Switching between the Ventures and 149 Thunders because I can't make up my mind about them. Seem to feel good one day and turning feels wonky the next.

Stock bushings on both?  Bones Hardcores help both of them a lot.  Ventures you sometimes have to sand the top of the bushing down though, the fitment is a little odd.  I used to exclusively ride Ventures back in the day but I switched to Thunders on my techier setups and Indies on bigger/heshier setups (Aces if I ever buy a cruiser).  I like the longer base plate on Ventures more but Thunders turn sooo much better.  I also like how Thunders grind a lot better (other than nose/tail slides and blunts), especially Crooks, and the fact that there are more options for aftermarket bushings.  Thunders sort of force you to ride harder/smaller wheels for nice feeling nose/tail slides and blunts.

Btw 99a or 101a Conical Fulls?  I'm trying to find some 54mm 99as for my crust buster but they're sold out everywhere... it sucks.  Dig the setup though, definitely something I could see myself riding.  I just personally prefer Indies when I ride wide boards and wheels 54mm+.

I’m weary of aftermarket bushings and stuff but I’ll consider the advice. Thanks!

Yeah crooks felt way off on the ventures. The triangle shape of the hanger felt harsh and it was hard to get a consistent lock. It’s feeling a bit better now with a groove forming.

The spits are 99a. I got them a while back before the spitfire shortage. I grabbed a pair of 55 lock-ins today and the shop worker confirmed a factory shortage but said they’ll be restocked soon!

I have aftermarket thunder bushings in mine and it was an improvement for sure. I hated the stock ones

That deck is 31.5" right? I've been looking at one every time I go to one of my local shops but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. Any issues getting used to it or anything to be aware of if I grab a wknd deck? I know some of their decks are even shorter, like 31.2“ but they still have a +14“ wb which is an intriguing setup.

Also how's the wood? My last PS board was a 2018 foundation and I've heard conflicting reports about the quality of recent PS boards.

I believe I have the 32” 8.5 but they do come in 31.5. This is my third wknd in this shape so I’m already used to it. It’s super flat and wide with a big ass nose. Kinda planky which I find great. The wood does get kinda soggy tho after a couple weeks. No flex but a bit of a duller pop. One thing, I measured the 8.5 and it’s more of a 8.6 near the nose and tapers to an 8.5 near the tail. Might be important to you.

Also, for my bd, my gf bought me an 8.38 wknd and it seems way different. No noticeable taper and way steeper. Will have to get back to you on that one.

The wood on my Quasi is amazing. No flaws and insanely light and crisp. I don’t think it will last as long as a BBS but I like how it skates a lot more.  I have heard a lot of complaints on PS quality control so get it at your local if you can. I got lucky with my order.

Based on what I've read, the stuff I like to skate, and my height, I'm trying to piece together info to create an ideal setup.

It'll be -
  • Purchased from a local skateshop
  • A pro model of a pro I'm a fan of
  • 8 x 31.5 with a 14-inch wheelbase
  • South Central/Pennswood/PS Stix wood
  • Bones Swiss bearings
  • Bones hardware
  • Jessup Ultragrip or plain black Grizzly
  • Ace 33s with stock bushings
  • white Spitfire F4s 51-53mm

I guess the hard part's going to be finding a pro model of a pro I like with those exact specs.

Are you unwilling to go BBS? A DLX 8.06 Full SE would be my go to.  Otherwise Habitat has boards that fit those dimensions.

I’d get this Suciu board personally.

I can't stand Ty Beal. No, to be totally honest I don't know too much about him, but I like Scumco - if I can't find a pro board, I'll definitely buy one from a company I like. I've been hearing a lot of good things about Scumco over the last few years, plus KT and Kyle Nicholson.

I saw a Real Chima board that has a great graphic - it's green with flowers -and fits all the dimensions. I'm thinking about that one as well!

Also thinking about a Habitat, I've never owned one. Trying to find Kevin Lowry's board. I forgot to say that the graphic plays a big deal as well, maybe it's puerile to say so but still.

So far I found a Chocolate windowsill Yonnie that fits the dims, still not sure if their wood is up to par though. Also a 5Boro VHS board that fits and the graphic is lovely, but wood and the pro I have no idea about. Also thinking of a Scumco logo board.

I was considering that board recently myself. I really like that Suciu board as well though. It has a very blunt/squared nose like a Quasi. It’s super mellow too. I almost bought it but I wanted a 32+ inch board with 14.25” WB and went Quasi.  The varnish and graphic are so sexy on the Suciu.  If you look at Habitat’s website they have more accurate pictures.

Both are awesome choices.

Sometimes I look at the pictures of the setups here and see what looks like mad bent axles, yours especially on the back truck. It looks like /----| instead of |----|. Is that just the angle at which the picture was taken? Nice toes by the way.

Yeah I've been switching between the two. My ocd is getting to me on this one.

And yeah it looks super bent in the photo but looks normal? I can't tell at this point haha. Feels alright at least.

Depending on the angle of the picture it looks like the wheels have a ton of camber. All skateboards do this.

100% something I’d put together myself. Love it.  Doesn’t get more hesh than that.  Nice.

How are you liking the Big Balls?  I’m about to try a set myself. My only complaint is the shields... I wish they were black or white.

I really like the Big Balls they are smooth and fast and have held up well so far and being a bigger guy I’m a chronic bearing breaker. The blue shields aren’t the greatest but doesn’t bother me too much

Good to hear.  Obviously it's a preference thing and not a big deal, I just prefer neutral colors.  How long have you been riding this pair?  I'm mainly curious of the longevity compared to Swiss 6.  If they last at least half as long it's a better bearing.

I've probably been riding them for like 4 months so far and they have only gotten better, Haven't broken any yet either. I  can't shed any light on how they compare to Swiss 6 as i've never had the chance to ride them.

Scumco logo boards are 14" wb  but  the wider ones at least are 32". I don't want to shit the thread up with my Pennswood/Scumco worship routine but if that's something you're interested in shoot me a PM and I might be able to help you out.

I like it, I mainly skate transition. I’m also 6”2 with size 13 feet so the extra room is nice.

The classic eagle 8.75” or 9” is perfect when you throw Ace 55’s on it, as the wheelbase is shorter with those trucks. With Indy’s I agree, it’ll slow the turn even more with the wide truck/longer WB combo.

I've been thinking about skating an 8.75  for a min now because of the extra room, I mainly skate hills and flat ground with the occasional ledge, My current set up is a real 8.25 with 144 indys and 48mm spits were 53

8.75+ probably isn’t ideal if you do a lot of flat ground but just go with your gut! It’s fun to experiment with new sizes and shapes. I find 8.75 to be a weird feeling, I prefer a 9” popsicle it’s so roomy and the wide trucks just take curbs and coping to the next level.

So I updated my board and threw some 99a 52mm Spitfire F4 Radial Slims and some Bones Hardcore Hards on it (originally 103a 52mm and Bones Hardcore Mediums).

The wheels are a huge upgrade and hands down the best shape I’ve ever rocked when it comes to thinner techy wheels. I love how they look as well.  The bushings fixed the constant wheelbite issue but are way too stiff for me but I’m sure they’d get better once broken in but I instead decided to go with Hards on the bottom and Medium up top.  It’s much better than before and I believe I’ll stick with that setup.

I’ve decided to go with a 8.25 or 8.375 Quasi next time and some 149 Indy Forged Hollow Stage 11s to move the WB in slightly and raise the height while not going full Indy 55mm.  These trucks are just too low at my size and the long wheelbase of the Indys are a little too aggressive for me I think... not to mention the level of shit that 147 Thunders are at Smiths/Feebles... fuck a that kingpin.  I can skate it well and pop insanely high but the front feels a bit too heavy for me and it forces me to kick down harder than I have the energy for.  If I was in my prime I’d stick with Thunders and step up to 148s with this board and 149s with an 8.25/8.375.

I’m not sure what length 8.25 I’d go with. I love the 32.375 length of this board but I’d like to compare shapes between the 8.25x32.375” and 8.25x8.125”. The 8.375s are 32.25”.  Since I’m going Indy any would work I’m sure but if I stayed Thunder I’d stick to the 32.375”.

If you didn’t see my last post here are the specs;

Board: Quasi Happiness 8.0” x 32.375” x 14.25”
Grip: MOB
Trucks: Thunder Hollow Light II 147s
Bushings: Bones Hardcore w/ Medium Top & Hard Bottom (Colored the yellow part black)
Wheels: 52mm Spitfire F4 Radial Slim 99a
Bearings: Bones Reds (Shieldless)
Hardware: 7/8 Allen Shorty’s Silverados
