Title: Joe Castrucci: WORSE Than Jamie
Post by: TROPICS on May 09, 2007, 08:38:05 PM
from the June 2007 Skateboard Mag Silas Baxter-Neil interview:

'Q: I heard Joe Castrucci used to send you outfits so you didn't dress like a person.

A: Joe would send me medium t-shirts instead of large t-shirts and he gave me a pair of his old pants on Christmas.  He and Brandon are both so fucking picky about that shit.  It's annoying, but they didn't do that Jamie Thomas shit where they pick out my bandanas and pants and band t-shirts and tell me I had to wear them.  Most of the shirts that Joe would send me ended up at Buffalo Exchange anyway.

Q: Did you used to wear big gear or something?

A: Not big gear, but I still wear large t-shirts.  I never really spent alot of money buying clothes or anything like that, so I just kind of got what I got in a box of clothing.  I wasn't that into fashion, I didn't really care that much.  I didn't put that much effort ito it.'

That's so fucking bad. As we know, Renaud was never down for the jazzbo-sophisticate vibe they tried to market him as, and Wenning left partially because he was disappointed in Habitat's deevolution from an archetypal unrefined, come-as-you-are East Coast company into some trite v-neck tee, cords, pivot-to-fakie bullshit.

Especially taking into consideration what Hill had to say in the AWS section of Cliver's 'Disposed' book about their purpose and goals as not only a company but as people, DNA has unmistakably lost alot of their credibility over the last few years, and not just because of arguably shitty team additions; the Workshop has gone from genuine, expressive ART with Memory Screen to 'artsy', the ultimate and most valid put-down in skateboarding. At least James could marginally rationalize his Chris Cole bullshit on here, being that for better or worse, Cole was receptive and seemingly by his own opinion sort of lost in life outside of skateboarding. So he currently looks like a buff 14-year-old who has 'rap sux' whiteout graffiti on his backpack and makes up fake metal bands, but at least he's 'found himself' and cutting loose, courtesy of I SUCK!

I mean, honestly, personally speaking, I'm not even really a fan of Silas' skating, which while 'very, very good', is for me the one legit connection to (the hackneyed modern) Habitat. That said, I'm a huge fucking fan of the fact that he seems to be a dude with a good head on his shoulders who's just going to do himself, regardless of marketability and personality flare. That's what truly matters, and that's some real pro shit. Yeah DNA, 'Kill Trend Continuum', totally.

I'd say sending shirts a size smaller than you normally wear and sending you the whole kit are two different things.  There is no way that Castrucci is worse than Jamie, even though I do agree what he's doing is weak.

how does sending silas a different size tee shirt turn  into a rant about how skateboarding is all about marketability?

Damn dawg!  I like how he doesn't give a fuck about being black balled or nothin'.  Personally, I really detest any riders that currently, or used to belong to the 'new Powell', but he's earned my respect.

I'm not buying the idea that there is a 'uniform' or something like that going on at Habitat. The team guys seem really close and a lot of teams aren't like that these days. It could just be an inside joke that's gone wrong. Either way I don't think sending a guy a smaller shirt instead of a larger one constitutes some grand marketing scheme. I personally like to see teams that have some connection between the guys. Would it be marketing if Habitat didn't put on a metal guy just because he wears tight pants? That's reaching. I think the team riders have to in some way reflect the company. Most of the Girl/Chocolate guys dress similarly and it makes them seem like a more cohesive team for some reason. If you had a team, you'd probably pick guys that reflect ideals of the company you're trying to do. No?

Dude, bro you totally got me all wrong.

You hate me, cool. But you can't rewrite the past and make it happen the way your preferred it to give you more of a reason to hate me. I never sent the dude outfits, kits or told him what to wear. One Ozzy Osbourne t-shirt, but I guess you only read, hear or believe what you want.

I don't know castrucci from adam, but everyone teases someone for something and that looks like what's going on in the interview, but we should get excited and read between the lines and if necessary add stuff between the lines...it's our right or better yet, our duty.

Well said, and its funny that people want to believe it's not about image because they like habitat. I like habitat as well but you cant ignore that the entire video everyone will be basically wearing the same gear. I remember SBN's shit from the Powell day's he wasn't wearing huge clothes or anything like that and its fucking hilarious that that Castrucci would think a large is too big

i think it's been obvious tht habitat is pretty serious about their 'image control', all the shots in regal road of them climbing trees and examining leaves and stuff, janoski's image has changed a lot since he got on too but dictating t-shirt size is pretty fucking gay, that's on some og powell shit.

i still think the most cynical and horrible marketing device in skating is crailtap.com

No Flip is way better.  It's not even close. Tom Penny, Geoff Rowley, Rune, Ali, Arto and Mark Appleyard are all fucking legends. Habitat has some great skaters but Janowski and Garcia are the only two on the same level as those guys. Rob Puhlowski or Ed Selego? No fucking way.  Not to mention Rodrigo Tex. and Bob now. I like both companies though but Habitat does have a somewhat manufactured image compared to flip's marketing off their rider's own style. But whatever its still Blitz distribution isn't it?

danny was gangster?

youre a total fucking idiot.
anyone who thinks along the same lines as this fool can also consider themselves part of this not-so-elite crew.
take dannys 411 part with james craig for instance. he had a shaved head, rode for city starts and wore a little baggier pants.
does this qualify him as, "gangster"?

hardly.

that part was probably filmed in the late 90s, which, at the time that exact style was quite popular among the so cal skateboarders. that would also make it...lets say, 6 to 8 years ago.
if you dress the same way you did 6 years ago, youre in a complete state of arrested development.
people change, styles evolve. i am certainly not wearing the same clothes i was when i was 15.
dannys evolution was hardly overnight, so i fail to see whatever point you thought you had.

This is actually my first post since they changed the forum over, but I just had to ask...

Hey Jamie, is your Abe Lincoln avatar supposed to be some kind of 'Honest Abe' subliminal (or otherwise) reference, or do you have a particular fondness for the state of Illinois?
[close]

Just down for Abe.

or perhaps he's really down for prime minister shinzo abe's harsh reforms on education and nationalism.

Well - this is pretty regular but everyone I know in the skateboard community has called me to check out this thread.  I don't ordinarilly get on here but whatever, its too late now.  It looks like 1500 people have been talking about this stupid topic so I'll clear it up.  The Habitat team are pretty much all friends - shit gets joked about for years in tour vans and people run out of questions in interviews.  I don't even remember where that shirt thing came from.  Maybe I sent Silas of packages of medium tee's cause he's not tall or maybe it was for a trip and I know he wouldn't be washing shirts.  Brennan and I are picky about skaters and footage, that is true.  Who knows.  It should be real obvious to everyone that there is no lame marketing involved with Habitat.  Shit, there is one dude that does all in-house creative shit - I wish I had time to work on marketing the team.  These guys all run whatever gear they want.  The only control Habitat has is picking skaters that fit the identity of the brand.  And don't forget Habitat is 7 years old, the look of the company will always be progressing.  Anyway, check out the field log to see how much marketing and planning went into everyones outfits - especially Freddy. - Joe

Leave Motorhead out of this. All they have ever done is make good rock and roll. And, I seriously doubt Lemmy has a marketing strategy besides Roweley hooking up that shoe. Just leave them alone...

See it's mentalities like this that are living in the stone ages. Every kid goes online to hear the new rumors or watch footage on youtube/google/fieldlogs whatever. As much as this place is full of "haters" it's also full of impressionable kids and industry head honcho's like jamie and joe. Not stopping by to share a different perspective only allows the supposedly unfounded rumors to grow. And besides i can honestly say that by Jamie coming here and sharing some experiences I've gained some insight and can appreciate where he came from and what he's accomplished even if i don't agree or support it. As much as some people downplay forums and there are alot of shitty ones that don;t matter, in the grand scheme of things slap gets checked more than any other and in the industry inner circle is considered where to go for the hot scoop or to leak some info.

Habitat does have a somewhat manufactured image compared to flip's marketing off their rider's own style.
Hate to further this whole pre-fab company rumor thread, but have you ever looked at Appleyard's skating before and after he got on flip? He went from a tech ledge skater to hammer dropper instantly. I don't know if I have seen Appleyard skate a ledge that wasn't down a set of stairs or something since he got on flip, and you know he does. Flip seems lame like that to me. Oh yeah, Arto too.

As for alien/ habitat? They seem like a breath of fresh air in skateboarding. They pick up some of the most creative and subtly talented skateboarders around, and seem to let them do their thing. I mean, I fucking hated Dill's shit in Mosaic, but atleast they let him act like an ass like that, and a lot of people really liked it. Alien has Josh Kalis, Grant Taylor, and Jason Dill all on one team, thats a lot of variety. Habitat is cool like that too.

Who blamed Alien for losing Pendleton? I love his shit, and it embodies the aesthetic I knew of Alien growing up, but how the fuck were they gonna compete with Element's payroll dept.?

So all of them hang out with Rowley and are just suddenly disgusted by the idea of a ledge line? I'm still skeptical. Flip only seems two have two types of skaters: rail riders and vert dogs.

Appleyard seems to just skate whatever's in front of him, most of his last ads have all been misc. tranny stuff. Good or bad, the people you hang out with influence you in some way. Hang out with rail dudes you're probably going to rails more often.

Pendleton was out of Alien before he went to Element. Element didn't hire him away from Alien.

One of the worst things they have done, in my opinion. their new graphics are ok/crap, but would have been much better if they incorporated Don's work with it.

only things i can like are the core shit right?

fuck off you follower.. flip is rad

Yeah I'm such a follower because I'm not down with lame contrived image driven companies who kick people off for almost no reason
flips team=rad
flip=sucks
theres a difference. nothing about the ads, graphics or image makes me even remotely care about them, obviously the team is the driving force. and french fred made sorry a masterpiece. don't mistake my opinion for bitterness, I'm just tired of iconic companies with no soul.
that and all the stories i've heard about jeremy fox make me not want to support them.

Oh man O man.....been a while since I've been on, but felt the need when it comes to this....
1. Tropics leave these boards immediately
2. Joe Castrucci has done more for skateboarding than most.
3. I personally know he shows all his riders the upmost respect, and takes care of them very well, as well as everyone else behind the scenes.
4. Tropics, eat a dick and burp yourself after you swallow.
5. Never post again.

really?
we need to attack people for having an opinion that may be plausible?
I remember the days of yore with alien workshop and that vibe has been gone for some time but it doesn't mean I can't stand the newer version.
There's nothing wrong with someone seeing an icon they once believed in ccrumbling and then voicing there thoughts on the subject.
And consistently Tropics manages to point out some interesting stuff.
Just because I don't agree with someone doesnt mean I need to ban them to exile.
Besides I thought the same thing when i read silas's interview, I'm glad Joe came by and cleared things up a little.

nobody really said anything bad about castrucci, just pointed out him trying to get silas to dress differently is exactly the same shit jamie thomas gets a hard time for.

Appleyard seems to just skate whatever's in front of him, most of his last ads have all been misc. tranny stuff. Good or bad, the people you hang out with influence you in some way. Hang out with rail dudes you're probably going to rails more often.
But I'm not saying he skates rails more often, I'm saying he has stopped skating ledges ENTIRELY. Look for it. Before Flip it was constant, since he was on flip he has NEVER skated basic ledges. Ever. No lines. No single tricks. I don't think he doesn't skate them at all, but for some reason, you never see any footage of it.

You can say he doesn't skate them often but to say you never see the footage is plainly untrue. Watch his part in Really Sorry; remember then line where he does two ledge tricks and then jumps the pole at the end? And remember the bs noseblunt with the tree in the background? Two examples of what you're referring to.

Isn't it weird that dudes who are obsessed with their own opinions and constantly post them for everyone in the world to read also are constantly amazed that anyone cares? It's weird to me that people feel their opinion is important enough to post but then think people are lame for caring about it. Pros, TMs, brand managers etc. are people too - and no matter what it sucks when people who talk shit on you. Especially when it's not true. No one wants a bad rap. In case you guys didn't notice - public opinion drives the skateboarding industry, and message boards are a pretty good barometer of where the customer base is at. Face it guys, you're not 12 year old brats from the midwest. You're shop owners, lifers, 20 something bitter east coast dudes(like me), with opinions on your passion. I guess I'm just trying to get at the fact that just because you've appointed yourselves doesn't mean that the jurys ruling doesn't matter, so choose your words carefully.

This isn't a place where I come to necessarily come so that the whole world can come and hear my opinion. Its a place where if I am bored, either at work (like I am right now) or whenever to just talk about skateboarding, which is something I love. It has nothing to do with being obsessed with my own opinion or standing on a soapbox or any of that shit. The ONLY reason people pay attention to this shit is because the industry owns the media in skateboarding. The result of that is that every video gets a good review, every pro skateboarder, every company, and every product that they make is put in a positive light. Transworld recently reviewed a $100 skate deck positively. Are you kidding me? Who the fuck is going to spend $100 on a fucking deck?! What the review should have said was something like this "Rodney Mullen is a genius, but he has trouble understanding the way people think. This is why he spent a lot of time designing an expensive board that anybody with a brain would never consider buying." But they didn't. Nobody does. The only mag that ever did that was big brother, and all the crybaby sponsors stopped advertising in it, and big brother went bust. Magazines don't have any balls anymore, and maybe if they did, then messageboards wouldn't be full of people who are annoyed with how much certain people (like a certain person who agreed with your post) get their asses kissed unnecessarily. People don't have to read this shit, and in the end, all a message board is is a slow paced conversation. Sometimes people argue, sometimes people agree, sometimes people joke around, and sometimes people eavesdrop. What people write on these boards are what they are thinking, and all those company guys whining about this shit should be thankful that atleast they can eavesdrop in this conversation.

This part of the conversation was good to eavesdrop upon.

Maybe you should reread what I wrote. Or maybe I'll just rephrase it. I'm not hating on message boards - I'm posting on one. It's good to have honest conversation. Maybe I think your industry perception is a little rash, I mean, we're talking about skate magazines not CNN here... I hope you're posting for a reason other than to battle the travesty of positively slanted product reviews. I guess you got a little offended when I said "obsessed." My bad, I'm just trying to say that people ARE reading, and it's lame that people are so eager to hate on people without giving them a chance, and then hate on them for standing up for themselves. The main difference between a conversation and a forum is that it's public and also anonymous. So you can call someone out publically, get the ball rolling and wind up with people saying some ridiculous shit that's totally out of line about someone. I was just putting it out there that Joe Castrucci is a real dude, not some comic book villain for people to hate on.

I'm just saying that people probably hate a little more on here because all skate media is just one giant skate industry circle jerk, people hear shit outside of the circle jerk that spreads around, and with nobody printing good and bad, there is no final word on the hating. And you know what? The hate extends far past messageboards on this one. A friend of mine who skates but despises message boards passionately read the interview listed above and came to the same conclusion that many above have come to about him doing a bit too much to control images. I would avoid personal attacks, but attacks on how somebody does business are perfectly within the realm of legitimacy. This place is just a conversation- but people listen in because there is shit people talk about on here that magazines don't have the balls to cover.

I thought you represented Brooklyn? I'm sure it can't be that hard to find a board in the size and shape of your preference. You can find just about anything in NYC. BTW, I'm stoked on our date. Should I go get a huge all-over print shirt, too? We could match!

I personally like Alien and Habitat, but all of the things you mentioned are usually why someone likes or dislikes a brand, so suggesting they don't matter seems unrealistic. No one wants to support something they think is wack when they have options.

i'm all for supporting companies and riders i down for but if their product sucks, i'm not going to buy it, sorry thats harsh but its the truth.  some people(mostly kids) will look past how shitty a product is and buy such and such pro model board because the dude rips, i'm not knocking that, i was a kid too.  but nowadays, i'm spending my hard earned money(not mommies) on my habit so i want to get the best product for my money.  yes 99.99% of the time i'd prefer to buy stuff from companies/riders i like but not at the cost of getting some subpar product in return....is that so wrong?

so you'd skate a Big and Rob board over a regular Zero or Mystery deck?

i'll skate any board given to me, you should see the piece i'm riding now.

but if i had to pay and choose, it'd be big and rob with a can of spraypaint.  it has to involve where my $$ goes to really matter.

AWS > zero/mystery

Word. But at least wholsale on them is cheaper than the other Chinese boards so the shops can make a little more. I know everyone here swings from the nuts of Girl but making Chinese boards and not passing the savings down to shops is shit. Shops don't make anything off hardgoods as it is so they have to stoop to shoes and clothes to keep their heads above water. That's why even your hardcore shops end up looking like Pac Sun or Zumies.

Let's clear something up here. When you say "myself and any respectable skateboarder I know will never ride any black box products" you're saying that because you don't like the graphics right? Because I know your crooked grinds or whatever on the local below knee high ledge aren't any more taxing than 360 flipping Wallenberg. While we're on the subject - if you're tougher on your boards than last years Skater Of The Year Chris Cole you should probably go on a diet - not dis one of the gnarliest board companies (if you like the style or not) in skateboarding. Wait a second, I'm pretty sure you just called out everyone on Zero and Fallen as unrespectable. Forget I dignified your comment with a response. Tight pants or not those dudes can skateboard - a lot better than you can - as a matter of fact better than you enough so you should just be quiet and keep your uneducated and unqualified opinions to yourself.

What's really worse? Darkstar taking it's graphics (who are done by Chet Thomas' brother) and chinese boards and hooking up some dudes that rip but are ignored by the cool-guy industry (Machnau); or AWS taking an MTV show and making it into a board? There's nothing wrong with either. AWS has Dyrdeks back - and let's face it, skaters are the cool kids now (for better or worse) and we've been depicted a lot worse than Rob and Big. Of course the salty dudes on this message board wouldn't buy a Rob and Big board, then again we're not really the MTV focus group are we? Good for Chet if he's making some cash and passing it on to skaters that might be board sponsorless otherwise - at least it's not World Industries.

alright, let's look at what I said, I really don't know one respectable skateboarder that would rep any black box products, I just don't roll with any 13-15 year olds pushing mongo with identity crisis'...sorry dude, it's just not my style, and that just happens to be the primary consumers of blackbox products in my area.

as for the riders on the blackbox companies, they all fucking rip and are on some gnarly rail and stairs shit, cool, yet again, not my steez.  mystery is the best shit you guys got going because you have real skaters on there not trying to portray an image (jamie and you're advertising dept take care of that one real well with the black and white, real mysterious.) but for the majority they just seem like your average skaters that are just out there trying to do their thing.

the zero squad has talent, Chris Cole is one of my favorite skateboarders, I remember skating love with him back in 99 when he was still on world, and just being blown away by the skill he had, along with his 411 wheels of fortune part he put out where he skated to common, and just being psyched on that era of skating in general because no one was trying to portray an image, Zero still consisted of some of the gnarliest dudes out there and everyone couldn't wait for another Zero video to drop because everyone wanted to see how gnarly skating can get taken.

Long gone is 1999.
Chris Cole is still one of the gnarliest skaters out there and you grabbing him was one of the best moves you've ever made (ALONG WITH JOHN RATTRAY), but I have a sneaky suspicion if he had stayed on enjoi, he would not be dressing as gnarly (primarily black, tight jeans, flair, excessive gear) as he does.  Zero has an image to maintain and I guess he's just doing his job.  It just sucks that wearing certain clothes to attain to an image is attached so closely with skateboarding now.

Also, the only kid i've ever heard give James Brockman's skating respect was this kid I knew who started skating Junior year of high school, pushed mongo, strictly smoked cigarettes, and was naturally a waste of life, great kid, just an absolute mess of a person, one of the more accident prone people ive ever met, the only videos he'd been exposed to were Baker2g and Osiris Subject to Change and after viewing these he started dressing in black tight jeans and white emerica t-shirts growing out a beard and his hair long, anywho, he is the only person in the 21st century i've heard give anyone give james brockman's skating some ups.  I haven't seen him since high school but last I heard he had stopped skating.

Anyone who know's whats up with skating (in my experience) is more likely to lean towards any Deluxe deck, Blueprint, Traffic, Clichè, Habitat/AWS, or even a Girl deck despite the china wood. they want to support something worthy, whether it to be the skater or the company, and in a lot of people's eyes the majority of the companies distributed by Black Box aren't those companies.

In a side note I want to give a big ups for Black Box employing formers pro's like Drake Jones, Alphonso Rawls, Mike Sinclair, Brian Howard, etc.  that's pretty sick.

so you should just be quiet and keep your uneducated and unqualified opinions to yourself.

and I am more educated and qualified than you know, bud.

You know that not only do those guy sget the boards for free, but they also get  paid for riding them? On top of that, I was at the Wallenberg contest and I seem to recall Skater Of The Year Chris Cole snapping the tail right off his Zero board. Maybe he needs a diet! Not Lindsey Robertson though. Introducing the indestructable board! You can weigh 200 pounds, jump down Wallenberg, land on the tail, and it won't break. Wait - nope, that doesn't exist. They're made out of wood bro. It seemed to hold up ok when he landed on the bolts right? My point exactly - these dudes are way harder on their boards than you could ever be - and they choose what they ride. You don't think Chris Cole could ride for anyone else? A lot of companies special make boards for riders because they don't like the boards their sponsor makes. Chris Cole rides Zero boards because he wants to - not because he has to.

Bam got his start off as a skater - his entourage didn't. Remember the board with Bam's dad on it? How is that different from Rob? Rob still skates all the time and is involved with industry stuff, not just autograph signings. He did enter Tampa this year. Truth is every episode of Rob & Big I've seen has had some legit skating in it. Ever been out skating and had someone tell  you to "do jackass." At least Rob & Big aren't single handedly repsonsible for making us look like kooks.

no pro gets anything for "free".  people keeping saying "free shit" but they forget the part where being a pro is a job and that they have to bleed for that shit.  nothings free, all that shit costs something, whether it be money or effort, in no way is it free.

pretty much.
we as skateboarders are lumped together for whatever reason and we're judged by the masses as a whole.  when Bam does something stupid on TV or whatever, in a way it reflects on all of us as far as the general public is concerned.  i don't know why the general public has to group us together?, but skateboarding is the only sport(lack of a better word)where this happens.
if you see baseball player doing some regular shit, people don't say all baseball players are stupid, but they do if you're a skateboarder.  dudes like Bam and other skaters who have some influence on popculture have been giving us a bad rap for a long time now.  hopefully they'll realize this at some point but i doubt it.  all them $$$ would make me blind too i guess.  :-\

You missed my point.  My point is that just because a person who skates hard rides a certain brand of board, doesn't necessarily mean that the board is strong. Those guys get as many boards as they need to get the job done, and while technically not free, they are pretty much unlimited as long as the guy is using them and skating for said company. A team's riders don't say shit about how legit the wood or the company is.  Of course Chris Cole could ride for another team. But who you ride for depends on who is offering, how much money is involved, and from the way they portray you. Though, to Jamie's credit, he wasn't nearly as big of a name when he had just gotten off of almost.

I do think it says something. I can't imagine a company not listening to imput ofrom its riders. Why would Jamie Thomas want to ride shit boards? I can only assume he's not some evil genius laughing at the cash he's making by intentionally selling sub-par boards. I'm 100% certain Zero can have their boards made wherever they want. Having to set up new boards all the time is annoying. I haven't ridden a Zero board since they were made at Watson, but your argument just doesn't make sense. The bottom line is you're not down for the image and you're just overstating an assumption that Black Box is making horrible boards with absolutely nothing to back it up.

The rob & big show themed boards are pretty fucking lame, and I can't think of any marketing scam that this is much worse than this. Can anybody think of anything specifically worse? Bam is lame, but he did actually start making his fame as a skateboarder. Not "Big" or "Meaty."  As much as I'd like to hold Alien at a level higher than this trash, I can't.

[close]
Do you really think that because a team of rippers skates for zero that it says ANYTHING about the boards?
[close]

ACtually, I don't give a shit about black box one way or another. You really buy into a lot of shit. You doubt that a company would go for the bottom line? You think shit like how well a board holds up matters compared to the size of the paycheck that a pro gets for it? You are just to bright eyed to talk to.

Dear Little Girls Arguing Above this Post,

I rode for that company Bulletproof once, I think. Actually, they had some "sales reps" come to the park, and take photos of people riding their boards. Well, they took photos, but no photos of us actually on their boards. Since their decks were black, they just adjusted the photo contrast so it looked like I was on their "SUPER CARBON FIBRE BOARD".

Their pedophile photos of us were all over their website, and also labelled us the "team". We never actually got a board. We did take one and beat the shit out of it later. It eventually broke, but sort of smashed into pieces like glass does.

Needless to say, I can confirm that The Most Indestructable Board never supported its team. The company of The Most Indestructable Board never took input from its riders (because they didn't know who we were), and their money earned went straight to skate park photographer pedophiles at the park. The Most Indestructable Board is actually STILL in business.

Therefore, I strongly advise into buying the shittiest quality decks on the wall.

Love,

BB

Tight pants or not those dudes can skateboard - a lot better than you can - as a matter of fact better than you enough so you should just be quiet and keep your uneducated and unqualified opinions to yourself.

agreed.

Kittens and rainbows don't keep the lights on.

When I first moved to Dayton a few years back I was driving up 75 and I saw that huge Castrucci dealership and was like "woah, I wonder if that's the Workshop guy?"

This thread reminded me of that.

I'm rambling. sorry.

Having ridden Black Box boards, I can say they are not the best. Felt kinda soggy after a few days of steady riding. But they aren't the worst by any means. A lot of people like "broken in" boards and that's what BB decks feel like, broken in. I ride Tum Yeto boards because I worked for them long enough to earn the right to call up their TM and ask for a couple boards and wheels to keep me skating. I think the hate of Castrucci and Jamie has exceeded it's validity. How long do you beat a dead horse until it's still a dead horse?

I've been riding my local shop boards for the past few years, but before that it was Workshop. Great wood, great shapes.

I bought a shirt, it said 'XL' on the tag, but it was a little tight

Smartest post in this thread... And anyone who's loyal to a particular distro knows skunky batches are a fact of life. Blackbox wood not the best, far from the worst. And their business practices are on par or better than 90% of the industry. People just bust their balls 'cause they don't like the image.

But back to the subject of this thread; should industry heads influence the style choices of their riders? I mentioned it in another thread but would the Plan B heads be douche bags for trying to talk Sheckler out of that back tatoo?

I never said anything like that. In fact, if you hadn't quoted me I wouldn't know what you were talking about. Again, I DON'T CARE EITHER WAY ABOUT BLACKBOX. I don't love or hate them. If somebody was willing to sell me blackbox shit as cheaply as I get deluxe shit, I'd probably get it. I also never said a board can either sell or be good. I never said shit about quality. I just said it is absurd to think that who rides for a company is ANY reflection on its quality, and your argument from the start was "HOw can they be bad if they have a good team?"

Yes I do. I've never ridden for or heard of a company that wanted to make shit boards so they could make more money - cost is probably the reason Black Box stuff is made in Mexico. Cheaper labor but close enough to keep an eye on quality and not have to ship over the ocean twice (making for dried out brittle boards).
You're right though - you can't assume either way. I just feel like you're assuming it's bad when the dudes who ride them make it seem otherwise - you're saying it could still be shit - and it could. The assumption doesn't sit right with me... sounded like more ungrounded hate. Remember this conversation started because of someone making a comment about "no self respecting skater" and a gun, I was just saying that dude had no idea what he was talking about by assuming that the boards were shit without ever riding one and you took up his defense.

blackbox isn't the only one with unsavory business practices, all of the other companies out there are following suit, yet they're the only ones getting shitted on for it.  why are the the rest of the companies doing the same thing excluded from the ridicule?

This brings up a good point--there is a spectrum of quality vs. profit and I think Blackbox falls somewhere in the middle, maybe a little right of center. Whereas American pressed decks would fall to the left of center. People who hate blackbox try to make quality/profit black and white like the two can't exist together. Jaimie has to balance quality and profit--I'm sure he doesn't want to sell a Dwindle-like product but does have a lot of paychecks to write.

Come on dude, what's your point? Take a deep breath before you post. This isn't a question, and the answer's no. Of course not. I'm not swinging from Jaimies nuts but he's earned the money he pays his riders and rightfully earned his legend status in blood sweat and tears. So what are you saying, he doesn't deserve a solid team and that he's somehow cheated in the skate industry. Stupid.

But you're questions about fair pay for Mexican laborers is good. I've mentioned it before and it never got addressed. Globalization's OK in my book if fair trade is employed. If Jaimie took that shit seriously I might even buy his product. And of course spraypaint over the gothy graphics.

Opperational costs:

Yeah, they get benefits and solid pay. The thing they appreciate most is that they have steady work, that's hard to find in Mexico.
The cost of living is lower in Mexico therefore the rent and labor rate is lower.

I can say for anyone that having benefits is worth most if not all jobs. I can understand freelancers that are fine with the money, but the assurance is always good. You really never know what'll happen.

Benefits are a start but "solid pay" doesn't tell me anything. I'm sure the landscaper who picks up migrants on the corner every morning thinks $6.00 an hour's solid pay. Is it a living wage? There's ways to figure that out and as a business ower it's your duty to do so if you care about social justice. Products can be certified as "fair trade" and I'm sure with a little research you could figure that out.

"Steady Work" sounds good but desparate people take shitty steady work because they're desparate. I'm sure prostitution's a steady gig.

How about that Theotis? "Do you think you'd have a good team if they had to work for free and you had no skate cred?" Real thought provoking...

ummmm, mexico is not the USA, therefore fair wages and all that other stuff mentioned means nothing, thats stuff is strictly for TAX PAYING AMERICANS ONLY.  i'm all for keeping things fair(within the 50 states) but mexicans residents(that means people living in mexico, not mexicans living LEGALLY here in the states) aren't supporting the US in anyway whatsoever, so they deserve absolutely nothing.
fuck that shit!  if you want to live like americans, if you want what americans got, learn the language and file for citizenship like my forefathers and their forefathers before them.

and before anyone goes apeshit on me, i'd like to add i have nothing against mexican people, i actually have the utmost respect for them.

I don't know much about any business practices, but how you treatin' them workers down in Mexico? They get any benefits? fair pay? What makes it cheaper to make boards in Mexico?
[close]

Yeah, they get benefits and solid pay. The thing they appreciate most is that they have steady work, that's hard to find in Mexico.
The cost of living is lower in Mexico therefore the rent and labor rate is lower.

Other companies make their boards in mexico for the same reasons.

It's pretty clear that the US is moving toward a service economy and can't compete on any level in terms of manufacture. Skateboards have been slow to move overseas because the wood is tempermental and the product wasn't produced in quantities high enough to warrant it until recently. The US has one of the highest standards of living and as long as the market demands $30 boards and US workers demand $30 an hour companies will move their wood overseas. Where it gets tricky is that the woodshops that supplied US board companies so long are still around - and they've lowered their minimums to accomodate shop boards and stay in business. Keep in mind that there's a fair amount of employees working in Southern California woodshops whose citezenship is questionable. It's not like buying American boards necessarily puts cash in skaters pockets and Mexico seems to be a good alternative to China - who everyone seems to think makes shit boards.

" I'm talking about the team here. Do you think you would have the same team if you didn't have as much money in the project and a legend such as yourself wasn't backing it?"

Ok, if you want me to explain why all I could see is you swinging from Jamie's fucking nuts I can explain it point by point.
FIRST, you come flying in to Jamie's defense. He could have defended himself, if he needed me to. Funny thing is, I wasn't insulting him one bit. But you start defending his honor as if it needed defending, and jump in on a conversation that you obviously have not read back on.

SECOND, you responded without even knowing what you were responding to. Your questions such as "whats your point" and "what are you saying," as well as your take on what I was saying show just how uninvolved in the conversation you were. Yet, because Jamie Thomas is involved you feel the need to put in your two cents, and from what I can see, all you care about is that people don't make Jamie feel bad. The person who I WAS addressing was rasing the point that zero's team riders ride for zero because the boards are strong. I said it was rediculous, and raised the point that Jamie Thomas is a legend in the skateboard community, and also has a fat wallet, and those two reasons are why the team is who they are. The reason I phrased it as a question was because it was a hypothetical, with an obvious answer, which illustrated my point.

So yeah, all I could see was you trying to kiss Jamie's ass without bringing up anything relevant, and in fact, having no idea what you were responding to.

Oh Theo... Read this again:

Benefits are a start but "solid pay" doesn't tell me anything. I'm sure the landscaper who picks up migrants on the corner every morning thinks $6.00 an hour's solid pay. Is it a living wage? There's ways to figure that out and as a business ower it's your duty to do so if you care about social justice. Products can be certified as "fair trade" and I'm sure with a little research you could figure that out.

"Steady Work" sounds good but desparate people take shitty steady work because they're desparate. I'm sure prostitution's a steady gig.
_______________________________________________________________________________

Yeah, I'm defending his honor... And who's not reading up on this post? And maybe I misread or misconstrued your post but I thought you basically asked Jaimie, "would you have such a solid team if you didn't pay your riders and you weren't a legend?" What's the relevance there? Anyone? You were illustrating the point that it takes money and cred to establish a good team? Whoa... Earth shattering. But it's not all money and cred, those dudes skate for who they do 'cause they fit the gnar hesh image. Except for the Scottsman. I still can't figure that one out. Maybe that one is just money and cred.

I hope this is a joke... You think only "tax paying americans" support our lifestyles? We buy all the shit we do because it's affordable, because it's made by people desparate enough to take shit for pay. Non taxpaying non Americans support our lifestyle more than the legal residents. Most of our tax money goes to the military and "defending" our border, which at this point in history does shit for our "lifestyle." It's all economics... All of it. And if we paid people a living wage in places like Mexico we'd see a huge decrease in people being pushed and pulled illegally across the border. It's a little more complex than that but look at places like the EU. Those contries are the size of US states and you don't see the imigration problem we do here. Because the EU invests in the infastructure of poorer EU countries (like Slovakia and Poland) so they don't just become a source of cheap labor.

Do you really think the US is better off treating the rest of the world like shit or turning a blind eye?

thats not at all what i'm saying.  i'm saying "fair wages and benefits" is an american concept for americans, founded by americans.  therefore this should not include anyone whos not american.  the term "living wage" is also american, coined by americans in regards to fair wages for tax paying american citizens, not mexicans, not ukraniains or anyone else. and when i say support, i don't mean lifestyle, i mean pay taxes, vote, and all that other the shit that makes us america.

and to asnwer your last question, "treating the world like shit" is a bit of a stretch but i do believe we should turn a blind eye towards everyone elses problems.  when we're in someone elses business and we get shitted on for it.  when we're not in someone elses business we get shitted on for it.  why even bother?, we're damned if we do, damned if we don't.    our country is fucked up enough as is and we should fix us, before helping someone else.  i say close all the borders and put up the closed sign.  i think we can fend for ourselves just fine and the rest of the planet can do whatever the hell they please, just don't bring it this way, and don't ask for our help then spit in our faces later down road like they always do.

Solid pay means we pay them the labor rate set by the goverment, so it's not a sweat shop.
Steady work means that things aren't exactly thriving in Tijuana, so they're psyched to have a job day in day out.

I'm not "calling you out" because I don't know what your practices are... Just posing a question, and hope you look into that shit because your company rides on the back of real people. And I could care less about Theo... When he has good points cool, when he acts like a 13 yr old elitest and makes stupid posts I'll call him out. Subtract Theo from this discussion; are my questions valid?

And I don't need a definition of steady work. I know people living in poverty are stoked to have a day-in/day-out job but that doesn't justify not paying them a living wage. Giving people steady table scraps doesn't make a company just.

I'm not sure what a living wage is in Tijajuana but someone could figure it out. Benefits are cool, props for that. But based on what you pay your workers can they afford housing, food, and education for their kids?

I understand the importance of proximity for business reasons but I'm kinda bummed the factory's located in TJ. Maquiladoras in border towns cause migration from within Mexico, from rural to urban border areas which displaces families and puts the "have nots" right at our borders, ready to cross when things begin to look better over here.

I'm a realist and don't expect for you to move your plant inland to support rural people but looking into what a living wage is would be a good start. And that does not mean the same thing as Mexican minimum wage. The Mexican gov't is corrupt so the labor rate they set is shit. They want to attract American investors and don't have a good track record of treating their people with dignity. You can do better than that.

i feel what you're saying, its hard to disagree with some of what you posted but jamie isn't running for political office and hes not running a charity, hes running a business.  you make it sound like he has to be this do-gooder in order to meet your unreasonably high expectations of what a company should be, is that even fair?
you also make it sound like having a job is not a right, when in fact having a job is a privilage.  no one is forcing anyone at gunpoint to work for $5 and hour, its by their choice.  if someone doesn't want to work for $5 an hour, they should go to school, study hard, graduate college and make something of themselves.  don't put that lack of effort/resources on someone elses shoulders and cry for equality and fairness, life is supposed to be hard.
heres one of my favorite quotes as of recent.  its from the rocky movie that came out a little while ago and i just love it...

"Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that!"

First off the only Rocky you should be quoting is Rocky 4. Ivan Drago kicked ass.

Secondly, treating people right isn't about charity or political office. You treat people right because if you don't you're an asshole. That goes for whatever your lot in life is.

That said it's easy for me to take the moral high ground because it's not my bread and butter. So in a sense you're right, it's not fair to hold him to some unrealistic standard. But fair or not I hope as a business owner he would hope his employees aren't being taken advantage of.

And the "work is a privelidge not a right" is stupid. It's neither. If you've got mouths to feed it's a necessity. And just because people take shit jobs for shit pay without a gun to their head doesn't let the shit owner off the hook. Desparate people do desparate things to make ends.

My guess is Jaimie is pretty removed from the factory workers and what the make, in proportion to thier cost of living. I'm sure he's got a lot on his plate and rests well with providing steady work for his Mexican employees paying Mexican minimums plus bennies. But it'd be cool if he took it to the next level produced a fair trade product.

Look at the shit "row from the rocks" wrote. ME and HIM were discussing his assumption that because the riders go hard on the boards, that they must be stronger, implying that the product has anything to do with their endorsment. Yes, I did point out the obvious, but it was relevant to the conversation at hand. Then you bust in talking all sorts of shit as if I am an idiot for clearly stating something. And I don't see how saying Jamie Thomas is an icon or legend requires anybody to step up to bat for him. But if you want to, go ahead. Do you get it yet? How about this, since you clearly need shit spelled out for you. I WAS IN NO WAY ATTACKING JAMIE THOMAS. Get it? Its kind of rediculous to step in front of a bullet that hasn't been fired. And just so you know, check the IP on the past few posts. I was at work. Maybe you are a better worker than me, but I doubt you skate more.

i think we can all agree that skateboarding in general is just plain expensive right?  well the price of skateboards has been the same since i started(back in 86-87), while the price of everything anything else on the planet has gone up.
perhaps companies have no choice but to take their production to other countries, otherwise they'll end up having to jack up the price of boards to something more ridiculous than $50.  would you pay $100 if it were made in the USA?  would you pay $75?
i think companies are worried about keeping the price of decks down more than anything else.  of course i'd like a better board, we all do, but i know for sure i wouldn't pay out $75 let alone a $100 for a board no matter how good it was...not because i'm poor, just based on principle.

just another factor to think about.

I get it... In your mind this is some exclusive club... Sorry bud, this a MESSAGE BOARD, open to the public. In essence you were discussing your views with everyone who looks at these boards.

"I WAS IN NO WAY ATTACKING JAMIE THOMAS." Maybe you're on his nuts for spelling this out in all caps; I could care less if you were attacking him or not. I just read something that didn't make sense.

Dude I'm sorry if I raised your blood pressure. I just saw what looked like a dumb post and called it out. My bad if I misconstrued what you were trying to say. I'm more interested in the global issues at hand in regards to skateboarding and overseas production. I just worry about how much money is going into my pocket. I don't give two shits how much is going into anyone elses.

Maybe some of you guys should just go cut down and veneer some of your own trees. Make your own boards.

You guys got your own beef going on, but to address your points Jessico...

Our factory is just outside of TJ and it's where it is because it's got a good place of industry to house the factory and it's accessible for us to manage. We bus people in to work from TJ and a few smaller rural places so they don't have to move their families. The salaries are set by the goverment and I believe they've taken into consideration what someone needs to eat on. I didn't interview every employee, so I'm sure they all have different needs, but our managers do their best to accomodate.

Is our wood factory the reason people say we have unsavory/sketchy business practices, probably not. Anyone else have any issues?

Good point... The unsavory/sketchy business practices bullshit I read on here, in my mind, all comes down image/marketing/style. And maybe some personal beef mixed in there.Combine all that with the fact that you put yourself out here for people to beat up on. No one goes after the other distros like they do Blackbox and pisses me off how people let the other companies slide who press boards overseas and market to malls. And truth be told, even if you ran the most ethical fair trade cooperative in all of Mexico, people who don't like the Blackbox image still wouldn't buy.

That said, I just hope you're intentional about your business practices in Mexico. Which means more than relying on the Mexican government to set fair minimum wages. The Mexican elite make bank off foreign investment and intentionally set minimums low to attract the production sector. The latest figures I could find were for 2006, and at that time Mexican minimum wage was $4.20 per day. That's shitty even when taking into consideration the cost of living in Mexico. The factor in a few kids to feed and education.

Another aspect of Maquiladora production is the exploitation of women and the use of Mexican cultural norms to set wages. Mexico traditionally pays women far less than men and its common practice for Maquiladoras to hire women and pay them less to cut production costs. That's something to check out with your managers and make sure women are getting equal pay for equal work.

I don't expect you to go down and interview every employee or set up a fair trade coop in rural Mexico. But looking at fair trade standards to see how Blackbox compares would be a stand up thing to do.

I'm gonna throw this out there again:

Are you asking Jamie to single handedly bring US standards of living to Mexico? Are you willing to pay more for your board or take your standard of living down a notch? Or are you just pointing out that Mexico is poorer than the US and since it's close it's easy for US companies to take advantage of the cheap labor?

Word... Girl distro deserves all the same hate Blackbox gets.

And Row from the Rocks you make some good points... Globalization shit's complicated any way you slice it. And I'm not saying pay Mexican workers California minimum wage. I'm saying translate the California minimum wage into a Mexican equivilant by factoring the differences in cost of living. I'd bet the bank that comes out to more the 4 or 5 bucks a day. And pay female employees the same as male. Period.

And would I pay $80 a board for that, no. But I would pay a few more bucks per board.

Look, we've got the problems we do with immigration/economics because we've got the haves living next door to the have nots. There are the Mexican elite but they are the huge minority, and the Mexican working class is really pretty poor. I just wish the US gov't would be long sighted and proactive. Instead of throwing BILLIONS of dollars into a dumbshit border fence and more inforcement, how about investing in Mexican infastruction and small business with low or no interest loans? Why not up the environmental/labor standards so Mexican laborers would want to actually stay in Mexico. Why not put real pressure on the Mexican gov't to really clean up it's corrupt act? And these aren't my untested lofty from behind the computer aspirations. This is what the EU does every time it takes in a new country to prevent the shit we're dealing with here. The Eastern Block countries were facing similar social situations Mexico has but the EU equals the playing feild before membership is granted. Now that's some smart shit and it pisses me off the US instead exploits it's neighbor and builds a fence to try and contain them.

I've thought along these lines for years and it was reinforced when I lived in SD. This a part of having a completely capitalist government. The dollar means more than anything, even what's best for humanity. With that said, Jamie (and any other entrepreneur) are dealing with the system we have now. I would rather support Mexican made boards than China made boards. It's choosing the lesser of 2 evils.

True enough... I'd buy Mexican too over China, but I hope things move more towards equity across the border. Immigration'll stay a mess if it doesn't.

And true, industry heads do have to opperate in the system we live in. And Jaimie doesn't have shit to prove to this message board--most kids who post here are stupid anyway. That said he's got the opportunity to raise the bar in the industry.

No, you missed the point entirely. Both governments lack certain ethics (as well as the USA) but if I had to choose where to buy decks from, it would be Mexico. Mexican and Chinese people are great. I truly respect and admire their cultures. I'm not rascist and I resent you insuating I am. And, while the USA is not exactly the most ethical government in the world, I stand a better chance of not getting shot at a protest here than in China (although, in LA, it's entirely possible). EVERY business worldwide should use their influence to raise the standard everywhere they conduct business. Reality is, C.R.E.A.M. and every business understands that and won't change their practices because of it.

Chinese wood sits on a boat for a long time, twice.
Chinese glue sucks.
Chinese environmental/labor practices are worse.
Takes more fossile fuels to ship wood back and forth across the Pacific than drive them up from TJ.
Mexico is our neighbor--helping develop their economy makes sense.

but nobody even wants to talk about Girl/Choco pressing decks in China.

Its one thing to press in China and over-see manufacturing & testing on-site with real skaters that know deck construction - it's another thing entirely to use Chinese Industrialist Tycoons that could give two shits about Skateboarding or a deck's performance and shovel decks into containers faster then tainted toothpaste.
