Wanted to sizedown to a shorter board and wheelbase. Feels way more comfortable as I’m short and stumpy like this board.

Creature Jawn Gardner TT 8.8 x 31.4 (14wb)
Ace 55 classic
OJ 55mm hardline (also sizing down from a 58mm)
Bones Swiss
Mob

Sick setup! If it's not too much trouble, could you post a pic of the top?

Thank you Sir! This shape looks super fun. Keep us updated on how it skates

So I got a quick session in at the park — transition — and boy oh boy was this board different. A good different, but still, different as there were lots of factors to overcome:

Came from my TOPX 8.75 which was full shaped — squared off nose tail — so the tapered TT took time to get used to as I always felt my toes were hanging too far off the edge which made me feel squirrely at times.

Going from that board's 14.75WB to a 14WB, my stance felt too wide, so I had too much weight at the nose which made me feel like I'd tip over.

On the other hand, the short WB made me feel like I zipped around tighter turns and corners.

And seeing that I also went from worn in 97a Spitfire F4 to 99a OJ hardline, the wheels made me feel like I was hitting those corners at even a faster speed.

Add to that the new hard wheels feeling vs. the softer wheel, I'd tended to slide out a touch more my 97a wheels grippier. I can only imagine the slippage I'd feel if I went 101a.

Popped an ollie and it felt like an ollie. Tried a kickflip and it felt like the shorter WB and tapered nose helped my flick go faster — still primo'd and slammed my shin, just faster this time.

Does the shape taper at all? Or are my eyes tricking me lol

It tapers some. But most def not like an egg shaped board would.

Krooked 8.38 x 32.25 and 14.5 wheelbase III (mellow) *new
Independent 149 standards
Spitfire F4 97 duro 56mm classics *new
Bones swiss
Shortys 7/8 silverados
Jessup grip

New wheels, so new deck too, but I machined off the swirl graphic so they are very clean looking now.

Definitely like the 97 duro for the newer slippery concrete parks.

I love 97...my slimeballs are my favourite wheels...once they’re done ill try the spits too.
Also 8.38 size seems to be my new sweet spot, how you liking it with 149’s??

Got back into skating a few weeks ago. Before my current break I rode more bowl than street, and I am in love with those big, shaped boards like my current BH crest board. I stopped 1.5 years ago. 99% of the time I skated alone. So I kind of got used to skate these boards for street too. I kind of forgot how smaller, modern boards skated.

So I am skating again and I rode on someone's 8.5 FA and while the crest and big, shaped boards were so beautiful to look at and fun to skate, I forgot how much better I could have been skating if I downsized.

I am a one setup type of guy so with this Deathwish I can still ride transition comfortably if I want, but also make it easier to skate the streets. (and be able to nollie again and learn noseslides :P ) I also really, really dig the contortionist graphic. It is so rad. Now it's time to set it up and see if I like that baker/deathwish concave and shape.

Before I bought the board, I got me some F4 99a O.G. Classics and damn, they are so good! Better in every way than the Mini Logo's (not that I was expecting it to be not, the F4's cost 2.5x as much  :P )

Old deck: Birdhouse Hawk Crest 9.75"x31.75" 15.75" WB
New deck: Deathwish Taylor Kirby Rigor Mortis 8.5"x32" 14.5" WB

Big drop in wheelbase but I am sure 14.5 will still be comfy on transition, so this will be much better allround.

Rest of the setup:
Indy 159 with Bones medium bushings, no bottom washer
1 inch riser pads (Still got wheelbite, so I should probably buy hards ;D)
Reds
Mini Logo A-Cut 60mm 99a (worn down to about 56) -> Spitfire F4 99a 58mm O.G. Classic

Just do what I did and trap yourself in some cyclical reasoning ie: ‘I need a new setup plus I can try new wheels/I want to try new wheels so why not get a new setup’.
that would be crazy if your skin was made of hammers.

This deck was for the collection, but I broke my last board. on gap 50, that kept turning in a gap lip.

Birdhouse 8.125
Thunder 148s
Darkroom Triclops 52m 99a
Quantum Atoms
Grip over bolts

Should pair nicely with my RBK DGK Club

I know the guy and his story. I am into all the old school stuff (actually all eras in skateboarding) , part of the reason I am so stoked on the graphic (apart from the fact it is awesome) and mentioned it contortionist. ;D

Chris Miller did an original drawing that was interpreted by the Vision art department.  Original miller art was this:

Also 8.38 size seems to be my new sweet spot, how you liking it with 149’s??

I have always found that the DLX 8.38 boards are almost the same as or round 8.5 in width anyway, so 149s with 2 or 3 washers on the inside have worked well for me, as I like the wheels right on the edge lining up with the deck.  There are lots of guys who ride 159s on 8.5 boards, so this is pretty much the same feeling I guess, only not quite as big.  I have tried it and have a board or two still set up with that combination, but for a regular ride this one works best overall.

For those who want the wheels sitting inside, washers on either side still hide the wheels enough but keep the board stable, but before 144s came out, most people who skated 8.25s used 149s anyway as thin wheels would still sit well.  The rail / street tech guys I know use 144s on 8.38 but the narrower truck works well for rail / ledge / flip tricks for them, but feels way too narrow for me when I set up my normal board like that.

Personal preference and trick selection plays a big part in how a board is set up and although I feel like I am losing more tech / flip tricks nowdays, I still don't quite want to give up on the 8.38 all rounder board, otherwise I would be just going with 8.75 to 9.0 and enjoying going faster and doing less.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Actually it the shoe was coming off the base. I took the insoles out to glue it down. That’s the trouble with a 15 year old shoe. Sneakers in general are not built to last that long.

Yeah the 8.38 are like 8.5...but ever since i found 8.25 trucks, thats all i ride on anything up to 8.5. Like you say, its all personal preference...i dont like seeing wheels or the ends of the axle when im on my board. Also, for some reason ive never liked the Indy 149’s...i like the same size thunder and indy 159’s are my favourite truck...but 149’s always seem off, i have no idea if its been the decks or something else in the setup but whenever I’ve had a setup with those trucks I’ve hated it
