I always argue that DC shoes in the late 90's are responsible for jockifying skateboarding. They brought in the swishy pants and jerseys and big ass ugly shoes.

It makes sense that newer generations don't feel the culture gap. They skateboarded to football practice.

Have you forgotten about S.A.G.?? .. It was in the culture at large at the time, it was bound to seep into skateboarding.

The part about having to watch out for a certain truck resonated. I remember having bottles thrown at me and getting run into the ditch just for riding a bike on rural blacktop. (On the right 3', not dead center like an entitled wanker)

This years Olympics are in Paris, unlike Tokyo there are drugs everywhere and personal use is probably not a top priority for the Gendarmerie.

(Maybe @OldieButFrenchie can shed some light on this)

A bunch of skaters should get tested positive for weed, blow, speed, MDMA etc. and we will have our bad ass image back.

Feel like the jocks vs skaters (or even nerds or whatever) is way more of an American thing. Maybe because American sports are so structured thru school and shit. Maybe it's the no school uniforms so you grow up thinking your clothes are somehow who you are as a person.

Definitely not, i've been harassed and threatened as a kid just by walking with a skateboard.

technically weed can still land you in jail for the night or longer in France....but yeah cops are more concerned about the crack epidemic around Stalingrad (which is pretty close to République btw  :-X ). Not sure I answered your question, but hey I tried haha

In my experience there's always been more to it than just "jocks". Ive had bad experiences with like rugby dickheads but that's more either they are bogans or private school "macas" and maybe haven't even played rugby themselves since primary school. And then a ton of skaters I've known have actually played sports themselves and would technically be more jocks than those dickheads

more than a night in jail for having weed ? not sur about that. All the people I know that got caught with weed either had a fine or had to go to some kind meeting (quite expensive) about how drugs are dangerous.  Never heard of anyone going to jail for weed (consumer not dealer). I know some people who got arrested and interrogated with some heroin or coke on them so they could get the dealer.

Also all those people were white, for sur could get shittier for poc

that's why I said technically. The laws about drugs have not changed since the 70's. Thankfully they are pretty much never applied by the book anymore. Since 2020 cannabis use should simply lead to a fine....Meanwhile Germany is legalizing fully.    :P

Remember when someone in the first round of snowboarding Olympic medalists tested positive for weed way back in the 90s? That was funny

Anyway I kinda wish it was easier to watch skate comps on tv. I would be hyped if I could go to the bar and yell at skaters on TV with my friends every Sunday  way football fans do. But SLS sucks and nobody watches it

And it turned out the IOC had never actually made a rule prohibiting cannabis so they weren’t able to strip him of his medals.

Thanks for your replies @OldieButFrenchie and @dallou

I am still more afraid of the Polizei than the Gendarmerie.

Every time I am driving in Germany I see so many police cars (either traffic police, Zollamt/customs, or very fast plain police cars parked next to the Autobahn on the lookout for "suspicious" people.

I got stopped and searched three times in Germany, luckily I had nothing on me those times.

But now that I am never in possesion of anything anymore I still sweat when I see Polizei. Also they quite often have border patrols, especially on the Austrian and Swiss borders.

On the other hand on the French Autoroutes I hardly
ever see any police cars and never had any border control. I have only seen police at traffic accidents,  but never police cars waiting or driving around waiting to hassle random people.

I don't think they would enforce these old weed laws with all that cocaine and synthetic drugs flooding Europe right now.  They probably have bigger fish to fry than somebody  smoking a blunt.

BAC and CRS are riot police? I have indeed seen clips of them behaving like pigs, during the yellow vests protest and all that. But not really a concern for tourists, unless you are unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

CRS is riot police and BAC is like ervery day special force thingy, kind of like in the tv show "The Shield". They are dressed "casual" with normal car and act like cowboy and can do what ever they want. They are by far the worst.
