Is this normal?
« on: May 01, 2020, 09:54:40 PM »
Been skating 3 weeks and already put a hole clean through the sole of my chucks.

Am I going to have to buy new shoes every month?

I got giant feet (size 16) so it's damn near impossible to find skate shoes. Found some vans sk8 hi's in my size. Will the soles last any longer than converse chucks? I've never worn proper skate shoes before so any input will help bros.

Seems a bit fast to wear through the sole. But yeah if your skating 3-5 days a week you can count going through shoes pretty quick. Most shoes last 3-6 weeks. Generally vulcanized will get blown out faster and cupsoles will last a bit longer.

Also converse have one of the shortest lifespans and thinnest soles.

I’d recommend learning proper power slides so you don‘t have to drag your foot and wear your shoes out to slow down

Always get suede skate shoes for maximum durability. Emphasis on skate specific shoes, as Vans and Vans Pros (the ones you should get) are two completely different shoelines.

Since I doubt many skate brands make shoes in size 16, I would seriously consider finding a basketball shoe that could be good for skating. Like Air Jordans perhaps? Something that's all suede and doesn't have excessive straps n shit

my options seem to be:

standard converse all-stars (easy to find and don't mind them, just get holes in three weeks)
vans authentic lows (hate them)
vans sk8 hi (not the pro jawns, never worn them)
etnies fader (never worn them)

that's legit all i can find anywhere

That Etnies Fader is probably the most durable out of that list. It’s pretty puffy and thick but they will hold up. It’s a completely different feel from your Chucks though.

This. Aj1 and dunks should be available in that size? Maybe Superstars, stan smith's?

Jordan 1 mids should last quite a bit longer (at least 2-3x as long as the vulc ones mentioned) and are available at around 100 bucks... Maybe even hit up a Nike outlet?

I looked at a bunch of sites to try and find some good size 16 jawns for you because I’d feel a lot safer knowing that there’s a giant somewhere out there that owes me a favor.

I know it's Zumiez but...  there may be some options in here: https://www.zumiez.com/shoes/shoes/skate.html?d=4294966659%2C4294966345
There's a Chukka Low Pro. Closer to the Van's Sk8 hi feel but with a better insole. And an Etnies Kingpin that stand out.

Also, searching on Amazon or eBay may work since it's a larger size and you may find those niche people selling size 16 skate shoes that shops normally wouldn't carry.

Good luck finding a shoe that works! Makes me appreciate being 11-11.5 and having a great selection most of the time.

DC carries a number of models that are size 15-16. Pure, Court Graffik, Net (I think?)

I mean.....on the plus side you are a giant with huge feet, so I’m not bummed for you. At all.
Converse will last, just be mindful of supergluing seams. The skate cons all last fairly well, 70s decent.
As others have mentioned any leather court shoe, particularly aj1s work real real decent.
And then after that....I mean shit if your shoes last a month it’s because you are a giant skating on an island paradise, skating so much your shoes aren’t lasting.
No tears

do you ever smell the blood of an Englishman?
while cool-guying is a real phenomenon, studies show that 83% of all cool-guying incidents can be attributed to the cool-guyee being an awkward weirdo

No problem! Should have asked where you were, first. That would help shoe option availability/price. If DC has an NZ/Aus region site (haven't checked) maybe that could work for the DC  choices.
I'll echo other suggestions like the Dunk, AJ1, and maybe some of the basketball type shoes. They might be more available in your region, I'm guessing.

Welcom to the joy of canvas, people see that back in the day we skated chucks, what they don’t know is in the 80 and 90 you could find them at outlet stores for like ten bucks, so buying a new pair every week was no big deal, now I see them for like fifty at stores. If you find the ones that are sued then no problem. I have put holes in the canvas ones in five hours doing nothing but ollies.

no offense, do what makes you happy. but maybe you should think about trying something else if you have size 16 feet, that doesn’t sound like fun trying to skate with feet that big.
This has me cracking up, what exactly does Black Flag have to do with measuring your dick starting behind ya nuts?

Skateboarding is nothing but a game to find the right fits to appear like you're a proportional human being instead of a midget or a giant.
