Does cleaning bearings actually help
« on: May 01, 2019, 06:09:23 PM »
Pretty self explanatory. I bought the Bones kit with speed cream to clean my Swiss. Is this a waste of time and energy? Should I have just put that $15 towards a new set of Swiss?

I mean that was my go to when I was skating almost daily. I would buy new Swiss every few months when they felt slow. Just put these ones in a month or so ago. Wanted to take care of them from the start and do some maintenance.

If you are buying/own Swiss it's worth it to give them a few cleanings before/if you decide to buy new bearings.

If they perform well after cleaning keep'em.

I used to clean cheap bearings monthly, because they dry out quickly and also dust comes inside easily. It helps to get some freshness, but it will not make the bearings to come back as new.
However one issue with the process of cleaning the bearings is that you're taking the risk of damaging the shields when you pop them out. Also removing the bearings from the wheels can damage them, especially if they are stuck inside and you have to apply a strong force on them. I would say that you should clean the bearings when you really feel that it will improve their condition after the process. I currently have a set of Swiss6 that I'm riding since 3 months, they still feel like new, so I'm definitely not going to do anything to them until I feel a significant loss of performance.

Bearings still have those little metal rings in them? I haven’t ripped those out in awhile...

Well played, I would like to know why he is riding mini-logos can't he call in some favors for swiss?

If you are buying/own Swiss it's worth it to give them a few cleanings before/if you decide to buy new bearings.

If they perform well after cleaning keep'em.

Valid point

I feel weird riding Swiss because I don’t like spending money on bearings..

I don't like buying swiss over and over, thats why I picked up the cleaning kit to give it a shot to extend their life.

I have never in my life cleaned my bearings

First time for me too, well cleaning at this level, I would typically wipe them down  with a paper towel if they were extra gunky when switching them into new wheels.

Yeah, it's weird, Neil was all spruking swiss for a while there, I know he's on some kind of Bones deal, so who knows.

Yes clean your bearings. Cleaning bearings can make them last years. Spending $60+ on bearings 2 or 3 times a year isn’t worth it (at least you’re supporting skating I guess.)
Even if you’re buying bones reds, you can make them last years. Like anything machined, they need maintenance. It’s not complicated and you don’t have to go crazy with gas or acetone cleaning. You can get by with 90% isopropyl alcohol, then lube. You don’t throw away your engine after 5k miles, you get an oil change.

Bones has good instructions and write up on the process...

I may be totally off, but I think he means he uses the shields from old mini-logos in his swiss?

Yeah clean your bearings helps. If they’re on the cheaper side than I’d look to see if any have deformed.

I completely disassemble the bearings and soak in nail polish remover. The vinyl race goes into soapy water.
Brush out the crap. Let them dry.

Take the shields put them on the bearings and put all 7 of the ball into the race against the shield and snap the ctr back into it roll the bearings around with a pin and put the vinyl back in.

Add sewing machine oil or grease or whatever you run.

Of course it helps, I clean mine every 6 months +-
1.- Take out shields
2.- fill the bottle with acetone
3.- shake and all of that
4.- 2 drops of speed cream per bearing.
5.-  :D
Sir, I'm going to politely, but firmly, ask you and your common sense to leave this establishment.

I think it does help. Dirt, debris, and dried out lube can cause friction that damages to the balls and races. Therefore, cleaning them and lubricating them will extend the life of your bearings and make them feel almost brand new.

if you’re not frightened of harsh chemicals there’s cans of ceramic bearings cleaner/lube at the hardware store.

It blasts the scum out of all bearings np. If you’re riding a soft wheel with a plastic core it may rip off the hub

I know it makes no sense at all. Everyone hates it and thinks it's a fad, but after skating for close to thirty years, I 100% believe the way to have the fastest bearings with the most longevity is to pop the shields and ride em dry. Haven't popped a bearing since I started taking the shields off ten years ago. They never seize, and they're super fast.

I drop some lube in my Bronson Raws every once in a while. They’re the best bearings I’ve ridden and they’re shieldless out of the package so cleaning is super easy if it’s your thing.
