Aurelien Giraud, Jake Llardi, Marcus Montoya etc.
Are sponsors paying the way for these guys to get in? Somebody explain this to me

The definition of pro is constantly changing. If your name is on a foundation deck and you get 10 bucks a month in royalties, is that 'more pro' than someone who has no board but gets real checks from shoe companies?

Board brands of relevance.

^^ I had thought of this, but surely there are skaters in Tampa Am that are getting paid? Why do they not qualify for the pro contest?
One of the things I loved about Tampa Pro was the originality of runs compared to Tampa Am: each pro comes and shows their style and trick selection, with it being more of a showcase of skill/style rather than a 540 flip front board fest?
Nothing against these ams as they rip, its just ruining a big part of Tampa Pro for me

Flow rider, but this kid already had xgames medals and a tv show.

I thought tony hawk underground taught us back in 2003 that the only difference between a pro and an am is which list you put your name on.

There is no such thing as a pro skater anymore really, not in the old sense of the word. AM contents are dead too, everyone now operates on the same playing field. Get that Nike money, and make sure your Nike swishy pants match your country of origin.

Would like it much more if it was just established ''pros'' showcasing their talent like a big demo disguised as a contest. Couldn't care less about watching some boring skatepark kids 360 flip into every grind/slide.

Being pro in skateboarding is so vague in the first place.

Anybody can start a board company and give an am “pro” status.

they are in the contest for a reason. They undeniably skate at a pro level. I do know that Nike paid for Marcos to get to Tampa Pro. Guarantee they will be pro by year's end

I tuned in on Saturday and saw a dude in capris try a back flip over and over for his whole run. Who paid him to be there?

One year when Ninejah still had I&I, that dude Richard Jefferson entered Tampa as a pro for I&I.  They gave him a hard time for not being up to pro standards and placed him last.  After Larry Perkins.

The only reason several of those boners were there is because someone paid for them.

Clearly you didn't watch.  I'll say 40 of those entrants did not skate at a pro level and at least 15 of them can't.  CAN'T!  More than a handful can't even skate at a spam level.

Anyway, you sound dumb.  Shut up time.

Edit:  Missed that guarantee.  What is it you're guaranteeing?  Please have an answer for your sweeping generalization.  That dude sometimes mentioned isn't going anywhere, and he's not the only one.

I don’t understand why plan b doesn’t turn all those kids pro. They seem to fit their image perfectly.

It’s also crazy to me kids are getting that good at skating without filming a part. It’s seems like it would be so fun and relatively easy to film street clips when you could land shit so easily..

Street skating I think is a dieing thing, if you think about the bigger picture it almost seems pointless now and is a tradition that feels forced upon for these new guys. All it does is risk career ending injurys, it's not like you're filming for 'Inbloom' or something anymore when you have instagram. park practice and contest money is where it's at now bruh!!

Board brands lose their relevance pretty quick. Soon shoebrands or stupid sugar-water brands will turn skaters pro and the board will only be a billboard where they can put their cool stickers.

I don't know, you can definitely gain traction and influence quickly now with just instagram park clips. Most kids mainly skate parks so it's relatable. But I still think that having proper video parts is the key for any type of long term success and building your brand.

Contest money seems to have been dropping too for some time now. You have to be finishing on the podium pretty consistently in the big contests to make good money. Tampa pro had 10k for 1st place this year. And at the rate of new contest kids coming up, your window for those top finishes is getting smaller.

Agreed. They should also start formatting these contests that these guys have to switch the run up each time. I don’t need to see you do three 1 minute runs that’s exactly the same as the last one.
