucks yet?
For sure would NOT fuxx with them.
However, I do miss the cordial convo & energetic endorsements of @GK Satoshi.

Many shops include free grip with some sort of shop logo with their decks. Have thrown that aside for Jessup many times. Always feel like a fool for forking over extra cash for what is essentially the same product, but it is what it is.

if it wasn't for free die-cut grip, all of my boards would get the blacktop treatment. keeps me creative. plus its usually Jessup anyways.

Am I to infer that in Southern California (or anywhere that doesn’t really have winter) the streets are smooth enough that you can efficiently skate long distances without cruiser wheels? Or is this a park only character?

Do you realize that changing out your bushings is by far the easiest and least time consuming thing you could do to your skateboard?

Yeah I suppose it's not really the process of swapping out the parts. More so a question of: do you want to alter how your setup responds and performs, for free? And the answer is no, not really. :P

Aftermarket bushings and riser pads. Had some thrown in for free on separate occasions for spending above a threshold or something and it just seems like too much hassle to switch up a setup just because the shits were free.
Do you realize that changing out your bushings is by far the easiest and least time consuming thing you could do to your skateboard?
Yeah I suppose it's not really the process of swapping out the parts. More so a question of: do you want to alter how your setup responds and performs, for free? And the answer is no, not really. :P
Ah I see what you’re saying

You’re all getting warmer by process of elimination. I’ll stop replying once someone finally gets it as a silent affirmation, but this thread has reminded me that there are way more truck companies than the big there that somehow survived recessions & popularity declines over the last few decades...

Yea i went on the riptide site for a second and developed a brand new gear madness. Running your trucks stock is freeing, even if it could be better in a different way

This was a good read, but wow some people's lists are long. And how does a truck company exist and not one person on the team rides them? It's not like bearings. That's crazy. What did they do put stickers on the trucks

I wouldn’t skate cruiser wheels.
Feel like every socal skatepark has one blonde dogtown superfan who rides a normal skate with cruiser wheels and tries so fucking hard.
Am I to infer that in Southern California (or anywhere that doesn’t really have winter) the streets are smooth enough that you can efficiently skate long distances without cruiser wheels? Or is this a park only character?
This is absolutely the case, and it's probably why the industry pushed everyone onto 53mm 101a wheels for so long. Now we can recognize that people outside of SoCal skate and suddenly all the biggest makers are pushing a larger and softer wheel for the rest of the world, living near to or north of the 40° parallel
Hahahaha that makes sense, because 53mm 101a in the north is usually a fucking exhausting, slow, numb-your-legs-with-vibrations, death crawl. With the exception of urban centres that are well maintained and/or sheltered by buildings.
