Venture Hi 5.6 (anyone else find that the hanger wears down surprisingly quickly? Got these maybe three-four weeks ago, slappied these for maybe a total of 6-7 sessions and I'm almost at axle already.)

[close]

I hit axle on my most recent set of Venture 5.8 vlights in about two months, the titanium set I had before that it took me about 5-6. I used to never hit axle when I skated Indys, Aces, Thunders and would just swap my trucks out when they fucked out in other ways. I'm definitely skating way more and also holding grinds longer on chunkier ledges lately, but it does seem possible that ventures grind down quicker than indys.

That’s wild to me, didn’t used to be like that. My covid creeping has been just parking lots, nary a grindable surface in sight. It’s just been all, sloooooow, whittling.
Wonder what they changed? I’ll be honest, I’ve got more stuff than I can skate thru, do to trying too many different things, and still not settling. The ide if getting to axle is awesome. I’m not a young skate rat tho, so I can see how some will be bummed.

Yeah I don't mind it at all because I'm fortunate enough to switch stuff out whenever I want. Its also nice in that you can get all your lock in grooves quicker. Even though I've hit axle on these so quickly I think I can definitely get at least another few months out of it.

Its definitely still in the same tier of durability as Thunders and just a bit worse than indy probably. Wayyy better than those tensor atg mags I had (great truck), grooves quickly which is good, but could probably hit axle in a few days if you really wanted to.

Covid got me starting a mini-quiver on accident (sorry about the size):

Mob
$-lave P.Burke (his highness) 8.5
Doomsayers 7/8" allen
Thunder 149 Titanium
OJ Insaneathane 51mm (Universal shape)
Bones Swiss

Mob
Strangelove "Birth of Cthulu" 8.875
Shorty's 7/8" allen
Ace 44
OJ Insaneathane 51mm (Universal shape)
Bronson G2

Mob
Doubles Ltd. "Hungry Ghosts" 9.1, 90s shape
Shorty's Silverados 7/8" allen
Ace 55
Sml Wheels 54mm Coffee Cruisers
Bones Swiss (new set is feeling gummier than my friend's broken in G2s, thus the set on the setup above)

Just switched the Ace 44 to the $-lave cuz they were feeling a touch squatty on the 14.25 wb of the Strangelove (I'm kinda tall tho; 6'1")

It’s eggish, I think the photo perspective is off.
The tail feels pretty stubby actually; if you care, I can measure.
This digital image actually looks pretty accurate.

Not really much to see here but seeing all these smaller boards made me want to make a setup with my old stuff from the late 90s to mess around with and since I got a complete for my niece from skateamerica, I grabbed the least expensive deck to fit these 7.5" wide trucks.

Deck: old quartermaster mini logo 7.88" from skate america for $25. Wheelbase is pretty long with this deck for whatever reason at 14.65"

Trucks : Venture vlight lows (1996ish)

Wheels : Darkstar Master Urethane 49mm

Bearings: the Red Amphetamine ones from TGM for $7 or so

Hardware is randoms pieced together and so is grip.

Forgot that these old ventures do not turn very much and its certainly more flexy than my creature coldpress or bbs 8.5"s Im used to but its a fun lil setup for flipitty shit. Wheels and bearings seem fine and quite good for sub $10 bearings.

Overall solid $30 spent for a "new" old complete.

Enjoi Tourettes R7
8.25, 14.25, 32.1
Independent 144 titanium, Bones bushings on top, Delux Super Cush barrels on bottom
Spitfire f4 Conical 54, 99 duro
Mob M-80

I have a love/hate relationship with R7 decks. As a heavier guy, I appreciate the strong lasting pop (also a big fan of steep kicks). That said, the R7's definitely feel different than a standard pressed deck. Standard wood feels great, but will eventually sog out (or break). South Central wood is the most durable I have come across, but it is definitely heavier than most.

Looks dope.
I was looking at these decks, like all of Krooked’s shit really, and I’ve always had better luck with their boards. How’s the shape? Specifically the super dorky ‘fingers of flat’?
I’ve been trying to skate 8.25-8.5s, as they feel nice for actually riding, and are stable with the wider trucks. I then spend the whole session trying to ‘warm up’ by landing some kickflips and 360 flips. Maybe a narrower, yet longer setup would be the magical cure for ol dusty legs. Blah blah

Lots of variety and heat on these last few pages. The strangelove, skate cafe, this setup, and even that tkf (I’ve got a semi irrational hatred for that company) with the venture lo’s all look fucking sick.

Where is the "fingers of flat" measurement taken? Never needed to know this but I'm seeing "fingers" used more and more as a deck measurement.

It’s some shit from the ‘professor’. Measured from the bolts, to where the rise starts on the tail/nose. Some boards immediately begin rise up after the bolts, other have some space of flat there....theories abound on what works better with which trucks, what causes more pop, vs more control. For me, more flat is just easier, doesn’t tire me out as much, and I’m more consistent. Why? Dunno. Could be 1000% bullshit.
Or not.

What was your cutting technique on the middle one? I like the way the grip is in about 2 mm all around.

Regarding height, I am 6.1 also and 14.25 is perfect for me because I have a 31” inseam.

Also, the board on the right reminds me of 90-91 ears. Very cool.

I forgot I even had this board because it's been in a box in my office for over a year and a half. I don't normally do black friday sales (or pretty much buy anything online pre-covid) but Season's in Albany is a really cool shop so I made an exception and did their black friday 2 decks for 55 buck mystery box back in 2018. Both boards were very very silly (the other is club deck) and for some reason they tossed a buttload of palace stickers in the box too. I sort of immediately forgot about them and just kept buying and skating boards (mostly passports and maybe 2 quasi) without ever skating these. Just setting this one up now but I genuinely like how silly this graphic is and some poorly placed palace stickers make me like it even more.

Frog 8.5
Indy Hallow 149
Spitfire Conical Full F4 54mm
Reds
Jessup (Was an old sheet I had laying around. I prefer jessup over all other grip but this sheet didn't really feel too sticky but it gripped fine and feels normal)

This deck is honestly pretty timely with covid
