Title: The Shorts Thread
Post by: Big Baby Jesus on May 28, 2021, 06:15:28 AM
Been looking for some good shorts lately for skating and just wearing too. I've been looking at some volley shorts a la Lucas Puig but their is so many choices. Any recommendations?

I’ll second the jorts recommendation. I also like Passport Workers shorts and Patagonia Baggies.

Nike ACG shorts are nice if you can find em on sale. +1 for Patagonia Baggies as well. Jorts are fine too.

You’ll prolly never see um but all my shorts are made by Woolrich. My local department store has had an account with them for 40 years. If you see them try them on. I have always sworn by Woolrich. So comfortable and cut baggy. Last long too. I got 3 pair on ice. I buy 5 at a time and kill um skateboarding.

jorts are the ones, walmart got the cheap ones but you can find cheap levis 550/560 shorts on ebay or depop if you try hard enough

I have a pair of vintage Levis 550 shorts and Levis Silvertab shorts. If you're into the jorts, I would highly recommend either of them. Silvertab jorts can still be found on eBay for $30-40, which is impossible for their jeans.

i like the stuff at rei. it's hot here and they have really light fabrics and a lot of the shorts are ATV with hidden draw strings so you can take them swimming too.

whatever fabric these are made out of is the stuff i really like.

I’ll second these. I bought them to wear at work, but skate in them too. I’m currently wearing a pair of Prana’s that I got at REI. They’re pretty pricey, but they stretch and are abrasion resistant

Semi off topic. Looking for something like the bans av corvina shorts. Kinda faux cut offs.
I think they stopped making them and seem to only have one color.

Any hook ups on discount? 50$ is a little steep.

Second this. Got the O’Neill version and it’s like skating in a swim suit but has elastane flex too. Only downside is mine are almost the exact fit and grey color as Beavis shorts from beavis and butthead!

those prana's look sick. thats definitely the kind of fabric i've gotten pretty heavily into and i like really basic shorts. i like the idea of abrasion resistant because they are kind of pricey and i always thought the patagonia ones would wear out first ass slide but i've had them like 3 years now and there is only one little hole in one that is so small it doesn't matter.

These are actually some good athletic shorts and I mostly use them for disc golf. They work for skating too. Tillys had them for like $20.

My go to skate shorts are the '67 Dickies shorts that have the classic Dickies feel with a button fly https://www.dickies.com/shorts/dickies-67-11-slim-flex-twill-work-shorts/WR894.html?dwvar_WR894_color=DS#sz=24&start=1

Damn that's a great price! I can't do the '67's I'm heavier and need a relaxed/loose fit. But yeah these ones even being regular fit are pretty loose and comfy although I did order a waist size up and use a belt. They feel amazing I now have like 7 pairs all navy/black only cause I love darker colors. Shalom

Frog swim shorts my go to. Cheap Russel or Champion mesh shorts cool. Nike SB gym shorts good, the thick double layered ones. As FA adidas shorts or straight FA but they’ve been cutting their mesh shorts way baggier. As for jorts, they feel good but rub the back of leg or catch my knee funny.

If you're cool with used/vintage stuff, try looking for Levi's Silvertab shorts on eBay. At least in the US, you can easily find them for $30-40 in most sizes. I have two pairs that I got used online that are super nice and both a baggy/loose fit like how I imagine Butter Goods makes them.

Love thrifting older tech hiking / bathing suit type shorts and if they have a liner , just cut them out . Found some good stuff over the years from Columbia , North face , Nike , Patagonia , etc .

I got some mesh champion shorts from orchard skate shop that are a little too small.

I’ve also got some sick tech shorts on sale from Bronze as well as some stretchy waisted “work shorts” from them .

Grabbed some shorts from Dickies while they were on a really solid sale. It's annoying how often they change their pants SKUs, but these were the three I narrowed things down to.

I'm really liking these: https://www.dickies.com/utility-shorts/cooling-utility-shorts-11/SR601.html?dwvar_SR601_color=BK They sort of feel like swim trunks but more durable. At 5oz fabric, it's the lightest weight shorts I've seen from them. Has button up velcro back pockets which is nice while skating and taking transit. Phone stays in the front pocket just fine. A good balance of light weight but not too light weight for keeping your phone in place. Definitely recommend them if you don't mind something sliiiiightly reminiscent of swim trunks. They have been great during super hot days... They also have a flex waist version, but it looks like it might be a latch fly, so I got these.

The "skateboarding" shorts are pretty alright... Very similar to a discontinued pair I loved from them. A bit heavier/thicker though. Even though it says slim fit, they don't really feel slim fit to me. Worth getting on sale. https://www.dickies.com/shorts/dickies-skateboarding-slim-fit-shorts-11/WRSK94.html even their images show that they aren't really slim fit... Strange...

Haven't gotten to skate in these yet but they are definitely heavier than the other two, so be aware of that. Probably not going to want to skate in these as often as the other two due to that... But they're mostly cotton so they're comfortable: https://www.dickies.com/shorts/dickies-x-series-active-waist-shorts-11/XR832.html

All three of these have a standard button fly, are flexible, and have solid pockets, so they're definitely worth looking into.

Anyone else find any good shorts for skating?

Girls like big calves. Find some shorts you like. Only boomers shame other people about that stuff. Younger Gen Y and Z don't fuck with that... I believe in you getting over those barriers.

I used to never skate in shorts, and now I do it whenever weather requires it... It's a lot easier to skate in shorts, for real.

I can’t get myself to wear jorts idk man. I have a pair of vintage Tommy Hilfiger jorts and I just can’t ever get myself to wear them out in public.

Uniqlo shorts are my personal favorite right now. I get the easy fit shorts they are kinda like a lighter sweatpants material. I wouldn’t say they are incredibly baggy but they are definitely a good looseness and a decent length too.

Any fellow tall pals got recommendations for longer shorts?
Title: Re: The Shorts Thread

Jorts gotta be washed colors. Which is why Polar is the best. Washed black jorts I think is rather safe bet.
Other then that, anything oat/off white and olive green is very good colors.

I'm 6,3 and run size M Polar Big Boys, fits down to right above my knee

I guess its a classic case of wanting what you don't have. I would gladly have some chicken legs instead. Mine are like upside down flesh triangles with shoes at the end. Despite it all, I will try wearing some shorts around the house to warm up my mind to the idea of wearing them full time during summer. I know it feels way better but I also have to be psyched on looking down in order to skate as well as I can.

PSA to anyone looking at Quasi shorts: don't skate in them.

These are the Quasi murmur shorts. They ripped at the crotch bad while I was skating today, literally from just bending down. I've skated in them many times before so this rip felt super random.

Thankfully there was a skate shop nearby (shout-out Anchor Skate Supply in St Pete FL, you guys are awesome), and thank the higher powers that I didn't run into any kids while getting to the shop.

https://www.nike.com/t/sportswear-club-mens-graphic-shorts-hQgvng/BV2721-386

Been getting them for $20 at the Nike store.

Back pocket snaps shut.

Baggy fit on point. Deep front pockets—cell phone doesn’t peek out.

Material thick enough so no one sees your dick flapping around. Thin shorts make me feel like I’m wearing underwear.

Get um!

I pretty much only skate in carhartt cargo shorts, even in winter. Surprised they haven't been mentioned itt yet. Super durable. I can't wear gym shorts or that kind of thing to skate in, I feel too much air going around my legs because they are so lightweight and it throws me off

Been running these lately and feel great when skating (also been wanting to get my Lucas Puig on). Big downside is not being able to hold things in pockets when being active though.

As a fellow fan of the cult of Puig.
Someone should make shorts like this with actual pockets (that zip shut).

Reviving cuz this is 2 years old and almost Summer- what's good in the world of shorts these days?

I'm taller and have tried Patagonia and Prana but want something that's not athletic. I got some Carhartt shorts last summer I lost and I remember having to order 3 of the same size and they all fit different so I don't want that hassle again. I like stuff to be sorta loose but not Big Boy. A solid dad short.

I dig these Levis shorts, loose enough but not totally baggy. very comfy and the elastic waist is pretty great.

As much as I hate buying from places like H&M, their shorts are cheap and pretty reliable. I’ve looked into the Patagonia baggies too but just can’t justify spending $60 on shorts. Gonna try my luck with some Carhartt shorts this year and hope they work out.

Patagonia Baggies. Just copped a pair and they’re legit. Seemingly the do it all short; deep ass pockets, snap secured back pocket and fit TTS. Some real adult shit.

The 5 inch is Puig territory. Went with the 7 inch for flexibility. Worth the cash, even better if you can get from worn wear.

Just ordered 3 of these. I really like the light, stretchy quick dry shorts that you can wear to a nice dinner or to the beach/lake. I haven't tried these but they look right and being surf brand guessing that's the use they are targeting. 55 but I'll wear good shorts for like 5+ years.

I wear a uniform at work and you get two pairs of shorts, I'm the only one at work that gets them and I only wear them when I'm skating. Every new contract they forget that I have shorts so I never turn them in an have too many pairs. I highly recommend getting a job where they provide a uniform and socks, I hardly have to do laundry

I love patagonia baggies. I wear them all summer and in the house year round. I buy the bathing suit ones and cut the net out. One time I found a bathing suit pair without a net and I was stoked. I thought that they were mediums because the price tag had a m on them and then when I got home I saw the tag in the shorts had a xl on the tag. Turned out that m was just an upside down w and I bought woman’s bathing suit cover up patagonia baggie shorts. Here’s a clip from 2 years ago of a quick session skating them in the nj august heat for 15 minutes before I went back in the ac in the woman’s baggies.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FFtT20OMHK4

Right now I’m wearing patagonia men’s like hiking or atheletic shorts with the tights build in. They’re made stretchy and comfy. Don’t look like baggies but a great comfy pair of shorts. Can’t go wrong with baggies. They must have went up in price though from what people are saying in this thread.

Real talk I love shorts. I own mad shorts. Dime leisure shorts are sick - I really like those. When it’s hot you need to stay cool. I don’t understand the hating of short. My dad wears sweat shorts all year round.

Dickies Jackson pretty sick too.

I skated the 'skate' cargos last season, still have them/skate them, but don't really care for the fit (too long, too high wasted and the outer/sides stick out). But they were on sale (and couldn't return them). These look more tame.

Volcom used to be my goto but they changed their sizing/cut recently (longer).

Both the pants and shorts are HUUUUUGE when it comes to leg openings and thigh fit (pants drape well but the stack is much too wide for me past the knee) and normal with regards to waist; I had to return the Larges for mediums and they are just a tad snug in the waist (the material is fucking amazing tho). Last dickies shorts I wore were the skate cargos and they were about the same (if not a bit better fitting all around). $75 for 'skate' shorts is  fucking ridiculous ...

There are two versions, numbered sizing (old) and letter sizing (new) - my experience is with the lettered sizing.

My goto this season (since they don't make the good hybrids anymore)

This is the best option even though XXXS is 24”-26”. People said that the Cromer fits 2” larger than the tag. However, they either fixed it or my pair has the wrong tag. My Butter Goods jeans in 36 are looser in the waist than the 38 Cromer jean shorts, from the summer drop. If buying them physically is an option, your friend should try them out.

Carhartt WIP has Brandon and Landon which are jean shorts that retail for 80-100 euros, but the smallest size would be a little over 30” waist.

Passport denim shorts could be an option but the smallest size they have is 26. People say that they fit 2” larger than the tag but I would say that my 36 Workers Club denim shorts fit like 37”.

I haven’t found any European shops with these, but 24”/25”/26” would be closer in size to the XXXS Big Boys compared to the other options:

I’m sorta with everyone here as I’m currently wearing baggies. Baggies for almost everything and I’ll skate in lululemon chino shorts because they are super stretchy and end up not stinking too bad after a session. Haven’t tried skating in baggies though. The Patagonia traveler chino shorts are super stretchy too but unless you get them on sale are way over priced

GX1000 Double Knee Corduroy Shorts fit a little over TTS with some extra room if you eat or drink too much. Polar Big Boy shorts feel like straight fit compared to these. I was a bit worried when I first got them because I could fit both legs in a single leg of the shorts, but they shrunk after going through the washer dryer. If you get them for $50 or under, they’re totally worth it.

Dime Carpenter Denim Shorts are good, but they’re a bit pricey. They fit the best out of all my shorts but the price tag is steep.

Polar Surf Shorts are good but I only skate in them if I know I’m going to be drenched in sweat.

Looking for light shorts with a deck fit similar to nike sb kearny lets say.... That are light material for skating in the heat. ANy ideas?

Volcom Veeco Transit Shorts from 2023, handfull still around. Seriously the best shorts every. IF you can find them...

Hybrid shorts so you could swim in them, they are super lightweight, pockets EVERYWHERE (small stash zippered ones too) and decently heavy elastic key loop.

agreed with the cut off carhartts
currently rocking mesh mitchell and ness ball shorts
bulls retro pair but would rather have the pinstripes

Retro NBA shorts are cool, but I had two pairs of those M&N ones and the team logo patch faded and eventually peeled off of both of them. There's no embroidery or stitching on them - it's just a screen printed(?) graphic on a cloth patch that's glued to the shorts. They'd probably survive if you don't put them in the dryer, but I'm not hanging up a pair of mesh basketball shorts to dry.

Not very shorts outside of really hot periods and the Polar Surf Shorts are really nice and light.
Often at - 30% towards my home.

Besides, I don't really understand the delirium of jeans shorts because it's still quite hot.

Good to know - looks like it's the 'Swingman' ones that suck.

I've got a few pairs of the Dickies cooling shorts that I really like.

I typically like Volcom pants and their relaxed versions fit me perfectly and seem to last really well. But their lines are so inconsistent to find the same pair again so I haven’t really got any of their shorts besides swimming trunks. They are also inconsistently priced.
I ended up finding these on Amazon: Wrangler Authentics Men's Performance Comfort Flex Cargo Short
They fit great, really comfortable and I prefer them whenever it’s shorts weather time. Skate in them all summer and they hold up and the slight stretch means I never worry about ripping if my legs get into some odd position. I already got a few in different colors and will keep getting them in the future unless I find something better. I doubt it less than the $30 these cost though. I recently also tried some pants from the same line and I don’t think they are as good as my Volcom pants but they are way cheaper and I’m pretty sure I can easily get the exact same style every time I want. Will see if they last as well but so far, so good.

Good call, should have put a reference originally.

They're the ones in the clip at 24:20 here. Looking at the belt maybe they are gramicci?

Word

Hard to tell but defo looks like gramicci, but there's a lotta gramicci-style shorts out there

Edit

Per his Instagram story, I'm almost 100% certain they're gramicci shorts

Appreciate that! Possibly the ridge shorts it seems. What did he post on the story? I don’t have insta to check

They're prolly just the classic G-shorts
100% not Ridge shorts

Just some skatepark clips in another color of the same ones

Reminds me I still have a few pairs of old made in USA g-shorts and pants I need to get around to selling
