A lot of Sunny Day Real Estate
when that bass comes in at around 0:06...fuck.
this album is a true classic...
...and sorry to take this there, but i always feel compelled to say that this album is it's own thing--when it came out, nobody was talking about "emo" anything, and it's always irritating to see people lump this in with a bunch of shoddy, insincere, ham-handed garbage that came out later...
Oh man, that album is a total banger, their later albums are great too. Evidently, there may be something in the works with them:

i love sunny day real estate. used to be a lot into old early-mid 90s emo/posthardcore/screamo. it started with stuff like grade and thursday and then i went backwards in time really fast and ended up being a huge ebullition/level plane/gsl/dim mak head.
when i was 17 i would just copy justin pearsons style wholesale lol. all my schoolmates thought i was gay. i was wearing black levis or dickies and some slim black t and rock the spock cut and tried to look super androgynous. i was very much into what they now call sasscore(blood brothers, vss, antioch arrow, swing kids...).
the whole poppy high school drama emo like brand new or taking back sunday didn't do shit for me. although i admit there are a few tracks in that genre that are just incredibly catchy and just good pop songs if you take them for that. it was weird to see the whole thing become hair metal 2.0 in the following years.
sorry for the rant. it was a good time. a bit corny in retrospect, but i remember how cool it was to meet someone with similar tastes, because that was so rare. internet was yet young, so we'd obsess over every 7inch we got off soulseek. good times that i like to remember. it's the reason why i love hearing that type of music now in skatevideos.
my favorite band rn that does sort of throwback emo might be blair. i love blair. by the c is such a great song.
also shout outs to appleseed cast, if we are talking about stuff that vibes more like sunny day, i feel like this band needs to be mentioned. deep elm had a couple great bands. ethel meserve/later benton falls was super sick and unique, too.
ok i gotta stop. i'll leave this here because it's an awesome track from one of my favorite straight up emo albums:
EDIT: also shoutouts to
@Freelancevagrant for posting 1000 travels of jawaharlal, also a very sick record!
