Madness rips off Francisco Goya
« on: September 14, 2018, 09:28:22 PM »
I know they are public domain but Madness Skateboards first line of graphics is all Francisco Goya images with a logo under it. I love these paintings but I'm not very hyped on the way they cut his name out and eliminated some text from his images. How about giving credit where credit is due and acknowledging that those are the works of a master that have been photoshopped. Posters are commenting how sick the graphics are and Dwindle is staying silent instead of giving credit to the originator or these images.

Hey it's skateboarding, we've been ripping off graphics for decades for fun. Remember the 90's that everyones so into right now. Ripping off stuff is what we do as well as usually being punks about stuff and not  so damn PC about things ( which seems to be going out the window oddly during the time of 90's appreciation).
Don't think credit was given for that Claudia schiffer (spelling?) board or countless others. Just set up a new board and roll with it

This. Love the painting and Goya but the deck looks dumb as shit.

I don’t consider using old art like this a ripoff. If you’re using unaltered art by current artists who are trying to make a living, that’s a dick move and a ripoff. Parodies of corporate shit/popular culture are ok in my book though.

So go complain to them cause no one gives a shit about madness skateboards here or the use of public domain artwork. You may as well be complaining about clipart.

I think I agree with this. Ripping off a classic is one thing. Ripping off some up and comers shit and taking away potential recognition from them is another.

That being said. I have a feeling this company is gonna be whack. . . because when is the last time dwindle did something that wasn't? Give me darkstar wheels back or give me death.

I disagree a little bit. Skater have been taking logos and images and altering them into something else. Here dwindle is placing an unaltered image from a master and adding their logo under it. Why not give the deck the name of painting. I get it doesn't take money out of a current artist pocket but ripping something off is ripping something off. Make it into something different by changing it or sight your source. Anyway dwindle sucks

The art direction is pretty weak. If the entire brand is art history textbook I don’t see it catching on. I wonder how they’ll follow up.

The rest of the boards are up on SoCal skateshop. What’s interesting is that dwindle threw the whole gimmick book at this brands first release. Inlays, embossed, foil, slicks, shapes, pearlescent inks.

I do agree that they could have called their whole line of decks the Goya series or something like that. Looking at their instagram their whole visual profile seems to be based on his stuff, might as well have named the company Goya Skateboards.

Lazy, but I still don’t really see it as a ripoff. You could argue that the act of taking these classic paintings and putting them in a new context is art too (cheap and uninspired art, but still).

I'm no art historian so I could be wrong, but I think some local brand had this exact same graphic in popsicle shape at Kingswell a few months back.

You say that now, but just wait. They are going to take this thing one step beyond.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

A slick 8.6 with wheel wells? I don't care about this company, or their poor art direction. If I see one at a shop in town I'm buying it.
