Spitfire 80HD. Punctured wheel
« on: March 01, 2017, 09:32:14 AM »
Today I was going around with my cruiser and something really strange happened. I'm using a Spitfire Koston 80HD and suddenly I felt like there was a flatspot, I stopped and just saw the rubber coming from inside the wheel, like if it was a puncture.

I made some research and I didn't found nothing, I'm wondering if dlx will help me out with a replacement. I never used this wheels less than 20 times and I setup them like 7-8 months ago. The problem is that it was a present and I don't have any receipt but this definitely looks like a manufacturing mistake.

I attach some pictures

Thanks pals

Wow. That's pretty wild.   :o

Now I wanna saw mine in half, to see what's inside. I've only skated mine like 5 times maybe and didn't like them much, so stuck them in my spares box and put the Keyframes back on, so can't really comment much on the wheels or how they hold up.

that looks crazy! i had a set that the core popped out and tore through the urethane on the sidewalls. the good thing is deluxe has the best customer service. find the customer service email for spitfire and send a photo that clearly shows its a spitfire wheel (the cores have the spirfire swirl pattern if all of your graphics rubbed off) and let them know what happened. from there all i had to do was mail back the defected wheels and they sent me a new set and a free set of F4s.

I have a brand new pair of these and the cores so shitty. They impede the wheels from spinning, almost like your bearings are seizing up.  Different bearings, same issue. Even tried different trucks to make sure it wasn't a rough axle, no, its these shit cores. Makes a loud grinding sound when you spin a wheel too.

Another reason that I'm Deluxe for life. I left the IndependentTrucks4LIFE cult and got some thunder 149ii's because I know how much they stand by their stuff. Besides the fact that I love DLX wood and F4s anyway so the progression was natural

I had a pair of AVE Formula Four start to lightly chip. Just on a whim I sent Spitfire some pics and asked if it was normal, as I hadn't seen a wheel flake. Within an hour I had a response and they told me to send the wheels back asap and I got s new set within days. Very happy with Spitfire.

I have had a few sets of the 80hd and i feel there really durable. this is from a set that is almost 3 years old - used on really rough roads in a underdeveloped Chinese neighborhood (not the marble shit we see in skate videos)

DLX just told me it was a defect, but i will never thought it will be a softer plastic inside. I like these wheels but I they can slide a little bit more. Maybe 86 will be perfect

Care to saw one in half so we can see what's inside? I never thought it'd have some softer stuff inside either. Sounds really weird to me.

I will try to cut it but I don't think I will be able to cut that core without a saw

id be down to saw it for the sake of sharing and research.. but i dont have said tool. theres a shop here that cuts a lot of different shoes to display there cushioning inside.. so whatever they use to cut through that im sure can cut through the core. overall im on my 4th set and am pretty stoked on em.  any one tried the conical shaped ones?

I have a saw and also mine are conical, but as they're hardly used, I'm not gonna saw them yet. Can't say how the conicals differ from the classic shape on the 80HDs as I've never had the classic shape and as I said before, I preferred Keyframes to the Spitfires based on a short test. Both conical. I did have different bearings in them though, so the results aren't conclusive yet.  :)

My guess is that the friction within your bearings heated the outer race and melted the plastic core

For those wondering what's inside there you go ( I was totally wrong saying that there was some softer plastic inside, but you will see the air camera)

I think that Steve has the point here, looks like there was a hole between the core and the softer wheel and the hot air of the friction melted the wheel and the plastic core all together.

What the hell?  :o

That looks super weird. Also wouldn't you think the cages in your bearings would have melted and seized the bearings up if the bearings had been generating enough heat to melt your wheels that much? From the pics it still looks like there's some softer stuff between the core and the rest of the wheel and that has been ejaculated. Now I want to cut mine up even more than before.  ;D

I think that it's the same formula for the whole wheel when I cut it I had to make the same effort on the whole diameter of the wheel. About the bearings I was using brand new ones when this happened, so I think that was not something that happened in one day. The old ones I was using had the shield removed.

^in my opinion the weird substance excrement that can be seen in the wheel pics is the glue that was used to permanently fix the outer wheel to the core. My scenario is that the glue had not properly dried (due to lack of catalyst, presence of moisture, too much glue, bad quality) before the wheels were set up and as the core span inside the wheel, this glue pus got scratched and gathered to wherever it could accumulate and exited the wheel through the first little air bubble (that was created during wheel pouring) that it found. Other scenario could be that the wheel had indeed dried but did not stick very well and because of this the wheel started spinning around the core and the same story follows as above. I do not have a clue what glue is used for this purpose but some glues are mushy even when completely dry so this could be the case with the weird excrement.

edit: The pocket that is visible in the last picture was probably a manufacturing defect and maybe due to excess glue or was even a piece of the outer wheel that actually stuck to the core properly while the rest did not, ripped because it could not hold all the force by itself and the chunk missing got chewed and blended with the glue.

I am curious to find the real cause for this, seems very interesting

I didn't thought about the glue, for sure could be. Thanks for comment, such an interesting view

Core separation. Some cores have locks (holes), so the outer urethane physically bonds with the core to prevent this type of thing from happening.
