honestly dont see how this is a big problem lol... Maybe some rando will get hype seeing romero & go buy a mag or sweater... Only puts more money back into skating... I always hate seeing the kid in a fox moto racing hat, monster in hand wearing a big DC shirt with a pair of destroyed vans Chukkas dressing & acting like they skate, but they are putting money back into an industry we all support aswell......

it’s true of any leisure industry- the people that sink the most money into goods are the people who are usually the least involved. bike shops sell 5 thousand dollar carbon fiber joints to people who think that’s what you need to be a cyclist the same way a shop will sell a complete, kicks and a full set of pads to me

right????? shops need to make money off walk-ins and new comers as well... They normally sell the soft goods and whatever else for the non skaters to be able to buy into the skateboarding "vibe or lifestyle".... it's like people getting mad at element & flip for making & selling those shitty shop completes when they're literally just a stepping stones for people that dont have access to/cant afford a PRO set up... Can't get upset at some fools for supporting an industry I love lol...

this. related to the deck brand wheels thread, it's another marketing tactic to appeal to beginners or make $ off price point goods. these billboards are no different and will have norms googling their closest Thrasher retailer. Hopefully not a Z*miez

Red Bull and Monster atleast give the athletes something back and fund competitions. compared to GQ and Apple

As big of a corp giant Nike is, they build parks and donate to skate causes, as well as give away a lot of sneakers to their riders. They just need to cut out this exclusive Dunk shit. Used to be able to buy Dunks for a premium that wasn't hundreds of dollars.

Also fuck energy drank.

OP here... I can totally appreciate the radness of the photos on these billboards and I believe some posters have some very valid points about stuff like this brings $$$ to the industry we love to keep it viable for shops and athletes.

I guess the issue I have is more like when you've been following your favorite band since they were playing parties and bars and then they blow up. Now your favorite band is everyone's favorite band. Now they're playing arenas and college radio has their newest single in heavy rotation. Something that was so personal and special to you feels sold-out.

I don't take these things too much to heart and I don't think it makes much difference though and everyone has their own take on it. Anyways... rad photos on those billboards and the Scott Oster one is f**kin awesome.

I'm honestly curious if the photographers get paid for their work on a billboard?  And even further if the skaters do.   I hope everyone presented on those billboards is getting some Monster cash and not just a box of tees and sweatshirts.

I hope to see Thrasher doing its thing forever.

Reminds me of a song I liked when I was in highschool...

"The bands are good til' they make enough cash to eat food, and get a pad. Then they've "sold out" and their music's "cliche" - cause' talent's exclusive to bands without pay."

Are there any skate shops out that way? I’m pretty sure the nearest ones now are either Active in Redlands or Rhythm in Palm Springs, not going to include the zumiez in cabazon.

I miss the Agency board shop in Yucaipa.
i like the tiny headed bear who says nice stuff to everyone.

oh woah, i grew up in the Coachella Valley but am just now seeing this. that’s pretty cool and much better than the endless dispensary billboards that have taken over in recent years. hope they’re still up when i go to visit in a few weeks!

Rhythm in P.S. is pretty much the only “shop” out there now. crazy to think there were 3 basically covering the whole valley at one point and now zero. my friend has a record store called Dale’s Records in Palm Desert that also sells boards tho, if ur ever out that way check it out!

Not core. It should be a Big Brother ad with someone kickflipping over a bong, naked. That’s what skateboarding is all about.

theyre a content hub now and want to blow up viewership, they dont care if its only skaters. its part of an inevitable change where thrasher sells out and people begin to complain they like the old thrasher better. theyre becoming vice of the skateboard world and thats fine. that being said these billboards are beautiful.

Probably not. The photos are owned by Thrasher and can do whatever they want with them and dont have to keep paying people if thats what the contracts say.
