sick grip job, weird question but do your custom orthotics fuck with the heel lock in on low tops? i can almost never wear mine with low tops or my heels slip out of the shoes constantly. ive been forced to removed the insole out of anything low making the ball of my foot effectively naked to any hard impacts.
[close]
yes, i totally get heel slippage on my left foot only which of course is the foot i push with . I have dunks which aren't so bad and i skated today with the dunk elites with the normal dunk insole . how long have you had orthotics ?
[close]
I had to take the insoles out of my dunks, but it's painful to the ball of my foot on hard landings. I have dunk elites but I just use the regular elite insole without orthotics because I'm almost positive it's D3O material and it seems to absorb hard impacts better than anything else. I've been on orthotics for the past 2-ish years, I fell biking and dislocated my arch. The only thing they could do to help was make me orthotics, but they have been life changing for my posture and foot pain. One thing I have noticed is I can wear converse with the orthotics and they're more comfortable than most other shoes. I've switched to almost all high tops for skating/biking now as it's a lot safer feeling and I can't stand the slippage.
[close]

Jesus that sounds painful . My arch is just blown out and someone’s my ankle swells up . I hope I can find more dunk elites at the outlet . Yeah as you get older high tops are the bay to go but funny when I rocked cons it was worse for me . Also the tongue always moves and then my ankle swells up from the shoe rubbing .
[close]
If you find any size 10 lows and 10.5 hi let me know, I'm looking for more. I tried cons 70's and loved them, Now I'm on Huf Classic Made in Japans and they're one of my favorite shoes of all time. For more support/less tongue movement the Hupper 2's are pretty nice, just extremely stiff when you first lace them up. They have super deep soles where your foot is basically cradled by rubber. Have you ever found any low tops that don't cause heel slippage?
[close]

Fellow orthotic wearer here. One thing that helped me fit them into more shoes was to put my orthotic on top of the totally flat removable insole from a shoe that doesn't use the insole as the primary form of cushioning. I think the ones I'm using now are from Puma Suedes, but any thin/flat insole from another shoe, or even the flat 'odor eaters' style ones from the drug store will work. That way I get a tiny bit of cushioning under the forefoot, but it's not pushing my heel up out of the shoe. The only stock skate shoe insole I've found that works with my orthotics is the new (Zoom Air) Cons ones, which are very flat and thin.

I've also found high/mid shoes work best with my orthotics, but I've had good luck with Hupper 2 lo's, and Vans Old Skool Pro. I really liked One Star mids with them as well - they're a mid, but just high enough to keep my heel locked in without being too constrictive. Makes sense that that's the one I'd really like, since I'm pretty sure they've discontinued them.
[close]
It's kind of crazy but I hate wearing hi tops with shorts so I've pretty much been wearing long pants which can get a little toasty in the summer. I'll have to try some hupper lo's out, just got the hi's and I can see how they might give some hold with those deep ass midsoles.
[close]

The Hupper 2 low is also a pretty deep fit, in addition to the tall foxing tape. It really wraps the top of your foot well, and there's room to spare for the extra volume the orthotics take up. This is what made the Old Skool Pros work well for me too. And in either of those shoes, if you lace to the top eyelet, you're about as close to your ankle joint as possible; which helps the heel lock. Obviously every foot is different, but those are the only lows that have worked really well for me with my orthotics. As was stated previously, the Outsole on the Hupper does feel pretty thick/stiff out of the box, but I liked the stability/support that that provides once it's slightly broken in.

I've also thought about trying one of the Adidas shoes with the super thick Adiprene insoles that everyone seemed to hate - I would think removing that thick stock insole would leave a lot of room - but haven't gotten around to trying them on yet.
Awesome, will definitely give the hupper lo's a try then. Are your orthotics about a 1/2" thick? I'm curious about asking my doctor if they make one that is any slimmer.

Dad of the year. By getting them a decent first setup they probably have a much higher chance of sticking with it

I can’t wait to get my little one their first setup

About that, yeah. With the thin/flat insoles I put underneath them for cushioning, I find they work out to about the same thickness under the heel as a Vans Ultracush. Not sure how much thinner they'd be able to make them, because they have to cup your heel/arch, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask.

New Cruiser.

- Escapist KC 8.25" Shop Deck (BBS/Generator) w/Mob
- Thunder Team Titanium 148's w/Bones Mediums (stock top & bottom cup washers) & Riptide Pivot Cups
- Sml 53mm 97A Herringtons w/Modus Blues

Edit: I put the wrong bearings, changed them to Modus Blues. Also changed the wheels to SML 53mm 97A Herringtons. The Spitfire 80HD's were just too big and too slow for cruiser wheels. I was surprised at how poorly they handled the streets and couldn't hold a decent speed. I was pushing almost as much as with hard street wheels so I might go with some Keyframes next time.

That Nora complete made me think of the first setup my brother got, which we kind of shared:
Shorty's Muska rising sun (red sun)
Orion trucks (red)
Spitfire wheels with a red swirl

I can remember pretty vividly seeing it for the first time, something like 17-18 years ago. Hopefully that Nora deck is as memorable. When you're young, the color scheme is a big deal!
