I think Mr Wendler lacks a bit of humility and is distateful, but if this is a true quote it shines a light into the manipulative personality of Jamie Thomas. That's some next level empathetic reasoning that he couldve taken in a positive direction, but instead he spent some time empathizing in his mind with wendlers situation, to use these revelations as power over the individual. Exploiting weakness. Very dark stuff.

When I was like 14 our town was having a fundraiser to build a skatepark.   Me and my brother were huge Zero/Thomas fans at the time (peak Zero - just after Misled Youth) so I cold called him for some gear to raffle off.  He didn't answer and I left a voicemail.   A few days later he calls back and is super cool on the phone saying he's going to send a bunch of stuff direct to my house, and sign it, etc etc.  I was totally fanning out on the phone probably sounding like a huge nerd.  But it turns out it was just my neighbor - my Dad told him to call and pretend to be Jamie as an April Fools joke.  My dad's an asshole.

But Jamie did actually end up sending some stuff.  But he never called.

Also - totally agree with the take on the quote above and about that dark use of empathy.  Pretty lame to say the least.
