i've seen various comments all over slap that logan, cyrus, and max are starting a new company called 'Limosine' under FA. is this true? who has the info - i haven't seen any sources or cryptic instagrams hinting at this.
-
its not under FA.
-
There's a Limosine (https://www.instagram.com/limosine__/) [sic] account on Instagram, and someone showed a photo of a Limosine Skateboards ad featuring Max from an upcoming magazine. But that's the extent of what I know

The video will be christmas miracle
-
I definitely see this company giving Life Extention a run for its money.
Intro clips should be edited to Staind or Limp Bizkit.
-
Hearse Skateboard Co. - "boards you will die for."
-
I'm so down for this, Cyrus is the most underrated out of all of these guys, his part in Johns vid is incredible.
-
Wasn't there supposed to be a third company under FA called nursing home or funeral home?
-
Fully willing to believe that Logan Lara really thinks limousine is spelled like that
-

That was the rumor, but I think the FA riders shot down a lot of the people Austyn wanted to put on (Jake Anderson and Mason Silva) and it fell apart.

I already posted this, but it might still be relevant. I have one of the boards. Sort of. The graphic is spray painted over a 917 graphic. Someone left a stack of them at a spot I frequently skate in LA

as much as i do like the show the guest has to be someone im at least somewhat interested in hearing about otherwise i just zone out due to the hosts being so dry. lot29, acet, samva, hert, andrew wilson eps are all super good

Happy Cyrus and whoever else is involved are able to get their creative vision out to the world. Great group of skaters, homie energy, NYC spots, best brand in the making. if i were to buy a new deck and had to choose between for example fa, polar, real and limosine i'd get the limosine because all are bbs boards and limosine has my favorite skaters out of all those brands. i couldn't care less about the graphic as long as it isn't downright bad, and all of the boards posted in this thread are ok. my fav one is the painted over 917 but fuck it i could skate any of these, especially the one that's the max palmer pro model

Graphics are cool. I think it has a unique aesthetic, but every brand grows into its identity as it progresses. It’s always easiest to judge a company at its start, and as mentioned, it’s only like a day old. I feel it has potential though; maybe we’ll see when the video releases.

Cyrus and Max killed it as always. Nelly is the fuckin truth. Hugo stole the show for me though, dude fucking rips.
I will say, my only critique is that for a team that was bummed on their lack of creative control at 917, I really expected a strong brand identity/aesthetic in the video. Was some super good skating and filming, but nothing about it screamed "Limosine".
All in all phenomenal video though.

Cyrus is great, that last trick was pretty rad, and I'm glad they didn't abuse that zoom in/out filming style too much. However, the overexposure thing is played out, that music was fucking atrocious, and nothing about that made me want to buy a board with a washed out mustang covered in barbed wire.
-
Holy fucking shit these graphics suck. Haven’t watched the vid yet, it’s probably good though lol.
Edit- Watched the vid, solid stuff. Not a real exciting brand though, seems a bit more concerned with saying “fuck 917” than it does with making something unique. Which is disappointing because good “fuck you” energy has made classics like Video Days, Baker Bootleg, and Goldfish.
We won’t see this brand 2 years from now.

Now, THAT was a fuckin' skate video. Will be trying a board once my local gets them.
-
Cyrus and Max killed it as always.
I think thay had more problems with the board graphics and overall organisation than with the video. Both of the 917 vids were done by Logan Lara I think so makes sense that it feels like 917 third video.

Thats the thing I don’t get. This brand won’t last and doesn’t seem like it’s trying to. I’d rather see max and Cyrus go to brands that could produce that classic video part. Cyrus on something like Real would bring some spark back to the brand. Instead there’s this.

I would say based on what new brands have succeeded and failed over the past decade the common denominator is you either have to knock it out the park with the brand identity, or be Paul Rodriguez.
-
What's the chances any of them being 14wb.
14.13 on the 8.25 is the smallest it gets
-
What's the chances any of them being 14wb.
wb's are on the website, no 14s, but 14.13 is probably short enough for me
-
I back it but they sure are gonna have a lot of kids on skateboards looking like Hyundai enthusiasts or something with that logo
-
One of the last 917 drops with max and Cyrus signature slick boards - the cyber series maybe? - had shapes with that same14.129 wb and sub-32 length. I copped both dudes' decks and were some of the best I've ridden this past year.

lol, so many bad takes in this thread but this one might be the worst.
i loved the vid and am hyped to see where this brand goes. love AO but him being so scatterbrained is what made 917 frustrating at times, think this will do better without him. the max part + song combo got me a lil emotional ngl.
-

it's just a group of friends starting a brand and filming skateboard tricks.

Feels like 917 2.0 to me and not at all in a bad way. If it enables more footage and more frequent product drops then I fail to see something to hate on. There are a lot of brands that don't cater to what I like, but they all have their place and it's kinda dumb to expect every new brand that people are excited about to be exactly what you want.

Music wasn't good, but the skating sure was.
Max and Hugo's last tricks, Cyrus' manual tricks, Genesis' switch three shove all stood out.
Wanted more Loreth and Callender footage. Hopefully in the future.
-
The L logo looks like a middle schooler tried to make a logo for his imaginary metal band based off the logo on his moms Lexus. Big fan of the team I just hope they change the logo to the Peace Sign on the DVD
-
Graphics are meh and I can’t unsee the Yoshi egg in the logo. The video was just okay. I hate to say it, because I really like his style, but Cyrus needs to change it up. The back smith, back tail, fakie manny thing is getting a little stale. I was more excited to see him do a switch tre on flat rather than another steezy back tail backside flip. Max however, still manages to amaze me with his ability. He’s still pushing himself and learning new tricks (backside flip switch manny 180 out shocked me) whereas Cyrus seems stuck in the same tricks. Gimme a switch back tail or a back noseblunt or a front crook Cyrus! I don’t care about the rest of the team. Aaron Loreth seems like Max-lite, he did some good manuals tho. They are really doing a big favor to that dude with the second part and that gensis dude by starting a brand for them. They didn’t really match the skill of Cyrus and Max. Wouldn’t count on this brand lasting either.

I thought the video was great. Even though I'm not floored by the first round of graphics, I'm looking forward to see where they go with things (the Cyrus one is good imo). Too early to call if it'll last or not, but I could see them easily filling the space left by 917.

Agree. All these old-man takes are just outdated (and I'm a 90s wash up myself). New brands are the lifeblood of skating. And not just constantly resuscitating legacy brands to try to stay relevant. The problem isn't too many new brands, the problem is too many old brands.
Always excited to see a group of skaters try to start up something new, and starting out with a DVD release is just great. I'm too old to get the graphics, and no sub 8.25 so I'm out, but I hope it does well. And who cares how long it lasts! I enjoyed the video, good luck to them.

for me, its cause the video sucked. if u treat it as full length u gotta make certain parts pop with contrast, it was like a 9 min same theme edit, think how well cheffed the best videos are, they got flavorfull parts in em too. whip u a good batch n that can carry a brand for years. this taste like microwave nuggets.

A bit dismissive to think that people are just hating on it because it’s new. I think these are genuinely unoriginal designs in the same way that 3D, Business & Company, and Numbers had weak early graphics that eventually bricked their companies. Whereas Polar, FA, Palace, Magenta, Quasi all had interesting product out the gate. Even more jarring when you consider 917 broke up over everyone on the team complaining about the direction.
I don’t think the problem is that there’s too many new companies either. There’s just an over saturation of deck brands to the point that anything new has to at least look different than everything else. I think Frog has corny graphics, but they’re the only company that looks like that so they have real staying power. Someone tell me one thing Limousine is bringing to the table that I can’t get elsewhere?
But I have the reiterate that I thought the video was good, and it is a basis to build on. I like the dudes, I just don’t think this is going anywhere.

You're putting way too much stock into the image of the company, when it's literally just friends out skating and having fun. The main reasons why those companies bricked is purely on the people behind the companies, and their various reasons for not wanting to run a company. Here, we have an actual organic team, that hang out together, and skate, everything has come together in a more natural way. Also you're re-writing history if you think all those companies came out firing.
Limosine will do really well. Bookmark it.

That has a very nineties feel to it. Also somehow reminds me of old techno/trance visuals.
-
the art direction itself is very 90s. lots of 90s films like Batman or casper the ghost used this black/blue bright white lights from behind style so did plenty of old vhs covers or techno and house vinyls from that era.
would be cool if they went along with that and used in a cohesive way
-
I think they fucked up a pretty good thing by leaving Alex to do their own lower-concept version of 917. Now there's just no there there. The 917 team was a little bit excessive and incohesive before, now this team is equally so but with less star power. It lacks gravitas. It's like a film sequel without the original lead. The name, logos, board graphics, musical selection have all fallen off to different degrees. Nothing about it is more interesting or exciting, it's just less interesting and less exciting.
-
The art Cyrus did for Max’s board even reminds me a little bit of their other cover art.

Here’s a random ass BMW shirt they made and I could see lots of skate brands putting out something similar now
https://www.depop.com/products/jaihoover-candy-says-band-bmw-longsleeve/
I’m not saying they ripped em off, theres lots of other cultural reference points here. The DVD cover gives off Dystopia vibes (also those mashed up rap album covers from No Limit) There’s a 90s revival across all of culture and these guys, along with bands like Candy, are just hitting on lots of notes from hardcore, industrial music, and techno like others have mentioned.

also reminds me of the aesthetic a lot of the hyperpop scene has been using, especially since they used a SOPHIE song during one of the homie montage parts in the middle of the video. Shit looks kind of like what SOPHIE was doing when she released PRODUCT, Charli's POP 2 aesthetic, and the more A.G. Cook influenced shit on PC Music too.

Haven't had time to watch the video yet, but based on the first product drop and general aesthetic, I really hope Andrew Wilson and Stu Kirst get on. They're both into hardcore and would fit in perfectly, especially since they seem to be part of that friend group. I feel like they're too talented, entertaining and relatively marketable to not have board sponsors.
-
I was prepared to say that I just don't like it. But reading this past page makes me think I just don't get it. I have no context or reference for any of what everyone is talking about re hardcore, SOPHIE, techno, hypepop, or whatever else. Maybe if I did I would think the brand looked cooler but, as it were, I don't. Good luck to them though, cool crew no doubt.
-
I don't think it's bad but it's not good either. Kinda just feels like everything else out there now (even though they kinda pioneered this). Solid effort though.
-
I thought the video was great.
The whole brand image seems very in line with what’s been going on in hardcore for a while now. Reminds me a lot of the band Candy in particular. Lots of that crew, Cyrus in particular, seems tapped into all that.
As someone who was deep into hardcore but fell out of it more than ten years ago, fill me in on what's been going on

It's been over 4 hours and I'm still hard

The girl rips. And is cute. I'll take my kook now. Hardcore is really awful. Reminds me of snowboarders.

Cyrus' skating is so good. Graphics and brand feel a little weak and thrown together.

Before they came out, I told myself I was gonna buy a max board but now that I saw the graphic, I unfortunately saved $86 (shipped) but did buy a shirt and dvd bc I still wanna support those dudes. The video was awesome and I love everyone involved, I think we were all left wanting more, one way or another. I personally just woulda liked there to be an intro and credits with some weird funny b-roll. Excited to see what their future brings.
-
I watched the video and liked it. I’d skate a deck. Why not?
-
idk how to describe it but I love the way Aaron Loreth skates. Every trick is like a puzzle piece fitting into a hole everything he does is so smooth

Hell they should put Stu on just to do the graphics. The small run he did for Baker looks way better than anything from this drop or the last 917 drop.

Yeah this outfit could go either of two ways. If those are headphones he's off to mow his lawn, if that's a dog collar he's in the queue for Berghain

Im relatively new to slap but I don't doubt that thats true. I think b roll can be really hit or miss for sure but if were talking about limosine, I think that logans past 917 b roll (minus the excessive drinking) has been interesting at least to me and I might've expected a similar amount of it this time.

Ah God I feel old. I now know how Kalis and co felt hating on slim pants and vans etc. The horrible stuff of my teens is being brought back. Was that a Gameboy advance? I guess those were probably ok
-

Agreed. Just more (ironically?) terribly graphics, a la 917. I love Cyrus and Max enough that I might have bought the bullet if I were buying one from a shop for $60 plus grip, but for $70 with $15 shipping and another few bucks for grip? I just cannot justify that.
How long until people start skating Flame Boy decks again? It's gonna be the trend for summer '22.

Very stoked on this whole endeavor. Not one negative thing to say from me. Pretty serious to drop with a DVD and a full range of goodies. and big agree that Andrew Wilson should get on. And Nikita when his Hockey contract expires.

$70 for a deck is a fair price.

I feel it’s actually missing the “techno” vibe that ao probably pushed into 917. Limosine seems pure hardcore.
Was thinking sine-wave was a reference for limosine and was gonna have some banging electronic tracks.
Glad they’re doing their thing though, sure the brand will grow.

Thats the thing I don’t get. This brand won’t last and doesn’t seem like it’s trying to. I’d rather see max and Cyrus go to brands that could produce that classic video part. Cyrus on something like Real would bring some spark back to the brand. Instead there’s this.
Lol. Come on. So instead of doing something with his friends that people will be into, he should go to Real to try and spark the brand....because...?
The brand literally just launched, with a full length, and people have already written it's death notice.
I would say based on what new brands have succeeded and failed over the past decade the common denominator is you either have to knock it out the park with the brand identity, or be Paul Rodriguez.
Exactly, even if they were not satisfied with 917, that was a very strong concept.
This video, along with the very untied graphics and image, made me feel that they were more like a homies production with a bunch of gear than an actual brand.
I hope that they make some adjustments in the near future because the team is sick, filming is great but get someone who can do branding.

Fashion, techno, appropriation of gay culture and random small businesses images, a weird number related to a answer machine.
917 can stand on its own as a brand with image and could have done it without riders, probably without the same impact, it’s just a matter of presentation.
I cannot funnel all this in a single word but it made sense for what it is, or at least more than Limosine does right now.
I’m sure that the boys are not going to stop and will probably get there as the launch is surely an overwhelming task, but I cannot unsee 3D, Numbers etc all over for now.
Think that John’s vid was a lot better and it was just promoting them as riders, this video didn’t communicate much.
-
I swear theres an AO interview where he talks about the ideas/graphics riders on 917 were submitting to him and he's like "No, not ever" I kinda feel for him seeing these decks, he was right.
But having Max Palmer and Cyrus kinda makes up for a lot.
-
I feel sorry for Alex in general. he doesn't seem to have been a good boss but he still gave them the platform and posse feeling they are now transporting onto limosine. all he gets is some ungrateful shit comments. people will say you dont earn to well as a professional skateboarder so making a company by yourself is a huge risk. Alex didn't have a Jamie Thomas or Reynolds career beforehand. he was still relatively young for somebody trying to do something like that. they should be nothing but thankful for that.
917 still does product and i will still support

Agree with the too part but Thomas and Reynolds were only about 22 when they started zero and Baker. Alex may have actually had a more substantial career before starting his company than them.

I feel like they chose the name limousine with the intention that people would start calling it Limo for short and that would turn into the de facto brand name.

If you didn't like how your boss was treating you when you're 'working' then you'd probably quit right?
You can still be grateful for the opportunity and like them as a person.
That being said, I could see 917 rebuilding on some Strobeck young skater recruiting type shit.

Well technically 917 is just a rebrand of Bianca Chandon, which had a much more interesting first run than this shit.
Grace Jones deck that’s also a Jason Lee reference?

The lazy logo shit was years later when his team kept rejecting his ideas. Aiden left because he didn’t know his first board was a Don Barley reference.

Yeah, agree for sure, Bianca Chandon started strong and the 917 split from that (I have that hat). I don’t see 917 as just a rebrand of Bianca Chandon, because BC is still going. I’ve bought 917 decks and some cool stuff, but it seems to go with AO mood/motivation or maybe it was clashing with riders idk. Sometimes stuff is interesting and sometimes just phone number boring. 917 seems to have more in common (brand wise) with Sci-fi Fantasy than Limosine anyway.

you got this backwards. the max/cyrus crew already had a platform thanks to all of john wilson's vids, alex just co-opted that popularity by putting all those dudes on at once. he needed them more than they needed him. any success 917 saw was a fluke and with the benefit of hindsight, it's pretty clear AO never had what it takes to run a successful brand. how many years has it been since everyone quit and what has he done in the meantime? a couple of forgettable graphics and a radio party?

I saw those John Wilson videos but I still thought the crew was starting to take things seriously as a group as soon as somebody gave them boards. it seems like if it wasn't for 917 they'd all be on different companies without the insight into how to run or not to run a company. they should thank him for that. that guy taught them a lot whether they like him or not.

Agree with the too part but Thomas and Reynolds were only about 22 when they started zero and Baker. Alex may have actually had a more substantial career before starting his company than them.
He might have been around for longer but Reynolds has already won SOTY and there is no AO part that comes close to Thomas in Welcome to Hell

also different times I guess. no internet. no need of being huge from the start because of instagram. less excpactations. no need of being frequently posting stuff. far less board graphics have already been made and are played out.
Alex loves culture and design by heart but is also a stubborn hater. its not easy to make something simple yet recognizable.
he could have done some of those whack board graphics and would it have changed anything about the company? I doubt it

What was the concept exept having max, cyrus and nik on the team ?
I see what you mean. And yes John's video was on the best video of the last few years, way better than Limo.
-
anyone plugged in to the northeast visual arts scene rn knows that these dudes are on the wave. i think people from other parts of the country might just think it’s wack cause they aren’t exposed to that stuff. sorry if i sound like an elitist dick i’m not trying to be, i’m just saying they’re a product of their environment in a regional way u don’t see anymore.
There have been plenty of wack waves. Following trends and waves is fucking wack, and using that as an excuse/explanation is fucking wack. Good for these guys if they are really representing some local "wave", do your thing. But that doesn't mean it holds any weight outside of that local area.
-
This will be my most watched video of this year for sure. Always been a huge fan of these dudes and although I'm not a huge hardcore fan I found the music fit the skating very well and made the video exciting start to finish. Watched it 3 times already.
I don't understand why the brand is getting so much criticism here. They dropped their new brand with a dope full-length video and original designs, why make it more complicated than that?
I'm no economic genius but I assume they don't have the same budget for all the extra bs that some more established brands can do. Plus they are pro skaters, not artists, I can't imagine they have the time or resources to come out with the perfect graphics quite yet. I think they are creative and have a solid vision and will do some really cool stuff.
-
crazy to me that boom bap was old school within 10 years and trap music still is praised as being futuristic after 10 plus years of the same rattling hi hats and 808 bass
man this shit bugs me reading any review of anything vaguely boom bap sounding, it's always called "old school" "golden age" or "90's", but that style of music never stopped being made and is still being made in abundance

I like Cyrus but I feel he’s a budget Hjalte in that he has the same massive power but doesn’t diversify. I’ll still watch him do the same 5 things just like I watched so many other pros do throughout their careers, but let’s not act like he saved 917 in any way. Outside of Slap I don’t think these riders are as popular as people think. Maybe Nik or Max, but that could be a stretch.
There’s a lot of way shittier local brands that survive in pockets all over the country. They don’t need a huge contingent of customers to stay afloat and if they’re going BBS and less boxy shapes they will become an alt FA/Hockey for people that don’t like those shapes but like the image somewhat.
-
Who stole more skaters from 917? FA/Hockey or Limosine?
-
Who stole more skaters from 917? FA/Hockey or Limosine?
917 to FA/Hockey
- Aidan Mackey (FA)
- Vincent Touzery (FA)
- Nik Stain (Hockey)
917 to Limosine
- Cyrus Bennet
- Max Palmer
- Hugo Boserup
- Aaron Loreth (Am)
- Genesis Evans (Am)
- Karim Callender (Am)
- Santino Gagliarducci (Am)
It looks like there were a few people in 917 2 that were not in this video.
-
This may have already been mentioned somewhere else in the thread, but I can see exactly why AO did not want to let the team do their own graphics.
definitely. these graphics are basically the same, but crappier. color schemes and proportions are just a little bit off. here's hoping they hire a design consultant or something to tune things up on their next drop. just a little improvement would go a long way, imo. i want this to succeed.
-
I really enjoyed the video. The team is stacked, everyone has a distinct style and it's clear they're all just homies trying to make something together; which I really respect. As far as the graphics and imagery, I've said this before but I think the brand's unique and just needs some time to grow into itself. It's clear they have a vision and I think the video outlined that well. I agree they should find room for Stu Kirst and Andrew Wilson. Stu can contribute some great art for graphics and new Andrew footy is always a treat.
If they had the "Nice to meet you, I'm an artist" guy do some art for guest boards I'd buy them all.
-
Who stole more skaters from 917? FA/Hockey or Limosine?
Nobody stole anyone lol. They all quit because Alex Olson sucked to ride for. I don't get why anyone would feel sorry for Alex when he admitted he was completely absent from the actual skateboarding side of it for the last few years. He couldn't even turn up to his own companies video premiere despite living on the same street as where the premiere was being held. Also the whole graphics thing just seems like one big joke when Alex himself said on his Nine Club he literally does not care and will just send clip art through to get printed on boards.
-
Not trying to peel anyone’s wig too far back here but y’all realize that both companies can suck in equal but different ways, right?
-
maybe i’ve got no taste, but i think the cyrus board is cool, and the team one is nice. the artwork for the max board is nice as well, but it doesn’t look great on the board with the brick. still gonna cop a max board tho

Cyrus & Max Palmer were skating together for a long time before Alex started 917. they were always on Quartersnacks and in low key indie edits. They also haven't really bad mouthed him - just said they were over the company and he was pretty lack lustre in his attitude to running it - which he himself confirmed.
-
I have no problem with these graphics. But I think I'm at the point where as long as they aren't embarrassing or awkward, then we good. This first run of graphics is nothing to scoff at, really, and it seems like an image is being established in its early stages.
-
917 dot 2.0 the graphics are so random and cheap, maybe made by the team for save money. If they hire an art director would be a bitdifferent from the cheap artworks of 917's style.

I really like the "blank" board, I've honestly hoped that more board brands would do heavily minimal graphics like this more often. Also the Glam board isn't really too bad either, it would be funny/entertaining to see some machismo/hesh dude skating one of those, and you're gonna boardslide the graphic off anyways so why even choose to ride a board with a graphic you really like? Whenever I did that it made me avoid boardslides so I can look at it longer, which is lame. Skateboards are meant to be destroyed so buy something that skates well and you don't mind destroying. If you like the graphic hang it on your wall.
-
i just want to stress that cyrus, max, genny, logan and the rest of these guys n gals could start a company called "fart" where the boards are just the word "fart" in times new roman on a flat color deck and this would still be a highly compelling brand for me. Nobody skates the city like cyrus or max. Not all of us need this to be some sort of new frontier in computer graphics to make us want to support the crew that gave us literally the best skate content of the last 5 years.
regardless, i like the design, especially the flyer for the video and cyrus' board.

I love Cyrus and Max enough that I might have bought the bullet if I were buying one from a shop for $60 plus grip, but for $70 with $15 shipping and another few bucks for grip? I just cannot justify that.
$70 for a deck is a fair price.
But it's not $70, it's $70 plus $15 shipping and grip. So it's a $90 deck, which is my point.
How much you reckon it costs them to ship a deck with tracking these days? It can't be less than $8-10 bucks

I only paid $10 shipping on a deck and dvd. Also the boards are screen printed, which $70 isn’t really all that steep for. And it comes with free grip. Plus if $10 shipping is still bad, orchard has $5 shipping to the lower 48 and free shipping to New England

Pink Glam board is sick. I skated it it's the Brophy 8.5 14.75 Girl shape but BBS. Tiny mellow tail. No one (not even AO) understood 917 as a weird shape company. Skating the 8.5 14.1 917 slick rn. Hard to find in other places. 917 and Limosine might just be rounded-kick FA shape companies

Same. I really like the whole minimal 917 art as well; it was a breath of fresh air compared to FA/Hockey. Nothing like skating boards that look surfy, shits fun. I kinda like Frog for the same reason even though their graphics suck, they have a chill vibe going on. The FA vibe sorta bums me out since they're so gloomy/edgy, I was a fan as a teen but I find skateboarding to be really fun and totally not depressing these days.
Those blanks shoulda been price points tho IMO. Maybe not tho, it might be like pennies in difference between having an actual graphic.

I kinda get what youre saying but cyrus can get more gnar, I think he should sprinkle some rail action like the absurd round one he did in there or other more gnarly stuff
never met anyone who has been skating longer than 3 years that did not like max or cyrus. for me it looks like within ~the scene~ both are well respected and hyped. max and nik prolly more though
-
The best graphic 917 ever put out was the triple baconator.
Can’t listen to this shit but all these guys rip. Why is Andrew Wilson not on and pro tho what am I missing here. Saw all the boards at the shop the other day, they look good. Not silly rectangles like FA. Nothing bigger than 8.5 tho so I had to keep it moving. If they make a big board I will buy it.

Unpopular opinion time!
I think at least on SLAP this brand was hyped up so much leading up to the release of the video that it created expectations that were gonna be impossible to fulfill no matter what you do, but I wasn't a fan.
The music wasn't good. And I say this as someone who has a pretty open mind for music in skate videos. The songs by and large are hard to listen to, and full parts from Cyrus, Hugo, and Max Palmer are weighed down by the heelflip jean shorts dude and Aidan Mackey's sister.
I thought that Karim guy was cool. Loved Aaron Loreth's section. Genesis Evans footage was chill, but good lord the song was rough.
For being a little over 20 minutes the video feels super long.
Definitely a step down from the 917 videos, but hopefully the next video offering will have a better soundtrack at least.
Not that it's a comparison, but I liked "Hit Video" way more and it has a lot of the same skaters.
I will still buy several boards from them most likely lmao. Cyrus and Max Palmer pro models = take my money.

Polar has made a lot of awkward, embarrassing graphics. So far, Limosine has not. Andrew Wilson still absent from the video, though.
Eh, I dunno. For reference the link below is either Polar’s first or second season from back in 2012. It was much better imo, but I’m beating a dead horse.

With all this talk of 90s dvds, I just want to see the iconic Wild Things pool cover, just subbing in Max and Cyrus for Neve Campbell and Denise Richards
-
Yo that fucking sucked.
I really liked Logan Lara's last videos but this is just abrasive and shit. Like having some cool guy staring you down in a NY loft style apartment playing his "people probably won't get this" Spotify playlist and sneering at you like he's better than you because his parents paid 46k per year to Pratt Institue so he could snort ketamine with the art bros.
Sounds like a great time tbh

The Polar hanging roller skater/longboard graphic and the dude with the scooter through their chest is still pretty corny imo. I'm not a huge fan of the font on the snake pit and cyrus board but other than that I think the Limosine graphics are fine so far.

Overrated on slap and underrated everywhere is least enviable position. There can be no winning

you really think its wild to not like a ride on 5-0 shov on a fucking curb in full slow motion with blood on his pants.
might be a little exaggerating to say I hate it but its just not up to bar to some other things he has done.
well actually his skating is driving me nuts how his back toes always hang over his tail and are about to toe drag on anything and his stupid trucks shaking around. his ability to grind for 1 second and the editor putting It in slow mo so it looks like a decent grind.
he also makes some insane shit grinding on walls and stuff but most of the time it pisses me of that everything gets hated on except this core New York hipster crew. its not fashion lifestyle hipster its just pure skateboarding hipster. people that like him will hate on anything so I won't shy away from criticizing it the same way as others.

wow, you must be fun at parties!
I think you dont get what Max is giving "us" (= people that love his skating) by skating the way he does? It is about flow, creativity and fun (at least for me) like he doesn't plan most of his tricks. On top of that, he comes off as such a mellow, down-to-earth character and seems like a skate rat (e.g., building DIY spots).
I bet you're one of the dudes that sees skateboarding as a meritocracy (which it is obviously not)?
-
Looks like they got copyright issue with that Primal Fear track on the last part - thats a real shame as it went really
well with the skating and im sure would have helped introduce that Leandoer guy to a load of fresh ears.

no not really but I never got sponsored and thats why im bitter because Ive always had lots of fun skating and nobody gave me money for it.
if one of my friends skated like this I wouldn't judge him like that. but if you are getting payed for it and skate hipster scene is freaking out about it than let mir spinkle some hateful salt over it if they have double standards like that. bet Andy Anderson has lots of fun skating too and nobody stops to judge him (I enjoy max skating more just saying)
im an asshole. hes having fun. no Red Bull logos. whatever. give him all your money. damn I wish I would've a sponsor.

like what about that time somebody called ronson Lambert a fucked up pill head and not a single soul was like hey he lost his mother relax. only cause his skating is not 2021 stylish you can make fun of it even when mental illness is involved or a stroke of fate happens.
rethink your values if you dont think I can say I didnt like the video
that just proves my point that most skaters never lost their inner buzz from home alone

It’s 2021, lets stop using the word hipster

To settle the debate, Max Palmer's specialty is doing tricks that blur the lines between tricks. Like, "did he mean to wallride into that? Was that a nollie tailslide or a nollie 180 switch crook and does it matter? Did he just noseblunt a rock? Willie grind to back smith the other side of a ledge? Angle iron on a bank is a spot? How does he ollie hippie jump things with such ease?"
Some of what he does is only possible with his super squirrelly trucks. Sometimes, he just looks out for squirrels. Sometimes subtle, but definitely an artist.

isle wouldn't be in that category though. some of blueprint's 'big' names went off to do palace instead (danny and chewy).

Yeah, true (that’s why I said in a way). I was also thinking H-Street mass exodus to World/Plan B.
But def Sour.
It can’t be that surprising to Alex that everyone bounced when he seemed completely off on a different trip to the team. Guess that’s why skaters kept leaving, then everyone just had enough and just cut him out. Everyone’s probably happier. Wonder if 917 will rebuild or just bumble along as another AO sideproject?

Because it was too wordy so I just changed it to drop hammers out of laziness.

He Blew It At Some Point.
(He left Polar when Pontus had a graphic ready for his board, other teams for other arbitrary reasons.)

Dude said one of the reasons he quit was because of those big boy jeans…. LMAO. Hard agree, that is an instance of a skater taking the skater bullshit to the extreme of "I'm not really vibing with having the best sponsors." Who would want that guy after that? He's a great skater and fun to watch, but he muffed it pretty good there.

he also said, he didnt like the graphics (especially of his potential pro board) and the direction of the company, it's been a little bit more elaborative than just disliking the pants. Moreover, you always have to keep in mind that pontus must be really hard to work with... but yeah, carreer-wise and financially that wasnt a smart move

You rode for them for a few years and even had a part in their last full length, “We Blew It At Some Point.” I personally really loved that video but I know you’ve mentioned in other interviews that you never liked the vibe of the edit. What in particular was it that made you not like your part in the video?
Well, the song in my part for sure, that song should not be in a skate video at all. I didn’t like the whole modern art vibe to it all, I didn’t like that Big Boy pants were a thing, and it almost all felt trendy in a way. Their graphics also felt kind of hit and miss, like I would like one graphic out of a whole season of boards. Towards the end Emile [Laurent], Paul [Grund], and Hjalte would do some of the graphics and those were cool, but everything else just wasn’t my vibe. Skating just means so much to me, and in doing so, it makes me overly critical in every aspect I choose to represent. If I’m not 100% stoked on what I’m riding for, then I’m just over it. Like I’m fully committed to my homies on the team, but I’m not fully committed to this company.
I know people have gone on record to say that Pontus Alv can be a bit intense to deal with. Did you guys have any disagreements or butt heads at all?
Yeah, nothing too crazy though. There would be disagreements from time to time on skate trips. Sometimes he would just put off a bad vibe and it would trip me out, but I’m also just a different person than he is. That’s my friend and I understand that at the end of the day you’re the boss, but it just never felt comfortable. I knew I wasn’t going to be there forever.
I heard rumors of there being a pro board already in the works, is that true?
Yeah, there was. I saw the graphic that was mocked up for my pro board and it would have been a graphic that, if that was my pro board, I would have cried - and not tears of joy. I mean shoutout to Pontus for the gesture in wanting to turn me pro but I wasn’t feeling the graphic.

Seems a bit silly. There's no company on the planet that nail every aspect of running a brand. Sometimes they have weak graphics, dodgy edits etc. As a whole Polar is God tier compared to 95% of the industry.
Also We Blew It At Some Point is a masterpiece. This dope is fried.

Reminds me of when Kyle Beachy wrote an in-depth, positive and pretty mundane review of 917's video that pissed Aidan and his friends off so bad they refuse to work with Jenkem at all

I've said this in other threads, but it's crazy someone can be so image conscious, and have so much footage in Janoski slip ons. On one hand I respect that if he's not completely 100% down, then he's not down, but you can't tell me if he was on Hockey and there was something he didn't like, he'd quit. I think there's probably a lot more to his relationship with Pontus too.

Not that it will ever happen but wouldn't it be great if, after all that, he ended up riding for like Flip or some shit like Darkstar. And was genuinely like "this...this is what I'm talking about" pointing at his basic pro model in a non-ironic/non-money chasing way. Would melt minds.

I ran across the Polar crew filming in in NYC several years back and I can confirm that Pontus was absolutely radiating bad vibes. Session did not seem fun at all. Im not hating, not everyone needs to be a jolly good time 24/7, but i can understand why someone might quit. Some of the graphics are kinda busted too. Funny tho bc Limo graphics are not much better… maybe even worse depending on your taste. I still skate a lot of polar decks tho, it doesn’t have to be that deep.
-
Never heard of them, but I just tried to watch their last video and couldn’t get past the first minute. The tricks were good but they just looked so uncomfortable on their boards I couldn’t take it. I’m sure it probably got better, but that was my experience anyway. Lots of really wavy arms and wacky inflatable man moments in that first minute lol

Was it by chance while filming for that clip where they had the shopping trolley with the sheet metal and pole etc? I can understand that being a stress fest for Pontus trying to make a specific type of video. Regular sesh tho fuk that.

I enjoy Jenkem on the whole, but basically any of their "analysis" is painful to read; Beachy especially, who I don't find to be a remotely compelling writer.
-
It's really hard to think seriously about skateboarding and write about it in a way that goes beyond the ordinary puff-piece type of skate media, so props to anyone who tries, even if they don't quite nail it all the time. That said, Beachy is like an underdeveloped creative writing professor character from a mediocre indie film about people who cheat on their partners and feel bad about it or something. He seems like the kind of person who would say "I am an author!" as a flex when he got all worked up.
-
Kyle Beachy is terrible. Also I think in general Jenkem has gotten that Johnny Wilson crew offside. The unpublished Caleb interview that was super awkward that resulted in Ian calling Caleb and making it even more awkward. Asking Diego Todd these weird questions about mastaurbating.

Pardon the expression, but Beachy is more or less the “tallest midget” in the field of skateboard writing. It’s usually so terrible that anyone with a BA can stand out. With that said, I haven’t read the book yet and it got pretty good reviews from a number of places, so maybe I’ll have to revise my opinion at some point.

I think you're essentially correct. I have read the book, and while it had some really good moments that I appreciated and even at times enjoyed reading, I came away from it thinking mainly "Man it must be really hard to write well about skateboarding," because there were times that it fell so completely flat. It seems to me that writing about skateboarding and writing about music should have a lot of similarities, but skateboarding has yet to produce someone like Griel Marcus, someone with considered opinions and the ability to express them concisely and with some erudition while remaining mostly free of writerly pretension.

Some of the graphics are kinda busted too.
But goddamn, the shapes sure aren't.
For real. I have skated some graphics that I found totally uncool just bc the shapes are so dope
And regarding Kyle Beachy… I’m glad he helped break open the genre of skate lit but I agree with everyone above. If you really want the full experience without reading anything you can listen to Vent City and notice how sort of like bitter and self-critical he is. Kyle if you’re reading this bro we love you and we want you to have more fun! Smooth that brain out a little bit, the Neanderthal idiocy is part of skateboarding.

Reckon the closest thing we've got is Carnie?

I just got the book this weekend but haven't started it yet.
Let’s be real tho, the best skate writer is pilot light.

Yeah, that's probably pretty close. Ted Barrow is Robert Christgau. Gifted Hater is that Needle Drop guy.

I get that entirely. I'm in the minority of liking longer boards, but being 6'1" with long ass legs and big feet, it just feels comfortable skating a longer board. Either way, I might just go for it and buy one.

Dude said one of the reasons he quit was because of those big boy jeans…. LMAO. I’m sorry man but those Polar checks must have been really nice after big boys and 93’s blew up… so to quit a company in the height of their financial boom (trendy pants or not) AND they’re about to give you a pro deck is some fried shit. In the words of the great Kenny Powers, you gotta play to get paid.

I mean shoutout to Pontus for the gesture in wanting to turn me pro but I wasn’t feeling the graphic.
https://heckride.com/f/andrew-wilson
Seems a bit silly. There's no company on the planet that nail every aspect of running a brand. Sometimes they have weak graphics, dodgy edits etc. As a whole Polar is God tier compared to 95% of the industry.
Also We Blew It At Some Point is a masterpiece. This dope is fried.
damn bro, you dont have to take his personal decisions so seriously. he wasn't feeling it, end of story. as long as he's not disappointed, we dont really have any reason to criticize him. i also really enjoyed we blew it at some point, but i definitely agree with him in that most of the polar graphics suck

deadass man, the only reason i continue to purchase is bc of BBS wood, i got used to the shape and i like having a lot of empty white on the board so that it's easy to see the wear on the board so you know how old the board is getting. just that 1/3 of the board with a shitty drawing or "modern art" really fuckin sucks
polars gonna fade into obscurity if they keep with this shit and don't release a new video. i hate big boys and their $40 shirts are too fucking expensive for no reason. also the non skaters starting to wear their clothes makes me hate them even more
im starting to not give a shit about dane brady & emile laurent anymore and that feels weird. i guess that's life, time to move on to backing a new company

Isn’t he the Euro-Jamie Thomas?
Nah, more like euro ed templeton.
He wouldn’t get mad at you for not skating gnarly enough or whatever. But maybe ask you if he can get your used socks after the session or something weird like this.

Unfortunately Jerome Campbell too. I think the story was they had to be let go so the next group (oski, Herrington, Brady) could go pro

polar has had some real clunker graphics recently. just low effort stuff.
No waaaaay. They have a few of my favorite graphics right now.

I don't know if I would get this next one specifically, but I think its visually striking if you're into this type of graphic:

As to their clothing stuff... I'm not sure why anyone would pay more than $50-60 for pants... but I'm not going to hold it against them for making bank off of rubes. Definitely won't be getting their clothing myself.
As for Limosine... yeah their decks are pretty terrible. I'm not sure why they haven't put the Paymasters DVD cover on a skateboard yet. That cover is a really cool piece of art.
Because people want to buy something that is really good quality and will last.
I like Polar but I wouldn't really say it's "good quality and will last", loads of their clothes have a bunch of issues like surf pants fading instantly and the buttons on the trou coming off, not a massive deal but I wouldn't say the quality is what justifies the price
yeah, they changed production sites and people say since then quality has been declining. a friend of mine tore two big boy pants in a row first try

yes, that's what I recall, too, but having injuries isnt something unusual and with a certain level of loyality between brand and skaters this wouldnt cause problems. For instance, I doubt pontus is going to kick off oski when he doesnt recover as quickly as expected... but I'll guess the answer is just those guys werent marketable enough compared with the next generation
he also split parts with Jan Kliewer and Tjark Thielker

Polar graphics are consistently good, frog is an acquired taste in my opinion. That Jalba graphic with the cat next to the tree was so sick though.
So far, I've not been blown away by Limo graphics but they're a far cry from bad.
-
Really diggin the mini board. Don’t know what my 6’1” size 11.5 shoe wearing slim thick ogre lookin ass would do with it. But. I’m still hyped on it.
Lmao slim thick! I know the struggle. Skinny fat looking ass dude.

Jan Kliewer and Tjark Thielker were part of the German Polar division. Kliewer is like 40+ and living a good life.
Haven't seen anything from Tjark Thielker in the last few years.
Michael Juras is still shredding and destroying spots in Poland. He is a beast.
Back to the topic,
Limosine is rad, Polar is rad, Frog is rad.
I don't care much about graphics from boards if the shapes and wood are nice.
I like Limosine's output so far.

thinking of buying one of their boards, anyone ride one yet? shape? thoughts on it? thanks

loved seeing kliewer skate in person. dude just has the sickest style. he even made skating the skatehalle looking real good and fun. once i kind of tried to trace after him just to understand how he'd hit this route. it wasn't like i tried to run a train with him, i had some distance, so if he'd bail, i could easily just go somewhere else. but the guy just never bailed anything. at some point i think he noticed i was following him and glanced back, smiled but shook his head. i was pretty ashamed lol. it was basically my way of showing my adoration for the dudes skating. i was just baffled how he approached the whole park because he took some wild transfers or swerves and such.

This feels like it was about to turn into a copypasta that takes a funny romantic turn. If I wasn't feeling so lazy right now I would write it myself haha.
Thanks for sharing. Ignore my imagination, no harm intended.

Any of them could get away with it, and no one would notice. Maybe polar, but if you fed it enough data in advance I'm sure it would be close.

been riding an 8.38 Cyrus model. Best thing since sliced seranos.

Which of limo, frog, polar or 917 will be first to crank the AI graphics?
none, because they all get too much enjoyment out of making their bad graphics. why outsource something you enjoy?
although on second thought i could see AO churning out a few AI graphics when he's too busy with his new hobbies making house records or surfboards or whatever
-
its gonna be the first polar/palace-esque brand that comes out of Japan. theyre gonna have their first pro be not a human, but a humanoid robot. the graphics will be AI generated. theyre gonna give Pat Duffy a guest board though which is pretty dope. yuto is gonna be pished

917's AI generated boards are all 6.75" wide with pointed noses and you have to set them up with rollerskate trucks. I saw Alex working on their next catalogue in a hair salon.

Love that these guys seem to be getting in the van a lot. Pacific Northwest the other month and now in the UK/Europe.
Checking in to see how 917 is looking, and man their Instagram looks like something you'd use to find at Urban Outfitters or Opening Ceremony 5 years ago - https://www.instagram.com/callme917

Yeah and they’re paying to sponsor a lot of posts/ads with no skate content in them. Wouldn’t be surprised if AO is totally checked out but needs to at least try and keep money coming in because he took out a big loan or something

917 is my favorite Baker Boys sub brand for the simple fact that the decks are always much cheaper than Baker decks, but it’s the same wood.

I mean one of the reasons those dudes left and started Limosine was because they wanted control of their graphics

Rewatched Paymaster/I just took a bite of dirt and got syked to go skate. Out of curiosity I went to Limo's website and it appears to be taken down/under construction. Anyone know if they're already in trouble or just reestablishing their website?

New drops typically cause them to take down the site while they upload new merchandise and drop a video.

I believe it’s just down til their next drop in like a month or so. Kinda weird to have your website down in between though

That's what I assumed. Maybe it's one less expense to have the website up and running after each drop has shipped. Otherwise they could've just used the Limo L logo and a "under construction" over a one color backdrop or something. Enjoying what Limosine has put out video wise so far. Glad to know its not going anywhere

The dimensions look kind of similar to Hockey/FA shape #2 as opposed to the generic BBS.
